    Ok, I get why it’s funny that they want a Vespa, but it is kind of nice because of how simple and relatable it is, Luca and Alberto are kids, and the Vespa is kind of the equivalent of a PS5 Or a Nintendo switch, it’s kind of nostalgic for some adults because they remember they’re hopes and dreams as a kid. Like compared to all the other disney antagonists, I couldn’t find any reason to like him at all. Jafar was a cool sorcerer, Gaston was a funny air headed beef head. I could see assault early on in the movie when he tries to force Luca into the fountain, but I can actually see why he might not get charged with anything for what happened at the end. Remember, the government in this town was rewarding 300,000 lira for dead sea monsters. Clearly, they are not legally considered people here, and the local government wants them dead. While the sudden and very swift change of public perception will likely change that, they're not going to charge anyone who tried to hunt seamonsters retroactively when the local government was actively trying to reward that behavior.

    They don’t just want a Vespa, they want to run away, on a Vespa, together. Ig it’s just my opinion but I think it’s about Luca wanting to find freedom since he feels trapped under the surface by his family. Alberto doesn’t have anyone to hold onto, and running away with Luca would mean Luva would depend on him, and that Luca couldn’t turn away. Alberto wants to run away on the Vespa to keep Luca close. ‘Tis just my theory. Maybe I’m reading to deep into this.

    • @PixieoftheWood
      @PixieoftheWood Před 2 lety +32

      Honestly, I agree. I think the 'run away together' was a more important part than the vespa itself. If it was really just about riding a vespa, then he wouldn't have as much of a reason to be jealous of Giulia, because he could still get a vespa and ride off on it if he wanted.

    • @KlutzyNinjaKitty
      @KlutzyNinjaKitty Před rokem +21

      Exactly. For the first time, Alberto found someone who held him in high esteem and really wanted to be around him. But, Luca was initially drawn to Alberto because of his confidence and “knowledge” of the surface world. When they meet Giulia, who actually knows things about human civilization and school, Alberto’s not as “shiny” to Luca anymore. Of course, they’re still friends despite this. But Alberto’s blind to that fact BECAUSE he’s been left behind before.
      I feel like this is one of the better instances of “the jealous friend” trope because Alberto being possessive of Luca makes actual sense when you factor in his loneliness and abandonment issues. He’s not just jealous for the sake of drama. It fits with his character. And a lot of people can relate to not being THE best friend anymore. It hurts even if you don’t have baggage!
      I don’t feel like Luca is Pixar’s best movie. But, I do still really like it because of how well-written the main 3 are.

    Even though I know you were being sarcastic, I think some of those "negatives points" that you pointed out actually bring some charm to the movie. "Luca" reminds me of those comic books that you read during your childhood, like "Peanuts", "Little Lulu", or, in my case, "Mônica's Gang". The adventure is not so complex, but keeps being charming and interesting. It's a little more emotional because it's Pixar, of course, but stills very similar to the childhood adventures that those comic books show, which leads to be similar to our own experiencies. Afterall, who didn't have a "friend" who was such a douchebag like Ercole or was prohibited by our parents to do something because they heard it was dangerous, but you did anyway (like climb a tree, swim in a lake, eat too much candy, dance in the rain and so on)?
    And thats why I like Luca so much. It is not a heavy, dark story with complex plots, but a childhood light story that reminds us of our own early days, when everything were simplier and funnier.

      See, that's the problem with symbols. When a character has a clear motivation, problem, conflict, it gives them depth and psychological complexity. When it's symbolic, all of that is gone. So you can understand the symbol (is it necessary to use a symbol at all? or it's just to be "more profound"?) but the character remains shallow af. Because while the story might be interpreted symbolically, a character is what they are. So using Vespa as a symbol of freedom doesn't take away from the story, but it does take away from the character.

    Luca is such a cute and beautiful story. Literally, it's so beautiful to look at. Yeah, maybe the whole Vespa thing is ridiculous, but it emphasizes how young they are. You don't need a super important reason to do something "life-changing". Wanting something simple, and perhaps uncomplicated makes this relatable. I always thought it's more about hanging out with friends, going on an adventure together, than the Vespa itself. Yeah, I thought it was weird that the townspeople lacked reaction too XD, but then again, a movie can't be as perfect as Coco or Up. It's been a while since an animation centers around friendship.

    I honestly liked Luca. It strays from Pixar's usual formula, and instead gives us a movie about characters who are the target demographic's age going on a fun summer adventure in a location based on a real place, with a beautiful color palette, well thought out-characters, a villain that is like someone you would meet in real life (egoistic kid who can be kinda insane sometimes and believes that they are above everyone even though they are super forgettable, and doesn't take it when someone talks sense into them), and with a touch of fantasy that also helps build on to the story. It's one of those stories that brings you to the good old days, and can be quite comforting while also trying to make you cry.

    This was a really funnny video to watch! great job on editing and jokes
    I have a disagreement with parts of your review, one very specific one being:
    9:42 where you say "alberto starts to hate Giulia and is clingy out of nowhere"
    but then later you explain that 12:35 "Alberto was actually abandoned and has abandonment issues and thats why the thought of luca leaving for school was to much"
    I feel like you are contradicting yourself a little bit here. Alberto gets negative and jelous of anything that might make luca realize that alberto "is bad" and thus make luca leave him.
    hence, abandonment issues. its not specificly Giulia, or the school, that he hates "out of nowhere". So i feel that critisism was pretty weak overall.
    Otherwise enjoyable watch, keep it up!

      Thanks for stopping by! ❤️ Yeah I didn't really elaborate on that part well but my main point there was that its the WAY they made Alberto hate Giulia that felt rushed, not Alberto's character. Apart from like a couple of short scenes there really wasn't much build up for that conflict. Well, in my opinion.

      Yeah, I thought Alberto's 'clinginess' was pretty well established. He seems to be trying to impress him from the start, is very protective of him pretty early on, and has little hints at his insecurity from the start. Directing it at Guilia might not have taken a lot of scenes, but I'm not sure it necessarily would take a lot of scenes to establish it when it's his insecurity talking. They do a good job of directing his gaze so you see it's moments like her putting her hand on Luca that trigger it, and considering he was abandoned on an island and seems to have internalized the idea that he's not a 'good kid', his reaction does make sense to me.

    This was a pretty good video, but I disagree on some points. First of all, the movie isn’t supposed to be some grand adventure, nor was supposed to have a deeper meaning. The antagonist is one dimensional because it makes sense for him to be. He’s a rich little asshole, and you aren’t supposed to feel for him. He’s not supposed to be deep and conflicted, nor have a motivation beyond “I want to win, and these poor people are in my way. I saw someone else say this, but Alberto was abandoned. He was jealous of Julia because in his mind, she was taking away his only friend. All in all, great video, some not great points, 7/10

Disney is pretty egotistical and makes sure that everyone knows it's Disney first and PIXAR second. Which is why we get films of low quality in plot from PIXAR, I'm pretty sure. Actually, Alberto getting jealous felt very natural to me.
    Luca was probably the first person offering him validation since his father left him behind. If Luca now decides to "trade him in for a better friend", then it just confirms to him that everybody might leave him behind someday since he's just "not good enough".
    There's a short film about Alberto and Massimo's relationship that kinda dives a little deeper into that mindset. It's actually a very realistic portrayal of child abandonment and it's implications, without Pixar feeling the need to overexplain it.
    Edit: it is also the main reason on why Alberto feels the need to pretend like he's such an all knowing guy about the surface when facing Luca. He likely feels as if being himself would "not be good enough" to make somebody want to hang out with him. The fact that he gets butthurt when Giulia explains the stars better to Luca then he ever did, underlines this.
    Again, everything is implied, not overexplained in some sort of forced emotional trauma dump. Which I really like....
