POWER STRUGGLE IN LAMU

  • The proposed 1000 megawatt coal fired power plant in remote Lamu county of northern Kenya would have severely affected the environment, according to scientists and activists. Yet despite the danger emissions would have posed to people, mangroves and water quality along this pristine coastline, the plant had moved quickly through the approval process, until local residents got involved. They were worried about the impact on their scenic and ancient town and their health and organized a Save Lamu campaign to try and block the plant's construction. It would have been the largest emitter of CO2 gases in Kenya, but the Kenya courts have just put a stop to it, citing incomplete environmental impact assessments.

Are they going to use corrosive sea water as coolant? The plant will need a lot of maintenance as the joints corrode and leak losing steam power to the turbines. Kenya does not do maintenance well-look at Tabs and other power infrastructure!

Let them build it. It will fail. Let of the rest of the tax payers who are ignoring lamus plight pick the tax bill in high finance service loans the government will borrow. Look at the Chinese loans and the railway.

The fuel ash will create a waste mountain with complex chemical leaching on water catchment and ground water system. The water needed to drive the steam turbines will need to come from and go to somewhere. Where from and where to

The land grab was what happened on the holiday strip North and south coast Mombasa that drove out the villages on the coast belonging to Chonyi, Kambe, Duruma, Kauma, Ribe, Rabai, Jibana, and Giriama. What happened to the handful of Galla villages. Where are the Gallas now?
