  • Proof that from gen 2 engines onwards the 1uz is an interference engine.
    The Cartune Company (2003) Ltd in New Zealand does 1uz and 3uz conversions / parts and wiring. We have been working on UZ Toyota V8 engines since 2004 when we did our own Hiace van to transport dirtbikes around NZ. Since then we have swapped to doing mainly just Lexus V8 work from a family owned farm hidden away in our paradise , surrounded by the NZ native bush. We sell parts and simple to follow wiring instructions for the 1uzfe engines. For enquiries email info@thecartunecompany.co.nz Take Care. Kelvin

    Kentucky Boy here 🤠 .. I've personally snapped timing belts in a 5m Supra (82-85) , a 7m Supra (86.5-92) ,, and , 2 sc400's , one 92 & one 94 , no engine damage whatsoever , love my Toyota's !! Driving a 97 sc400 now (light rods) , & guess what ? Just installed a new OEM timing belt , that crap isn't happening to me lol.. Hope everyone is having a great weekend 👍

    Kelvin...im a lucky bastard for sure....a year ago we went round and round on changing a belt.WP, TB, Starter, injectors....etc..(non-Toyota belt)....was the issue I was sent a 91 tooth belt... never started....tird for three days...thinkin it was cam sensors... got a OEM belt toyota part. Reinstalled and ya know what that takes .... installed and it has 8K miles since....purrs like a kitten. One lucky bastard signing off..

    Mr. Kelvin, always love seeing your amazing knowledge of these engines through your videos! REALLY contemplating wanting to put a UZ engine into my 1977 Chevy Camaro, but have a few questions and thoughts. I don't have Facebook, which seems to be your more prominent form of advertising beyond CZcams. Is there a link to a website as far as pricing for parts, pieces and services that you offer? Maybe an email address or a better form of asking in depth questions for sorting options? I currently have Qty. 3 early Gen 1 engines at my disposal, along with a 4wd/awd 2UZ 4Runner, and quite a few ideas that really need some extra knowledge to sort through possibilities!

    Literally there isn’t a Toyota publishing copy wrightpiece of literature that disagrees with you . First gen 1uz was always listed as a non-interference engine. The only other possibility is that first gen you have with the 1st gen rods and gen 2 pistons. I’ve been researching this setup for a while and it seems that unless you have .500 lift Kelford or similar aftermarket camshafts it WILL become interference. Only option at that point is to fly cut new valve reliefs, thus lowering the chance of bent valves but decreases compression .
    It’s amazing the utmost gall of people trying to reverse the well known . It’s all for views and arguments.
    Well made video once again. 🤙🏼

      Thanks. This engine is 100% a gen 2 engine. Ive checked it underneath when I had the sump off. Its just got a gen 1 intake for wiring as, if you noticed old yellow isn't presently in the workshop. You are correct, toyota has had this info around since 1994 but guys still dont get it right. We are doing a gen 2 piston, gen 1 rebuild soon. Cheers

      @@CartuneNZ Well I am following with enthusiasm. We are looking at a 1uz engine build for our Plymouth Duster. I found a ‘94 LS400 that I am picking up in a week or so. Hopefully the center/mid sump fits .
      We will be dropping my in some cams for a little lope but otherwise cleaned up, new bearings, rings , mls Cometic gaskets and HD fasteners. Maybe Prius COPs and a turbo down the road. Kelvin, is there any of the factory ECU’s that can be tuned ?

    Thanks for the info. I think the confusion comes specifically from the 95 sc400. I got one with gen 2 visual stuff on top (Ignition coil), but i turned it over a couple of times without the timing belt and the valves didnt touch the pistons at all. Dont know what they did with that year.

    • @CartuneNZ
      @CartuneNZ  Před 2 lety +8

      Correct. There are sub models of sc400 with the heavier rods which run later than 94, and there is the factory mismatch as you mentioned. Ive seen it myself, confirmed factory numbers. I'll do a video on rods and pistons at a later date.

I tried tuning into your video around the 1.15 minute mark where you mentioned the coil facing up and a few other distinguishing features of the gen 1, mine looks identical. Can you swap heavy pistons into a light piston engine?
    I have a 1uz from every generation I want to do some extensive work and experiments with these. The small block design is what draws me in the most. Very modern for it's time and capable with competing with new.

    Nobody has done (well I can't find knowledge on it) a 1uz bottom with a 3uz top in a gen 6 camry(2007/2008 camry sportivo)... do you have knowledge on whether this can be done? I've pressumed it might be too tall but I can't find anything on it on the interballs.
    So basically whether you say yay or nay pretty much decides the future of my ckc build (commy killing camry). If not then could you recommend an engine that will fit and dear God don't say a fricken 2gr because that's been done so much it's been beaten in to the ground.

      Sure, using a set of custom pistons might do it if they have suitable valve pockets, however you will also likely lose performance

    So Kelvin are 2UZFE's interference engines?

    • @CartuneNZ
      @CartuneNZ  Před 2 lety +1

      The 2uz shares a very similar head and piston design as the vvti engines, the early 2uz same head style without the vvti and later 2uz vvti and all have the ability to clash valves to pistons if belt is not connected. Interferance for 2uz.
