- The Dawes Super Galaxy has been around for a long time and has a great steel framed reputation.
Mary Contrary has just got a new ( to her ) bike and we go for a ride and have a chat about it.
En Route we come across a rather deep ford at Foston Lincolnshire and have a laugh riding through it

You have some good bike builders across the pond, Shand and many others, we have Waterford bikes, you don't see many handmade brands anymore.
👍👍👍
Great description of the Dawes Galaxy as “ genteel”. I have aluminium, carbon & titanium bikes and I picked up an early 80’s Galaxy from a charity shop for just £75. I’ve spent money on new tyres and brake blocks and used it exclusively in January and February this year doing 1,600 miles on it, including a century ride. It’s comfy, reliable and is a massive talking point whenever I stop anywhere. It’s a nostalgic time machine. After using disc brakes, it’s a bit scary with centre pulls, but I did fall in love with it. The 531 tubing was what I aspired to get in my teens. It’s the genuine article and will probably last a lot longer than my carbon bike. It has a 30 year start 😂
yes Jonathan - this style of bike is timeless - brakes are the only downside after modern discs!
400 for Reynolds 853, in the states I've seen them several hundred more, some old road bikes for for $1,000 to 1,200 can't beat that steel for ride comfort, a nice one on bikes direct is called the Mercier kilo GXT11, sadly they are sold out, they were going for $799.99 that's compared to bikes in the $1,200 range.
👍👍👍👍
Well done Mary. Great miles for the week. Enjoy your new bike 🚴♀️
Thankyou! 🙂
cool steele i have one for the summer hahaha yes steel eternal ride my colnago master with love you to so to see cheers marry and compagnion nice riding pleasure in live keeps you strong
👍👍👍👍
Great ride, I did notice the extra cage, what a great idea. I’m lucky my trek has extra storage in the down tube. Although I use that for spare tubes, and have bar bag for my tools, although they can sometimes rattle.
Loved the fact you both went through the Ford!
Hi Michelle..... Yes its handy place to stick an extra cage. The ford did make us laugh..... I'm still smiling thinking of Mary's laughter 😂👍🚲
Lovely Dawes Super Galaxy Mary!👍🙂🚴. I've got the 'baby' aluminium frame Horizon from 2007. Got a Brooks saddle too. Expensive purchase but my bum loves it! 🤣 Dawsey did a cartwheel a couple of years back, landing on the seat, breaking the nose bolt. I was gutted, as my eight year old Brooks went all floppy! Sent it off to Brooks, easy peasy to arrange. Both Dawsey and Brooksey still going strong! 👍🤣🚴
Wow that’s great service, definitely worth the cash outlay 🙂
Hi Tony. Always good to affectionately name your bike 😊👍🚲
@@PaulGreenVlog ...I call my MTB Focus Highland Peak, umm, "Buster"..it's a "must" that we name our trusty steeds!.. but I try not to talk to them whilst negotiating busy junctions!🤣🚴👍
I will continue to use the bridge 🐔
😂👍🚲 My feet were almost dry by the time I got home 😭🚵
Hi Paul and Mary great video
I have got a super galaxy had it about 4 years now use it for work
Never lets me down touch wood
The best part my brooks saddle
The best saddle I have had. I know you're going to say it's hard but after a few miles on a bike you can not beat it a bit a loving care goes a long way on you're back side.
Best wishes Dave B
I’ve got the Brooks Flyer and it has fitted me perfectly from day 1- I don’t even have to wear cycling shorts 🙂 After getting one I’d never use another saddle!
Cheers Dave - another Super Galaxy fan!
Great ride , and chirpy happy lady, also , glad you said miles and not kilometres, don’t no why but I find it annoying when someone mentions distance in this country in kilometres when our rd signs are miles per hr , maybe I’m just an old git ,, cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧
Mary is always chirpy. 😂😀
My main ride is a 1994 Dawes Galaxy bought new, must try the Sustrans route to Newark from Lincoln.
Great bikes for sure. You'll enjoy the Sustrans route
Aww hi Mary ! Met her on the hill up to cafe allez at the castle on her recumbent enjoy the ride !
Hello there! 🙂
@@pezzie1972 hey me dear. I wasn’t as chirpy at the top of that climb!
@@jaycee1736 it’s a big ‘un that’s for sure. Fortunately Cafe Allez drives me forward! 😁
Mary is often spotted at Cafe Allez! 😂🚲👍👀
@@PaulGreenVlog cheeky! 😂😋
Looks very similar to my Super Galaxy, it’s even the same colour, but mine has slightly different graphics. Mine is from 2009.
I don’t know how old it is, it would be interesting to find out though! 🙂
I think it's the sort of bike you'll have for years! 😊
Mary for prime minister!
She would have some great cake parties!
When I started cycling again after my partners death, I got a super galaxy about 3 yeas ago, I was disappointed with it compared to the one I had in the 80s with Reynolds 531, double butted frame and forks.
This has a 531 badge on it, have no idea what it is but it’s there 😂
@@pezzie1972 531 tubing is a higher quality steel, and need care when building a frame, must be hand brazed, that's why it's was used for the better quality bikes, if it has 531 forks as well as frame, you can see the bottom of the forks vibrate a bit, absorbing some of the uneven surface of the road. The last few models used 520 tubing which can be tig welded , which doesn't need as much skill to get a good joint
@@FENCYCLIST aha ty for that 🙂
Steel is great to tide 😊👍🚲
@@PaulGreenVlog yes I'm not a fan of plastic (carbon fibre) bikes, steel is virtually indestructible. And easily repairable with a brazing of welding torch.
Now my Dad - a Witham Wheeler in his youth, and of course a second generation Raleigh dealer out of the shop on Wharf Road - had an adage about Lincs/Notts cycling. He used to say it was the only place he knew where you got headwinds both ways…
I think he may be correct about those headwinds.!
Hi Paul, nice video thank. Can I as what the connection with Dunshaughlin CC is?
Hi Sean, it's amazing how many comments I get wearing that Jersey! When I had my cycle cafe I had our own kit, and I used Spin11 to make them - great quality. Spin11 make for loads of Irish teams and clubs and the shirt was one they sent me as a sample for quality and size. I really like the colours - it's bright without being dayglo and really comfortable to wear...... 😊👍🔆
@@PaulGreenVlog Just getting to reading your reply now Paul. Nice story, thanks for the update.
I have just bought the exact same bike but it has lost its Reynolds tubing sticker. What steel tubing is your super Galaxy made from.
Hi Bob. 531 I believe
@@PaulGreenVlog Thanks.
Hi, I'm a born-again aging hippie cyclist who's read that the Dawes Galaxy might have been the definitive touring bike: odd that they stopped making it...Do you know what year Mary's was made in, and is there really such a huge difference in feel in steel vs ally? I've got an ally Giant Cypress and never found it too harsh a ride. Cheers for the vid.
Hi..... I'm not sure what year Mary's bike is... Will see if i can find out. When i have ridden a steel bike they have always felt comfortable and 'solid'..... But personally I think there are equal pros and cons 😀🤔
Is your shirt legal in the UK 😂😂😂
It is!
