    This exercise done in this way, really exposes how painfully weak my triceps are. I can only do 2 reps with 40 lbs dumbells… This must explain why my flat presses are so weak…I wonder..

    This is awesome because my elbows hurt when I do lying tricep extensions with the cambered bar ..I also find myself starting to stall out just before the lock out on the overhead press where the triceps takes over from the shoulders awesome video

    Blows up the triceps--All the damn time, too! Compound press, followed by Rolling Dumbbell Extensions--guaranteed.

    That is a great exercise, and you've explained it very well.
    I also like Rippetoe's instructions; he says that to perform it correctly you have to envision that you're _throwing_ the weight when performing the extension.

    Gotta try these today, since I can't do barbell skullcrushers/french press. It just rips my elbows in a bad way, no matter how much I warm up or play with the technique.

  • @CaptJackAubreyOfTheRoyalNavy

    These gave me crazy triceps DOMS the next day like I haven't gotten in a long time. And this is despite doing lots of dips and presses for a while.

    • @BarbellLogic
      @BarbellLogic  Před 2 lety

      Hmm, might take them conservative the first time, but soreness tends to happen when you introduce new movements, especially with higher volume.
      Thanks for commenting.

    • @CaptJackAubreyOfTheRoyalNavy
      @CaptJackAubreyOfTheRoyalNavy Před 2 lety +2

      @@BarbellLogic Thanks for the reply. No complaints here about the DOMS. I know they're not necessarily "good," or a sign of progress, but they do let you know you hit the target muscle. And these definitely did that. Yeah, I think I did take it pretty conservative the first time. Only 20 lb dumbbells for about 3x10. But I haven't done any triceps isolation exercises in a long time; I've just been doing compounds for quite a while. But I wanted to add in a triceps isolation exercise to my routine, which is how I ended up here. I also went pretty slow on the eccentric, which probably contributed a lot to the DOMS.

    Is DB the best for this? I’ve been doing this roll movement with a straight bar, or EZ bar and found it effective.

    • @BarbellLogic
      @BarbellLogic  Před 9 měsíci

      Either one is great. There is no perfect or best triceps move. Do one with EZ curl bar for a bit, then do this with DBs for awhile.

    Wow, was looking for a replacement for the lying tricep extension with a barbell as I hit my head pretty hard with the bar and thought dumbells would be terrible as they would have too much side to side motion. This makes a ton of sense! Any advice on how to overload? My gym has only 5lb increments of dumbells. I was thinking I could work from 3x5 to 3x10 and then increase the weight

    • @ReynoldsStrong1
      @ReynoldsStrong1 Před 5 lety +3

      That's exactly right. I'd go from 3x6 to 3x12, then bump the weight up.

  • @AngeloPerez23983
    @AngeloPerez23983 Před 3 lety +2

    Is there a risk to overly engaging the shoulders here? If so, how do you avoid?

    • @BarbellLogic
      @BarbellLogic  Před 3 lety +3

      The big thing is to separate the shoulder and elbow movements. For the descent--elbows, shoulders. Ascent--shoulders, elbows. Separate those and you won't have a problem.
