- Stymied by injuries and pushed to the brink of playoff elimination by a pair of close season-ending losses, the defending Super Bowl Champion Redskins rediscovered their winning ways to upset the Minnesota Vikings in the ’92 NFC Wild Card Game at the Metrodome.
Brian Mitchell carried the day - the whole team, really - with 200 all-purpose yards including a spectacular kick return, a rushing touchdown, and a second quarter fake punt run from which the Vikings never recovered. After staging an impressive 79-yard game-opening touchdown drive, the Vikings were history as the Redskins defense held Minnesota to only 69 yards for the rest of the game (including just NINE YARDS in the second half).
The victory would be the last for Joe Gibbs 1.0, as the Redskins would lose yet another close one in San Francisco the following week. Gary Clark caught his last Redskins TD as well in this contest that truly marked the end of an era for Washington football.
The great Al Michaels, along with Frank Gifford and the ever-bloviating Dan Dierdorf on the call for the last hoorah from those Redskins 80’s Glory Days.

Funny tidbit: This ‘92 Redskins team actually needed Minnesota to beat Green Bay the week before to make the playoffs.
And they repaid the favor by crushing the Vikings in this game.
The 1992 Redskins were amazing finished 9-7 after losing 60+ man games to injury and they nearly made it to the NFC Championship game. I remember after the 49ers playoff game Andrea Kramer was interviewing Pierce Holt of the Niners and she said to him "those guys showed you why they are champions." And he replied "they sure did we have alot of respect for them." He was right everybody should. I was very proud of that Skins team they got knocked down and got up and answered the bell everytime. #HTTR4LIFE
A fumbled handoff by Rypien and Brian Mitchell was the only thing that kept my Redskins from going to the NFC Championship game against Dallas.
I think they lose to Dallas but they put up a better fight than the Eagles ended up( 34-10)doing
I remember that team being ravaged by injuries and they still almost beat the 49ers the following week
That was Clark's last touchdown as a REdskin
"This is surgery without the anesthetic." Dan Dierdorf
The last victory of Gibbs 1.0
These were the good ole days..!
Future Redskin Terry Allen is playing for the Vikes here
Jack Del Rio (Commanders DC) playing for the Vikings!!
Skins last playoff win until January of 2000. At the time who knew?
Curious if you have the Cowboys vs Redskins 92 at RFK?
Have a beautiful recording of that very excellent game. Will share in the future, and edit with extra care. 😁
@@topoftheapple8139 . Actually Danny Copeland recovered the fumble in the endzone instead of Alvoid Mays.
Art Monk was a fantastic WR!!Did he make the HOF?
Yes. It’s Gary Clark who is left out undeservedly.
@@RetroSkins Ok I grew up a Falcon fan ! I watched a lot of Redskins games especially playoff time because Atl sucked and never played in the playoffs in the 80s . I always respected the team! And John Riggings won a ring with Washington a former Falcon
