      So, someone going to war against a tyrannical government that is executing people for no reason is bad?
      I know this isn't related to the story or movie whatsoever but I'm trying to determine if you mean unnecessary wars such as idiots fighting for religious reasons or if you mean wars in general.
      Regardless if the war happened because of famine or, lack of resources.
      While yes, the war in the movie is completely and utterly stupid, real life tends to be a bit more gray area.
      Sometimes wars don't have a reason, sometimes they do.
      Its the ones with a valid reason that are in the gray area and tend to be morally confusing.

    I also really hate the message. Sisu was basically telling Raya “You can trust people” as if she doesn’t have reason to not trust Numaari. Numaari stabbed her back twice and ended up killing the last dragon but it’s Rayas fault for going from what she learned in the past. Like that’s a horrible message to teach children. Children shouldn’t be taught to trust people, even if they aren’t trustworthy

      @AllyGatorAnimator Před 2 lety +176

      It felt like they were going for three moral lessons all in one go, causing it to get muddled. "Don't shut everyone out based on bad past experiences" is a great message, but Numaari WAS the bad experience, so Raya has understandable cause to mistrust her. "You can reach people with an open heart" and "some people are capable of change" are also great messages and are a solid approach to redemption for Numaari, but they don't have Numaari show this well enough to warrant Raya trusting her (hell, he main conflict is due to her betraying Raya AGAIN).
      Honestly if they'd tweaked the moment right before the second betrayal it could have been REALLY interesting. Have Sisu be a mediator between them as she almost was in the movie but, instead of Numaari betraying them outright, have both Raya and Numaari be so wary that something minor causes the situation to rapidly escalate (e.g. they agreed on no weapons but realise both brought them anyway "because I knew YOU would," or one sees the other is fidgety and assumes they're going to be cast out so begins to argue). This then leads to a conflict against Raya and Numaari that causes Sisu to be killed in the crossfire, rather than because Numaari was literally aiming an arrow at her and Raya had an understandable reaction. It shows that sometimes there's too much water under the bridge for certain people, but when they come together as a group for somebody else they reach some semblance of peace and closure.

    The visuals, main character, and idea were amazing but the message to kids of "trusting everyone even if they backstabbed you twice and killed your friend" was HORRIBLE, like, it should've been "trust is earned not given"
    Sisu's design was aweful and she was so unfunny. Also omg what were the dragons even there for??? Litrally none of the plot involved Sisu at all, and Sisu was the only dragon who got to speak at all, no other dragon even got a voice actor. Also the plot of just gaining random friends from each nation along the way is just an absolute ATLA ripoff. I rate this movie at max 4/10 on just the visuals

      Pretty sure it wouldn't be much of a problem to rewrite Sisu's motto to "trust is earned not given" with just a few tiny changes to the story, because that dragon just doesn't really serves as anything. It could just be as well a statue of a dragon and nothing really will change that much.

      I don’t mind the message of learning to give trust first, but there’s still a breaking point. It’s one thing to offer it (as her dad did at the beginning), but a completely different thing to blindly trust people like Sisu. Wanting to see the good in people is admirable, but sisu was just being stupid, and she got taken advantage of very quickly in talon. What they should have focused on was finding a middle ground: don’t let past betrayals prevent you from trusting anyone else. Raya was betrayed, and reasonably didn’t trust Namari after. But Sisu (in the only part where I liked her) saw that she was hesitant and latched onto that, trusting that she would make the right choice, which she almost did. It’s a hard line to walk, but it could’ve been done better.

    Positive qualities of the film? Looks stunning. I'm in Hong Kong and I was able to see this in theaters and the visual experience was worth the price. I also love that an animation studio as top quality as Disney took on this awesome action driven story with swords and martial arts. I'm a sucker for that kind of stuff and it was great.
    Negatives? The modern dialogue in this high fantasy setting really took me out of the moment. I know other fantasy movies that do this too like How to train your dragon or Aladdin but for some reason in THIS movie it really distracted me. I think it's because it was trying way harder than it needed to sound cool, what with the action one liners, and all I could think was how dated everyone was going to sound in a few years.
    Also I don't think that the story does a good job of supporting it's message. It was pointed out to me how hypocritical it is for Disney to put out a "take a leap of faith and trust others' message when for the past 10 years they've only given us manipulative twist villains in their animation. With many instances within this film as well showing more of the dangers of trusting others too quickly than the positives of doing so.
    And for me personally I'm not a big fan of 'forgiveness' storylines where it's the responsibility for the one who was hurt to get over their trauma for the sake of others.
    Over all, top quality visuals but the script needed some re-writes.

    • @sEaNoYeAh
      @sEaNoYeAh Před 2 lety +42

      Thank god other people feel the same! The script was terrible, the dialogue and language used is jarring and feels distinctly out of place, and the plot and characters are so weak. I think the reason the modern North American influenced phrasing is so out of place here is because in Aladdin he's a street urchin, in How to Train Your Dragon they're a rough Viking clan, in each case they're characters who even within the context of their own worlds would not necessarily be expected to speak in a formal or eloquent manner. Genie works as well on two levels because to us he's breaking the fourth wall and making funny, Loony Tunes wacky references to the real world, and for Aladdin and the others in the world of the film Genie is this chaotic force of energy where much of what he says and manifests don't make sense, so to them a reference to the real world is passable as just more Genie nonsense. In Raya, she and Namaari are basically princesses, their parents are well spoken, so we expect them to talk in a way that makes sense in that context, and a dragon from five centuries ago is the last character we'd expect to sound modern.
      For the script I just wish Raya would react like a human being to literally anything. She barely spends two minutes reflecting on the loss of her father, she never talks about growing up in the apocalypse alone as a child. She never expresses guilt, she barely hints at in any way blaming herself for her part in the gem breaking or in Sisu getting shot, she just always instantly jumps to: blame Namaari, try to kill Namaari, even when the world is ending around her. When a dragon appears before her she's not in awe or overwhelmed, she reacts to the MAGICAL CREATURE no one has seen for 500 years in the same way you might react to an app that's kinda cool. And it just seems like nonsense even if you do blame Namaari to not even countenance the idea of asking if she'd like to help restore the gem and save the world. Even if you hated each other, who isn't going to be on board with saving the world, bringing back everyone everyone has lost? No one reflects on how many people have been lost, not even the guy whose entire village is gone, or the children who lost their families. The Druun scourge is practically the Thanos finger snap but it almost feels like there's no repurcussions.
      You're totally right about the moral messaging too, it just doesn't seem to fit the story, she doesn't have to learn a lesson so much as in the end the world is ending and there are no other options, and then they have a group hug with the woman Raya has repeatedly tried to kill in the recent past, a woman Raya has expressed nothing but anger for and blames for destroying the world in the first place. If she felt like that, as the movie keeps telling us she does, then trust or not in her mind that's still the person most responsible for like half the world getting turned to stone including Raya's beloved FATHER. The script is just terrible, it really is. Visually stunning movie though.

      Totally agree with you. Especially the dialogue messed with the immersion. Like in the other movies you mentioned, it sounds modern but still fits with the rest of the world. But here they make references to things that don't make even a little bit of sense in an apocalyptic monarchy driven wasteland. The whole group project line when Sisu appeared just felt so unfitting. Where would Raya have ever done a group project like this? She's the only princess trained to fight in a world full of hate and separation. It felt like cheap humor made to make uncritical viewers think "haha ancient dragon says relatable Meme" which just made me hyperaware that Sisu is an incredibly commercialized product and not an actual character.

    Ima just say a few things, and I have a feeling this may be a bit of a rant.
    First of all, Sisu's design: I think she was based on Chinese dragons or whatever that are very long and have no wings. But then again, her design is still kinda... I dont know how to describe it. I think you were right, they designed her to be easily made into toys and marketable. I think if they added SOME even remotely scary or 'dragon-like' fetures, her design would be much better, like sharp claws and teeth she uses to fight and/or intimidate others.
    Second, the moral of the movie: What their teaching kids specificly in this movie, is NOT good to be teaching kids. That being: 'Trust others, even if their untrustworthy'. Raya is right to be suspicious of Namaari (Sorry if I spelled that wrong, Ima be spelling it wrong most likley), she caused her to have trust issues, she stabbed Raya in the back. Twice. And yet. We should... still.. trust her? I think this movie is teaching kids to trust people who are untrust worthy.
    Third, Sisu's INSISTANCE of trusting others: Okay for this I think Sisu just needs to get with the times, and get her head out of the clouds. Yes, she grew up in the past when it was safe and fine to be trusting of others, but she's in a new enviroment and needs to learn if she is to survive. OFC she trusted her siblings. THEIR HER FAMILY. Namaari, on the other hand, has a record of stabbing everyone in the back fo rwhat she thinks is right. Raya has nno, absolutely NO reason to trust her. Sisu NEEDS to learn this.
    Anyways, this comment is already WAAAYYY too long. So have a good day/night.

What excited me most was the ending and the character of Namaari, who actually gave me the cold puke in one sentence, the film sucked

    I was so hyped when I heard it based on SEA. Very disappointed in the dragon design. There are a lot of dragons in SEA, but not this, not a cotton candy dragon. Then I watched the movie, the world is amazing. I really love all the clans. The plot and some characters are just awful. Like that amazing world is wasted on this plot.

    It's such a shame that the moral drags this movie's plot down so much. The animation, design, fight choreography and all is so cool. And it was nice to see a badass fighter Disney princess again. I feel like Disney will take it as a sign this kind of stuff isn't popular when it's actually just the messiness of the story.
    Edit: I also disliked the dragon design. I liked that they took inspiration from Asian dragons but it looks so incredibly made to be marketable, no personality. It doesn't even fit in with the rest of the world, Sisu always looks out of place.

    There is one thing that really confuses me about the plot that changes the entire movie for the worst. If using the gem stops the Drude and saves all the people who were turned into statues, why weren't the Dragons saved the first time it was used but were saved the second time it was used?
    There is absolutely no difference between either use of the gem, but because of plot reasons, somehow the first use of the gem wasn't enough.
    I understand that if the gem worked fully the first time around, we wouldn't even have the movie's plot, but that just makes it a poorly written plot if you have to break the rules of your established world just to have any story whatsoever.

    Like wtf is the theme of the movie??? Don’t trust people or trust everyone??? Like why should I trust the fang girl with the parts of the gems, like she got the gem broke, killed the dragon, and nearly killed raya multiple times like why the hell should she trust her?? Also we need more character development with raya, like show her loosing hope as she doesn’t find sisu at the river ends. And I also agree with the dragon designs, like dude make the dragons look more like eastern dragons instead of furry sausages with horns. Also I hate the baby, like why a baby and some monkeys, and babies aren’t that smart and I hate this baby for being so. Also it makes no sense that the dragons had specific powers in their parts of the gem, like at the end it’s showed that they all have the same powers so why associate specific powers with specific siblings when everyone has the same dang powers! Like wtf I hate this movie

      They don't look very much alike, this is true, but one thing they both do have in common is that they don't look like My Little Pony characters. Sisu is for some reason designed very mammalian, and her face is awfully humanesque and "cute", but it just ends up making her uncanny to look at for me. She does not even remotely look like the Bakunawa or Phaya Nak she was based on.

    @whistlebird Před rokem +4

    What the movie said: trust everyone!
    What the movie showed: trusting people can lead to betrayal and pain and the end of the world! Until the end of the movie. Then everyone is good.
    If it was going to be about trust, the movie should have kept the message consistent at least, and more nuanced. Let Raya learn that SOME people can be trusted, and others can earn back trust after that was betrayed, and you can't trust some people at all. Let the group grow to rely on one another through the things they experience and let Namaari show some remorse and try trusting in Raya a bit herself.
    I think it would have meant a lot more if they all gave their piece of the gem to Raya in the end, not Namaari who showed no trust or trustworthiness through the entire movie. After the rest gave up theirs, Namaari could have finally let go of her own distrust toward Raya who repeatedly gave her another chance to do the right thing.
