The worst part is they gave up actual entertainment for female empowerment here, but... *They failed that too.* Not every woman has chi running through their veins that magically makes them good at everything. So how the fuck is this supposed to inspire them?

The best thing about Mulan as a character was her determination and capacity to face challenges, but they took that away. They threw away what really made her a strong woman and gave her superhero powers instead.
Something else I hate is how the main villain dies.
In the animated version, he gets launched into a bunch of fireworks and exploding in a fire of colors. Cartoony, but somewhat realistic. You can absolutely die from fireworks.
In the live action version, the emperor catches an arrow flying at him at top speed like an anime character, throws it, and Not Mulan kicks it with enough power to pierce and kill him.
They absolutely butchered it. No other words for it.
"Butchered" is pretty appropriate in this context

Spy Kids IS the best action movie
Um.... W O T
Spy Kids 3 and 4 were the best
Well technically at that time period it was but I can understand where your going here
No no clearly Shark Boy and Lava Girl are the best.
You know, I've been thinking about this for a long time. You mention that the cricket gets all the hate in the world for ruining Mulan's chances with the matchmaker and not Mulan herself. That is true and the cricket deserves it, but why was the cricket given to Mulan? It was given by her Grandmother based on the belief that crickets give good luck, and we clearly see this belief is false.
And with that understanding, a gong went off in my head. This theme, the idea of traditions being flawed or even counterintuitive is shown all the way throughout the film, not just in the human charecters, but in the story beats as well.
Going back to the grandma, her belief in the cricket's luck is almost hypocritical as her first line is her chiding the mother's worries.
("I should have prayed to the ancestors for luck."
"How much luck can they be? They're dead.")
It is true that she crossed the road, but that could have happened without the cricket.
Mushu is the only one of the guardians we see and from minute one, we are shown is unhelpful and pathetic at his job. (Rip Fa Zane) And when he tries to awaken The Great Stone Dragon, he does so with no reverence, no care to this being it is hinted is far above anything he could have been.
Speaking of The Great Stone Dragon, this thing is given such importance, such reverence by the family and ancestors. In the scene before Mulan's haircutting, we see her beside the statue, sitting in it's lap as a child would a comforting parent for guidance. And yet she makes her own decision after seeing the turmoil of her actual family. And the final nail in the coffin is that this great statue is just that, a statue, broken by what is reguarded as a failure of a spirit.
But the biggest thing that cements this all is how Mushu ensures the troop goes to war; not by magic trickery or spiritual divination, but by disguising as a human messenger with news.
In short the animated movie is the theme 'magic doesn't help you win' done right rather than treating it as a wink to the audience.
That’s actually a really intriguing analysis.
it could be argued that cricket ruining the meeting with the matchmaker *was* good luck as it set in motion the series of events that led to Mulan saving China, though I am quite a fan of your take on things too

I am a straight man. Mulan is one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. 1998 one. In that version she had something called character growth. She starts out as bumbling somewhat of a disappointment to her parents who doubts her worth in the family. Yet she deeply loves her family enough to the point of going her fathers place where impersonating a man would mean death. She is weak physically at first bad at anything martial and yet with time and training she grows stronger and earns the respect from her fellow soldiers. She leads by example and puts her life on the line to save China her friends and most importantly her family by going to shoot the cannon by herself. She is revealed to be a woman and banished. She again saves China well at least the emperor. When she gets home she is accepted well more so haha and she’s confident to approach li Shang for dinner. The songs are awesome the set up etc. it’s funny it shows mass death wounds war fighting. It also shows the amount of sexism that has existed historically in which women have been oppressed and how she overcame stereotypes and earned respect of men to show the strength all women possess. Yet this movie screwed that up. She’s a Mary sue who is the quote unquote the secret weapon from the start. The whole shell die is not there. There is no character growth cuz there’s almost no character. Obviously I was very very disappointed with the remake haha.

what i believe made the original mulan so special was mulan herself. she didn’t get free passes, she trained with all the other men and still was able to prove herself a strong team mate. team mate, not person. she fought within a team, where she relied on her partners and they relied on her. she didn’t become ‘better’ than everyone because of some magical chi, she worked hard and it payed off. this remake just makes a mockery out of it.
zuko is a simp Disney be like: *we now copy overpowered anime protagonists*
EXACTLY. They take everything that I loved before but I said to my self let's give a chance. Well. I WAS WRONG! I love Mulan because she did battle in every part of the movie, she did her best, she never give up, even when it's world against her. Her family is far away, her friends are disappointed with her, the man she loves and admires it's felling betrayed, she lost everything, and yet she choose to get up and fight for her country and for the people that she love.
its almost like characters growing, needing to face actual challenges, and having depth make good characters.
Here we have someone who was a physical god from the start for bullshit reasons not being challenged or showing any particular prowess other than "im just good at it", not interacting with or deeply affecting other likeable characters, who shows next to no emotions, and faces few threats (like the baddies causing the avalanche themselves to prove their incompetence).
@@ee-td3ex except op anime protagonists usually have psychoemotional growth arcs to make up for it.
It's just not relatable. When I watch Mulan training in the original movie, I feel empowered because we watch her go from being one of the weakest, someone more at most regular girls' level, to being a strong warrior just like the guys. The best part of the animated Mulan was the fact that Mulan wasn't magical or special, beyond her tenacity and intelligence. She manages to succeed because she finds unconventional solutions and refuses to give up. Take that out and what the hell is even the point??
Plus that her unconventional solutions do not make her overpowered. Like how she fired at the mountain instead of shan yu to win the war, yet that made the guy survive in the end. It is a depiction of actual human decisions and not just what the plot wants for it to end.

@@paulitopichipoothingi8573 what
Original movie: if you work hard, you can achieve anything. Stay determined to reach your goal!
Remake: sorry u need special powers to be as strong as others
The two scenes I feel they failed the most are training scene and the village scene.
First the training scene, in the original, we see our cast of characters be really bad and them struggling. They're trying to improve, but Mulan is pretty much told to leave because she's falling behind everyone else's progress. So she decides to go for the arrow, realizing the proper technique is important not just pure determination. And by using her smarts, she gets the arrow. This marks a turning point and we see everyone actually becoming good!
What did the live action do? Mulan walks up a hill with water and succeeds on her first try. She doesn't struggle, she uses her fucking magic powers. This is also very similar a task they did while training in the animated one, where everyone else was going just fine. BUT NOPE! This time Mulan is the one who succeeds while everyone else struggles. I don't think there's a single scene in this movie where she gets better at anything, everything just comes easy to her thanks to her chi powers. How do you expect me to root for her when she stays pretty much the same the entire movie???
Second, the village scene. In the original they're singing a happy song for fun, just for the song to cut when they find the village. We go from a bright cheery song, into a dark awful event. You see everyone taking it in, the destruction and loss of life. You feel the shock, the grief, you feel what the characters feel. And after this scene, they don't sing anymore. Things have changed and they need to take the war seriously. They found a girl worth fighting for when they were too late and found the lost doll of a girl who has lost her life.
I'll be honest, I can't even remember the live action one beside from what was showm in the video. That's how lazy and boring it was. *How* do you go from a scene that sticks with you for years into a scene that is so worthless and not important you can't remember it at all?

I’m mad that they didn’t include Mushu the dragon, that was what made the animated one so special to me as a kid
Thank Christ that this movie didn’t win an Oscar. I was genuinely terrified that it would have when I watched the Oscars earlier this year.
Dragons are too unrealistic, but a phoenix and witch-sorceress aren’t?
Ikr? Look at what Game of Thrones did with their dragons and tell me multiBILLION dollar Disney can't do better. They just... It just... No.
I guess maybe it’s either because:
A. They thought Eastern dragons would be confusing since many Eastern countries adopted the same design of the dragon (only country I can think of would be Japan).
Or
B. This production team couldn’t animate or incorporate the small dragon (forgot his name). Where they weren’t able to (or didn’t bother to) animate the dragon climbing over things or having him interact things in the real world.
Either way, it’s pretty disappointing and nonsensical that the dragon from the original isn’t in the remake, yet add a witch and a Phoenix despite the two being unrealistic.
Edit: apparently it’s because the animated mulan movie depicted dragon(s) as dumb and clumsy instead of wise. Which is ‘offensive’ to the culture. Even though the remake could have easily made the dragon much more wise instead of it being clumsy in the original.
EXACTLY!!!
That's exactly what I'm thinking!! ._.
From what I've heard about this movie, they didn't have dragons because the way the animation depicted dragons was dumb and offensive to the culture. Not because it was unrealistic
the message from this movie is women can only be strong if they were born special and "not like other girls"

i love these comments
This movie was not good. To make the witch a better villain, I would let it be that the witch is Mulan’s sister. The live-action remake replaced the grandmother with her sister. The reason why her sister, aka the witch would attack Mulan is that she felt rejected by her own family. Because of Mulan’s chi powers, her family gave all of the love and attention to Mulan instead of her. The family would look down to the sister because they believed that she wasn’t and never will be as good as Mulan. This would at the VERY LEAST make the villain a little bit better.
Mulan is my favorite Disney movie and I could watch it 7 hounded billion times and not get bored. The characters are great, the scenes are great, the songs are amazing, the be a man scene and Mulan’s “transformation” are on the list of my favorite movie scenes ever. This movie took away everything I loved about Mulan. Instead of having a dramatic scene with her dressing up as a man to go to war with a great score, lets just have her immediately get in armor and leave. Instead of making Mulan train to become a warrior and seeing her struggle, the more realistic path, they just made her have superpowers. Instead of the scene seeing Mulan combine brain and muscle, the scene that makes more sense since biologically, the men there would be stronger than her, nah fuck that, let’s just make her stronger than them and ignore biology. Instead of having charming side characters, let’s make bland characters with no depth or personality at all. Instead of the amazing songs, let’s take bad instrumental versions of them.
This movie makes me so fucking mad
Wasn’t the point of Mulan was that she was training all her life to be a perfect wife/woman and failing miserably, but excelled above all the older men at being a warrior/man in a few weeks?
and the main reason she was so good at being a soldier was because she was forced to think outside of the box / work even harder than the men bc of her desperation to be respected and to keep her gender a secret. also she was super smart and good at finding other solutions to things.
Ah, screw all that character development. Let's just give her powers without any point of her training for no particular reason except that she's a girl.
But nah fuck that, now Mary Sue Rey, I mean Mulan has super powers and can do anything since she was a baby
But In the army it was more strict and she had to think more becuase when you fight there isn’t much plan
@@AnnoyingMystery I loved that about the original Mulan. She was a good soldier, but not by brute force. She wasn't a superhero, and was actually weaker phisically than the men. BUT she was clever and outsmarted the rest of the soldiers.
She climbed the pole not because she was the strongest, but because she was the smartest.
She beat the villain (who seemed to have superhuman strenght) not by beating him up, but by being smarter.
I was so confused how Mulan could run on walls... then I realized Isaac Newton hasn’t invented gravity yet

Okay, you got me there. xD
I think we can all see what happened and why this guy deleted his comment
It makes me think they were more trying to make the next “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” than a remake of Mulan.
I know you touched a bit on this, but just wanted to point a bit more out:
A big part of the original Mulan is where she joins the military. She stands out, and trying to blend in is really difficult for her. However, after sheer determination to protect her home, she learns how to fight smarter, and actually improves in her training. The song Be A Man is my favorite song, and it shows Mulan struggling WITH the new recruits. But thanks to Mulan’s inspiration, they also improved. All of them work hard, and improve.
And that’s the big part. BOTH Mulan and the recruits struggle, but they get better. They work hard to get as strong as they are. And that is truly inspiring
However, in this live action trash remake, the writers just take the idea of Mulan working hard to get stronger, and burn it to the ground. They give her all the strength, skill and power she needs without her having to even work hard for it. And their only explanation is that she has “A lot of Chi.” It’s not at all inspiring for any audience, despite Disney’s efforts to make a “good female character”, they instead inadvertently wrote a character that pretty much tells you “you need to be born special to be badass and cool and strong”. They make Mulan an unnecessary girlboss all for the sake of “inspiring female audiences”. And they executed it so badly. Even now, their newer films are all completely discarding the original movie, and making it all about the girls and how badass they are🤦
Mulan [1998] : "Anyone Can Be a Hero !"
Mulan [2020] : _(Closes Book and Fixes Glasses)_

Having a women character just be special without having to start of weaker and show growth is the definition of insulting writing.
It hurts that they tried to make this movie more feminist by completely removing the actual feminism. In the original Mulan trained hard and proved she was intelligent, an excellent leader, and team player. In this movie it’s basically telling women that you are incapable of breaking gender roles unless you are literally magic
Feminism is about dismantling the patriarchy.
This movie spent way, way more time establishing the fact that Mulan was a female than they did establishing characters.

Seeing how Mulan is like, one of, if not, the strongest Disney princess, this really dulls down that fact.
Giving her chi just makes her overpowered. What really made her a great woman was the fact that she trained hard to protect those she loved and her home. All of the original princesses are better for empowering woman than what is current on screens today. Even the more girly girl ones have better messages.
i agree, with the whole her being born with powers gives me a "i wish i can be her" not a "if i work hard like her, i will be her"
Back then being strong meant overcoming hurdles you previously couldn't, nowadays it means getting everything handed to you on a silver platter and make it look like you earned it.

I’ll go to war. We won. The Emperor offers me a promotion. I go home instead. After 12 years, you didn’t know I was a woman.” There’s nothing beyond the barest bones of a story, and only three characters are mentioned.

Bart: Mulan is the worst Disney live-action remake.

One thing I get, from the over-the-top fight scenes, is that the director actually just wanted to make a goofy, fun kung-fu movie, but had to mishmash that with Mulan.
I honestly hope whoever the director is, manages to escape long enough to make that kung-fu movie.
Most of these terrible live action movies wouldn't be created if people just acknowledged that animation isn't inferior to live action. Animation is its own medium with which you can tell amazing stories! It isn't something to be avoided.
So true, but sadly people have already being brainwashed, especially by tv, to think that animation is always, ALWAYS, for kids.
My parents can't watch animation, or if they do, they will think is childish, I can give them something like Castlevania and, just seeing a frame, will say child stuff.
It's sad, but it seems is the direction we are going :c
Yes, or thought of as a inferior replacement until so-called lifelike fx can be reproduced as justification for using real humans in remakes. (See every superhero cartoon being remade in the last few decades.) Animation is its own unique art form created by myriad artists deserving respect unconnected to any other medium by comparison.
And that voice actors are better for animated films. It's literally their job. Part of the reason these remakes bomb is celebrity casting. They're casting people who can't voice act to save their lives.
They just want to make money, not a statement. I guess

Oh... OH NO, SHE IS THAT BAD
This has GOT to be the worst of Disney's live-action remakes EVER! First of all, everything that was FUN was taken out of this film -- no talking animals, no songs, not even any really funny moments. It was basically a drama/action flick, with no real attempts at humor. Also, in the original film, Mulan was just an ordinary girl who knew what she needed to do, and she went out and did it. She worked hard to gain the respect of her fellow soldiers, and put her life on the line more than once. But this new version of Mulan was totally unrelatable because she was born with ninja powers, didn't really have to struggle that much in the army, and she won every single battle she got involved in. Who was this movie made for, anyway? Sounds like it was made much for Chinese audiences than American ones, and certainly not for children. Most kids would probably be bored out of their minds within five minutes with THIS film!
I was avoiding this video for a while because I was trying to avoid spoilers... Yes, I now realize how dumb that is.
