  • Here's a new version of our Grumman Duck flight with added Voice-Over and Cockpit Review by Kermit Weeks. He adds a full review of the Duck's cockpit to the video. Then, delivers another informative voice-over of the flight, that includes a water landing and some passes from a ground camera. Take the Duck ride again and hear Kermit's description first hand about the flight. Quack, quack!

While I love all your videos, this one was special. My grandfather, J Howard Chamblin, had many fond memories of his days flying as a naval photographer in a J2F. In 1939, a photo survey expedition sailed out of Pearl Harbor for the Phoenix Island group. It consisted of two seaplane tenders, the USS Pelican and USS Swan, each carrying a J2F on the fantail. We heard many, many stories of those days. He loved the Duck and the relatively care-free pre-war days of aerial survey missions. I proudly hang on my wall a photo he took of a flight of J2Fs over Oahu; the pilot of his plane on that flight was none other than P.I. Gunn, who, like granddad, had come up "through the hawsepipe" from the enlisted ranks to become a naval flight officer. Thank you, Kermit, for keeping this heritage alive and flying. My grandfather made it to 94 years of age and never stopped telling those stories. Seeing your J2F taking wing brings back so many memories of a great man who was a hero to his family. Thank you.

When I first heard about Kermit and his planes I thought "great some spoiled trust fund guy playing like he's a real pilot." I'm man enough to admit I was wrong. I personally can't think of another individual that has put more time, money, and knowledge into preserving the history of flight. Seriously, if the NASM doesn't end up with a Kermit Hangar then we have failed as a community.

An absolutely awesome aircraft. That would great to have here in Wisconsin. I live on the Wisconsin River and that could be my runway. There are lakes everywhere and of course plenty in Minnesota as well as the biguns like Lake Michigan and Superior. All the hunting, fishing, and camping I could do with that! You're a lucky guy Kermit!

I wonder if this is the same Duck that was in a museum in Southern California.... If so I touched it. It had a coffee can hanging off the exhaust pipe to keep oil off the floor. P.s. I saw a Duck at the Reno air races doing
acrobatic's long ago. Like you said it was loud. Thanks for the excellent
video. I was about 9-10 years old when going to the museum also on the property was a row of about 8 Pby
Catalina's and a fuselage of a B24 right next to the road. No fences no gates in 1962. Back to the museum, I walked outside in the back and here is the strangest AC I had ever seen. Not until I watched the great film did I know what it was. Very sad ending for that airplane 😰.

Brilliant vid as ever Mr W - Love the look of the Duck and your story of flying into your previous base with the quack "callsign". As a spectator, I found it hard to appreciate the Duck, but after watching you fly it, and seeing how much you like flying it, I see it in a new light. Thanks. As you can see, these videos are almost historical documents by the time I see them, but I can't help wondering if a couple of weight compensating springs would help the landing gear?

Fantasy of flight for thousands of aviation nerds, thanks Kermit. It’s the real thing and you can’t be thanked enough for sharing it with us- so few of us, what’s wrong with people ? I comment fairly regularly that my dad smacked a u-boat with a 461RAAF Sunderland and l was brought up surrounded by uncles who flew Spitfires , hurricanes, boomerangs, liberators in the front lines of Libya, Europe, bay of Biscay, new guinea, Atlantic, SW pacific. What a burden!
Anyway I would like to see the Sunderland doing touch and goes on your local lake, it is a class machine with US engines.

I would like to know a lot more about the interior. Particularly the passenger areas. It seems to me that there is room for three, but only two seats. The rear seat can be high for the passenger to sit in, or low for the same passenger to look out the low windows. It doesn't turn around so if the passenger wants to face backwards, he has to put the seat in the low position and stand on it.
