      Wow! Best of luck with the project. It's great when an old car can bring us closer to loved ones. My F100 is kind of that way for me! I'm sure you'll put the loving care into it that it deserves.

    I am an old mechanic, now 74. Watch out that a wire brush on a right angle grinder does not get near your pants. I removed my first engine and over hauled at 15 years old, before I got my license to drive. Going today to help a friend that has a gear oil leak after installing a 4 speed manual transmission to replace the 3 speed.

    You should change the seal where the shifter exits the trans. It is a very common leak and the seal is not hard to change. Love the progress, keep it up!

      I guess i forgot to put it in the video, but I did end up doing that one!

      I don’t remember if you said or not but your diff is a 64. You can tell by the dip stick and the pad on the bottom for a transverse spring.

      @@spyderman1964 Yup, got it. Someone had written 64 on the side of it as well.

    Looking good. Now I’m waiting for the next Corvair video.

    I’ve spent the last 4 days dealing with a broken head stud on my 64 Corvair doing the exact steps you’ve taken in trying to remove the remainder. Waiting on a Timesert kit from Clark’s. Hope it works. Incredibly frustrating part of restoration work.

      Except I also broke off an EZ out and had to drill that out too. I’m glad y’all didn’t try to force it on the EZ out. 😊

      Head stud broke off in the crankcase? That's a miserable job! At least you can get the case hot.

    You guys do nice work. FYI that is a ‘64 not a ‘63. Note the cut out on the bottom for the transverse leaf spring (‘64 only).

    • @SealedBeamRallyTeam
      @SealedBeamRallyTeam  Před rokem +1

      Thank you. I'm aware of the diff being a 64. Not sure on the trans, but that's a 3.27. Car is a 63. Not complaining on that upgrade! Easier to swap to 64 rear end stuff later if I decide to.

    DId you take any pictures of the stamping on the transaxle showing the code for a "posi" and gear ratio? Also where is it and can I see while it is still in the car? I got ahead of myself and saw that you did. I 'd want to get a 1964 rear with a camber compensator and a posi rear for my '63. And I need to check my transaxle and see what I have but I need to know where to look. Driver or Pass side.
    Thanks Tyler

      @SealedBeamRallyTeam  Před 3 měsíci

      I believe it's on the pass side, low. Clarks catalog has the cheat sheet and info for the GM axle/trans codes. Available on their website! They also have cheat sheets on the engine varieties and whatnot

    • @SealedBeamRallyTeam
      @SealedBeamRallyTeam  Před 3 měsíci

      Mine is a '64 posi with the 3.27 gearing. 64 diffs have the compensator bolt holes on the bottom, which I'll probably use to mount my skid plate.

    That cleanup would be a lot easier with a power washer.

    Thank you for documenting the proof that penetrating oil, heat, welded nuts, and easy-outs often DO NOT WORK! Sorry you had to be the person to "take one for the team" but this is living proof that it OFTEN is ineffective. I concur with your work-around even if some may say, "That's not the way GM did it!" Two favorite movies from my childhood that showed there are OTHER ways to get the job done; the original "Flight of the Phoenix" (building a single engine plane out of a dual engine plane) and "Airport" when George Kennedy (Mr. Pertroni) got the stuck plane out of the snow by "throwing away the book."

    • @SealedBeamRallyTeam
      @SealedBeamRallyTeam  Před rokem

      I guess I didn't record it, but I did get a stuck nut/fitting off the clutch linkage last week. Had to get the thing literally red hot! I think if I could have gotten the trans case up to 700° F AND had a welded nut, it probably would have worked. But with a 700° transmission, I'd have different problems!

    Your dad's cousin Gary would be your first cousin once removed. Gary's kids, if he has any, would be your second cousins. Confuses me every time, and I've got four first cousins once removed on my mom's side, and over a dozen second cousins, hah!
