How The $1 Trillion Green Bond Market Works

- So-called green bonds have become more popular in recent years, and this fast-growing segment of the $128.3 trillion global bond market could grow even more.
When an issuer sells a green bond, they’re making a nonbinding commitment to earmark the sale’s proceeds for environmentally friendly projects. That could include renewable energy projects, constructing energy efficient buildings or making investments in clean water or transportation.
Green bonds fall under the wider umbrella of sustainable bonds, which include fixed-income instruments whose proceeds are set aside for social or sustainability projects.
Big household names such as Apple and PepsiCo are diving into this space. A handful of massive banks and governments around the world are also issuing sustainable bonds, including China, Russia and the European Union.
This may be contributing to the space’s rapid growth. A report from Moody’s said new sustainable bond issuance may top $650 billion in 2021. That would represent a 32% jump from 2020.

“Non-binding and voluntary commitment” to use them for a “green” investment. If it’s non-binding to be strictly used for “green” projects why call them green bonds?? The whole video just became irrelevant.
The incentive is not in a legal contract but rather in reporting requirements and external evaluations (they talk about all of this a bit later in the video).

Given that Gen Y and Gen Z maintain the importance of climate change and sustainability in mind, the fact that we are in the midst of one of the greatest transfer of generational wealth in US history, and the presumed idea of a maturing society, how likely is it that we will keep investing in bonds like these? We need more accountability, not more money - in my opinion of course (:

Question: Green bonds, (or any bonds for that matter), where does the money come from to pay the interest when paying back those bonds? In other words, if the bonds aren't being invested in a way to generate money, (enough to cover the 'principal and interest'), then where does the money come from to pay back the bonds with interest?
And if it is a Government agency issuing bonds, and those bonds don't generate enough investment revenue, then the tax payer's get potentially screwed having to pay taxes on the 'principal and interest' for those bonds. (And the tax payer's might not have had a say in the issuance of those bonds, of which, taxation without representation).

What if bonds just replace stocks? Nowadays stocks are based on perceived value- not actual returns or dividends. What if future bond buys and sells are based on their perceived value separate from the yields- but a company’s “green” projects - and the quality of its green marketing communication department& its actual balance sheet? The ones that will survive this market unfortunately will not the SMEs... but the Microsoft, Amazons, GEs etc #climatepledge
@@bcaominh With stocks (or bonds from a business), one might be investing in a business that might make a profit, of which might pay dividends. Might not too. With bonds though, especially government bonds, green or otherwise, where does the money come from to pay back the 'principal and interest' to the bond holder? If the government did not make money from the bonds by investing it wisely, (so as to cover the 'principal and interest' of the bond when it comes time to buy back the bond), then it would seem the tax payers could get screwed over, yet again. And the tax payers might not have even had a choice as to whether government bonds get issued or not. (Taxation without representation).

It sounds like wall street is using them to offer low interest loans and hiding interest hikes in sustainability targets.
Also often these projects can be much less green than you'd expect. I've heard of adding natural gas to a coal plant considered a Green project because it lowers CO2, but it's still financing a coal plant. It's a lot of marketing and green washing.
Except that it really isn't "green"...

I am glad "green", "social", and "sustainability" criteria are increasingly being cited in global financing. Hopefully we rapidly escalate our transition to our circular Cradle to Cradle Certified economy powered by renewably powered electricity.
@FISH GREESE What does that even mean? My 108 year old house now has high insulation which lowers the amount of heating and cooling energy required allowing me to transition to renewably powered electricity. I am aiming for R80 attic, R30 walls and R35 floor.
