  • Hi,
    first I'd like to point out the obvious: I am not an expert.
    Maybe some of the features I was missing do exist but I did not find them.
    Maybe I was using the devices in a wrong way.
    So beware that this video reflects only my user experience and the limitations I have faced may not exist :)
    This video compares how the Kobo Aura H2O and the Pocketbook Inkpad handle scientific PDFs.
    On the Kobo Aura H20, both the standard Kobo PDF client and Koreader (github.com/koreader/koreader) are used.
    Sorry for the numerous English mistakes!
    I do hear them now and I feel bad about it.
    It seems I'm really not good at multitasking.
    take care!

    Thank you. Finally someone presented the capabilities of Koreader instead of saying "such and such device can't handle pdf and djvu books in physics and mathematics". With Koreader even a humble Kobo Mini with 5" can be used for reading scientific books comfortably. Btw, concerning the way the screen is "level" with the edge --- you say "I don't care", but actually it does make a bit of a difference. Namely, when you use a device for a long time the dirt/dust accumulates around the edges of the screen and on other devices (which are not level) it is impossible to take it out. But on those devices like Kobo Aura One where it is level it is a simple matter of wiping it off with a cotton pad and distilled water.

    Thank you so much for making this video. I'm a med school student in Limoges and we read with a lot of diagrams... I think I'll settle with the Pocketbook Inkpad because I will be able to read docs and maybe use Google drive with it.
    Anyway it helps so much to have PDF comparison for scientific documents.

    The marks that confuse column detection (~17 minutes into the video) are printer's 'crop marks'. PDFs with these marks are normally intended to be sent to a commercial book printer. (I have seen people inadvertently add them selecting the wrong (La)TeX page style.)
    To allow making a book or magazine with printed areas (images or text) going right to the paper edge, printing stock is larger than the size of the final product. On this excess area printers also place color lignment marks, etc. The excess area is normally cut off after binding the pages, making a uniform page size. The crop marks indicate where to cut.

    Hi Steven! Thanks for this video, very informatic (and funny actually). I have to H2O and I was also very disappointed with the way it handles pdfs. Koreader made it a lot better, but now I sometimes have lines that are too high or too low, which makes them unreadable. Did you ever encounter this? It seems like the device 'thinks' the screen is a bit larger than it actually it. I already tried settings the margins to large and increased the margin sizes in advanced settings but that didn't help.

    Thanks for the video. There don't seem to be any other reviews covering sci papers, so it is very helpful.
    At 7:20 you mention that you lose zoom alignment when moving to the next page. I think that Kindle maintains the zoom position between pages.

    • @liwerd1016
      @liwerd1016 Před 3 lety

      Does Kindle (paperwhite or something) has "no scrolling" option, when PDF file is in zoomed in mode, I mean when you don't scroll, but turn on like pages, but one A4 page becomes 4 smaller pages? This option means a lot for me, and honestly I can't choose between Kobo and Kindle now. This option was in my old reader, and I need it when choosing a knew one.

    Both devices seem to be first of their class for the specific companies. Koreaders PDF capabilities seem excellent. I learned, that Koreader can also be used on a Kindle (Paperwhite). The Paperwhite has a little smaller screen (6" compared to 6.8") than the Kobo Aura H20, but is quite a bit cheaper. **What about aquiring the Kindle and use Koreader with it mainly for scientific pdf?**

    • @TigranAivazian
      @TigranAivazian Před 6 lety

      Kindles are inferior because their local storage is fixed and cannot be upgraded. Kobo Aura H2O (and HD) enjoy a maximum storage of 512GB (yes, half a terabyte!) because you can upgrade the internal storage to 256GB and put another 256GB micro sd to the external slot. This would allow you to store a considerable library of planetary scale, i.e. you can carry the entire knowledge of mankind (actually readable) in your pocket.

    I already have Kobo Aura HD... but to be honest I am thinking of switching to Pocketbook Inkpad - will this be good idea ? I mainly read epub / mobi ( like 80% ) and .pdf ( mostly programming stuff ) like 20% ... also does PocketBook read .cbr ( comics ) ? Great video BTW !

    • @stevenchantal4298
      @stevenchantal4298  Před 9 lety +2

      Can't tell wether this would be a good idea or not. I think this is rather a matter of personal taste. I don't know if the Inkpad supports .cbr and I can't test it because I no longer have the Inkpad here. What I remember from previous reviews is that the Inkpad can struggle with big sized documents containing large images. Take care!

    Bonjour,
    Merci beaucoup pour votre video. J'ai justement pour objectif de me servir de la liseuse pour des cours de physique pdf en LateX , je viens d'acheter la Kobo Clara 6 pouces, j'ai transféré quelques pdf c'est une catastrophe, déjà ça freeze, quand je bouge le texte ça fait un écran noir avant de recadrer, elle ne s'éteint plus, bref elle aime pas le LateX ou les matrices de Dirac... Je pense que je vais l'échanger et passer à un autre modèle, j'ai vu qu'il y avait la Kobo libra qui était en 7 pouces et qui autorisait le mode paysage, pensez-vous qu'il est possible de lire des pdf en pleine page de ce genre en 7 pouces sans avoir à zoomer? J'imagine que koreader corrige déjà qques pb.
    Merci beaucoup par avance.

    • @PALbub
      @PALbub Před 8 lety +5

      hallo bilelim, das lesen von pdfs ist für meine augen deutlich weniger anstrengend, als am pc (normaler 60hz monitor) oder am tablett. allerdings machen nur pdfs spaß, die pro seite nur einen block text haben. für jede pdf kann man sich eine optimale zoomstufe einstellen, die fest für diese pdf gespeichert wird und dann die ungenutzen ränder abschneidet. das blättern klappt auch deutlich schneller, als bei all den anderen ebooks, die ich getestet habe. trotzdem ist ein tablett sehr viel schneller, das muss man auch bedenken. die ganz neue generation der kindle ebook reader habe ich allerdings noch nicht in den fingern gehabt.
      die dropbox anbindung finde ich sehr gut, so lade ich mir die pdfs in meinen speziellen ordner und habe sie nach dem abgleichen auch gleich auf dem ebook reader.
      für mich der beste ebook reader. trotzdem ist die ebook reader technik immernoch ein kompromiss aus leistung und lesbarkeit. am besten selbst austesten mit eigenen pdfs. große pdfs mit viel bildern und grafiken brauchen manchmal deutlich länger zu laden. da lohnt sich das konvertieren in einen niedrigeren qualitätsstandart oft deutlich. zb habe ich den truckenbrodt (aerodynamik bibel) von 100 auf 20 mb verkleinert - durch qualitätsreduktion. nun läd er mehrfach so schnell und ich sehe trotzdem keinen unterschied.
      zusammengefasst: die qualität der pdfs ist entscheidend. eingescannte seiten sind das denkbar schlechteste. geht aber auch, dauert nur etwas.
      ich habe jetzt einfach alles so runtergeschrieben, wie es mir eingefallen ist. ich bitte die fehlende struktur zu entschuldigen.
      viel spass mit oder ohne dem ebook reader ;)
      lg
      phil

      Good work! There's a thing i've figured out, for when you're reading pdf's that have somewhat crooked columns in them, that go slightly diagonally. You can slightly reduce the magnification by editing readerzooming.lua with any text editor at this part near the end:
      elseif self.zoom_mode == "column" then
      zoom = zoom_w * 2
      And change number 2 to something smaller, like 1.8 or 1.9
