I was looking for the "skip this ad" button at the bottom right but it wasn't there.
hahaha
Hahaha... same here. :D
yeah same
Same here !
hahah same did I
you should say : this is a kindle commercial.
Excellent Video clip! Sorry for butting in, I would love your thoughts. Have you thought about - Tarbbatigan ebook master Tip (google it)? It is a great exclusive product for learning how to create an ebook without the normal expense. Ive heard some super things about it and my mate after a lifetime of fighting got great results with it.
Is this a kindle commercial?
+Ferr Angelus Suaberon "make moral decisions all you want, but...". yeah... it seems so.
Yeah, i feel the urge to punch that guy in the face
"Before you even pick a device you're going to have to pick a company." - Really? Is that how I'm supposed to decide what I want to buy? I'm supposed to buy from a company that "is at war with publishers"? Who gave this video all those thumbs up?
He seems to make a solid point if you ask me... He basically states the exact conclusion I have came to while deciding upon an upgrade for my Kindle. To be fair, Kobo seems to offer great hardware, but having already invested a bit in books on my Kindle, I may be slightly bias towards Amazon's offering. If I'd want to just download the books from torrents and let them on a device, I'd probably go with the Kobo H2O.
Gerald Tunks I think it's a valid one, as ecosystem is what all that matters, unless you plan to side load books from pirate sources
Every 60 seconds a minute passes in Africa please spread the word.
Wtf? 😂
Omg 😂
OMG THIS IS TRAGICCCCCCCCCC
Really? 😞 how long they’ve been suffering
Is that you Bono...?
I'm on the Verge of getting an E-Reader.
:D And did you get one eventually?
I see what u did there😂
I seriously gotta start back my reading habits. its been like a year since i bought a book. maybe its time to change over to an e-reader
Ruben BFM getting a kindle really turned me back on to reading. i was finishing up book 1 of the game of thrones books and about to take a long flight so i bought a refurb kindle keyboard (i think it's the 3rd gen) and i have read so much as a result. obviously i wasn't going to bring 2 500+ page books on the plane with me so the kindle allowed me to finish book 1 and start with book 2.
but beyond the weight benefits, i find myself using it all the time. there are months when i don't use it but then i inevitably pick it up again and start reading and can't put it down. i also find it makes me sneak a few pages here and there on the kindle app on my phone which syncs nicely with my kindle.
It's been awhile since your post ... but an e-reader is really a great aid ... I have a paperwhite (and LOVE IT) ... I've had a kindle since the very first one ... but the paperwhite is the best ...
Yes, I started on my ipad but it doesn't work so well... my Kindle got me from 0 books in 10 months up to 10 books in the last 2 months. Now on my second Robin Hobb trilogy (900 pages per book).
Who else is a born pirate?
10,000 books. Calibre convert to azw3 and then maybe edit if it ends up with margins down the left side... Arrrrr.
Argh me harties!
literally what i was thinking the whole video
I have the cheapest Kindle. Besides not being able to read in the dark, it's pretty good to me. I don't know why he scoffs at the resolution. Looks totally fine.
+LazyScoutJace
Pampered by the Paperwhite and Voyage, I reckon. There really is an appreciable difference.
When you feel like upgrading, do yourself a favor and get an ereader with a 300ppi screen. Books, graphics on product packaging, posters, etc are all printed at 300ppi, sometimes more, but 300ppi is the standard. Get one with a frontlight as well, those are really handy. I remember spending years trying to refine a technique for using the lamp in my room to read comfortably, but I never did. Now, I don't even have to worry about it anymore, and the fact that it's a frontlight makes it super easy on the eyes.
Happy reading!
+Scroogsy I have no intention to upgrade any time soon. I'm happy with my small kindle as is. :)
You don't notice until you compare them both side to side,, higher res ones are def easier on the eyes ;-)
Are you really trying to say that a ereader that doesn't support .epub is the best ereader?
No, you cant. DRM-issues.
Use calibre.
Calibre is not converting Books with DRM. Unless, you go illegal ways.
+Janari You can remove DRM with tools/calibre plugins. Are they illegal? Maybe. Do I care? No. DRM is cancer and should be treated as such. As long as you buy the ebook and don't share it with others I doubt anyone will care.
I think it's super obnoxious to have to convert all my stuff to pdf but I may just do it. Epub is super common, and there is a ridiculous amount of stuff legally in the public domain that is in .epub format.
Calibre is the great equalizer. It frees me from the Amazon "ecosystem" and allows me to read any book on any reader for as long as I want. I got the Kindle Voyage when it first came out, and I just ordered the new Kindle Oasis for its warm light and bigger screen. I feel that these two readers are still the best for my particular needs.
heavens, I do no like being conned, this is a commercial with the wrong recommendation
I agree. I usually would recommend Kobo, PocketBook, Likebook, or Boox, but not Kindle, in light of Amazon reportedly mistreating their workers in their physical item business, but also with me leaving my original Paperwhite in a drawer for many months before selling it off back in 2015.
I used to be a kindle fan before I realised how restricted the format was. With kindles you're using a proprietary file format, which basically means you're limited to using Amazon hardware and Amazon apps to read a book with.
Every other e-reader and most public libraries (especially outside of the US) use the epub format. So you can buy an eBook at the best price from any store and you know it's going to be compatible with your device (just like with MP3s).
Unfortunately, while it makes sense to buy books from different stores if you're using a tablet, it's not so easy if you're using an e-reader. If you want to buy a book over WiFi you're locked into one particular store and you need to use a USB connection to download books otherwise.
This is why I say, for the most painless and versatile reading... Just use a tablet. It'll be one less device to pay for and you get the added benefit of instant free books from your local overdrive library. They're also quite well priced too. The Asus memo pad 7 (recommended by The Verge) and the Google nexus 7 are both available for around £129 which is similar to what you'd pay for a kindle.
So here it is:
If you're an apple type of person and don't mind paying for an all-in-one experience at the cost of freedom then go ahead, get a kindle.
Otherwise, if you want pure versatility you're better off with a tablet. (Especially if you like to pirate ebooks!) The kobo devices are great but the store is expensive. The nook devices are crap but the store is well priced. Meanwhile the Google play store is beats Amazon on titles and prices and you can also use it with any android tablet you like.
Hope this helps.
thank you for this! i’ve been looking into e-readers and wondering which one would be the best, but i didn’t know they didn’t support the .epub format! i’ll look into tablets instead then
this was a lot of help in making a decision so thank you! :)
@@ceemays same here. The only thing that still makes me look for an e-reader is the eye draining with tablet usage...
By far the best and most detailed comment about e e-readers...
"More books to read on Amazon"That assumes that I want to buy books or that I might be interested in supporting Amazon. I'm not. I read a minimum of 100 books a year, and cannot afford to buy every one of them. I mostly download books from the library (I am a member of two) and sometimes from Gutenberg Press. I would like to remind watchers that you can use libraries to meet a large part of your reading needs and use the money you save to buy the e-reader which supports both the Overdrive and Libby app and PDfs. Now, you may be wondering because that was not even discussed, which e-reader is that?
Thank you! After seeing this, I decided to buy a Paperwhite. I'm very happy with it. Took a few days to get used to the touch screen sensitivity after the Keyboard Kindle! I decided against the 3G model, as when I estimated how many books I'd probably be able to buy with the difference in price between them, and how little wifi that would probably take to download them, the 3G free wifi didn't seem so free anymore! And I agree, the Voyage is just too expensive compared with the features in the Paperwhite. So thank you for making the choices very clear!
"buying books"
@@ngogercin arrrrrg ;)
Who even buys ebooks nowadays? If you have the knowledge and access to the internet, you can find this priced ebooks for free with just a few clicks.
I personally own a basic kindle and am in love with it. Why would you dis a kindle with such a great price. You said the screen was inferior? Why would you say it's inferior when the screen works great and that's all you need for a great read. Did you know that when you read something with a higher resolution you may seem to enjoy the experience but it actually strains your eyes and may have detrimental effects to your eyes in the long run. Don't disregard the kindle basic just because you think you own something more superior. And I swear to God you were probably paid by amazon to make this video.
A big advantage for me is the possibility to download all types of ebooks from many different online shops and push them directly to for example a kobo e-reader.
In the case of a kindle e-reader you've to struggle with the format etc..
I love this, I don't have to look at multiple reviews of products and be overwhelmed I can just hear what I wana hear and the video quality was amazing 10/10 im going with the paper white
Thank you so much. I was extremely confused as to what to buy as there are so many options. You clarified all of my questions and your video was very easy to understand and explicit. I couldn't make up my mind if I wanted a reading device or another type of device. You helped me make up my mind.
"The battery lasts 2 months" wtf?!
Hey guys I've not checked on verge since the nexus 9 review but I decided to give then another shot so can anyone tell me if they are still iverge?
Excellent! Clear and crisp points on the Paperwhite.
I just loved it!!
Can you download books from Kobo to Kindle Paperwhite if you are wanting to switch from Kobo to Kindle?
Hi. I wanna ask. What do you when your ereader's storage gets full?
I read a lot of scientific journals in pdf format. Does anyone know if e-readers would be good for that?
what would you say about onyx boox afterglow 2? it runs android so you are free to use epub files and install whatever reading app you want... is there a difference between the kindle app and having a kindle device?
Extremely helpful video, thanks
i have a samsung nook. should i have bought a kindle?
your next video should be "the best gaming laptops you can buy".
Ok, can Kindle be uses to hand written notes with a styus pen?
which item i could read my personal files of epub and pdf??
Great review - simple, to the point, no fluffy time wasting waffle. Thank you.
I have a kindle Paperwhite for reading and a nexus 7 as my tablet.
Kobo has more formats. Yes, that could be right but with Calibre that doesn´t matter at all. I have transformed Epub, pdf and docs easily and sent them to my kindle without any issues. At least for me, I love my kindle paperwhite, it´s my first e-reader and it´s making me read a lot more than I was reading in the past few years.
Hello everyone..Can you Help me choose an e-reader which is best handling pdf docs.Thankyou
love your videos please dont ever stop doing these they are so helpful for me
clear and concise...loved your review and comparison
this is like a kindle add. I own paperwhite already and feel like buying one again! :D :D
In 2019: The Kobo Clara HD is the best choice: Same price as Kindle Paperwhite. Same 6" 300ppi screen. No ads. Overdrive integration for checking out library books directly from your e-reader. Adjustable color temperature on the backlight for nighttime reading. It is the winner in every single category except for *buying* books and in that it is not waterproof while the new Paperwhite is.
Been considering getting an e-reader because ever since I upgraded my iPad Air 2 to an iPad Pro 12.9 I haven't finished a single book, it's just way too big to read books on... Need an e-reader that I can port the books I've already bought on iBooks/elsewhere to it, will the kindle let me do that?
Thanks bud. Huge help in my search for an e-reader.
Do some of you use an e-reader for scripts?
I have a lot of scripts for university. All available in PDF format. As I study computer engineering it is mostly text/schematics/tables.. Any tips?
I already tried to learn with tablet or Laptop. But I don't like staring on a normal lcd screen for hours..
what about (the very universal format) ePub support for the kindle? Yeah, no support on that one. Kobo it is.
I bought a kindle 4th g a year ago and just recently I got an iPad mini. I thought I would sell the kindle but then I realized I can't let it go. I totally agree with the video.
This video was helpful! Thx
Here in Brazil we've the Saraiva's Lev and Saraiva's Lev com luz. I don't know if Saraiva do sell something in north america but here it is one of the most known bookstore and the marketing of Lev was incredable! It should be on the list or at least named.
Congratulations and keep this awesome quality!
I don't know if overdrive existed before this video, but imo kobo devices a superior because they allow you to access books for free from the public library near you. This means that although Amazon may have cheaper prices and more books, the kobo is by far the most cost effective device in the long run.
The Verge Could you do a This is My Next on laptops? Specifically just Windows ui and preferably Ultrabooks, there's too many to choose from.
I use this app called UB reader on my android phone to read ebooks. It can play both epub and pdf format.
I have both the nook touch and the kindle the kindle died after a software update. It was 1 month out of warranty. I contacted Amazon executive offices and they sent me an email stating that they would not replace it. I was a prime member and did a lot of shopping with them. I will never buy another nook because they simply do not stand behind their products. The nook is still going strong even though I purchased this 2 years before the kindle.
What's the name of the music in the background?
Bought a Kindle basic 2019 few weeks ago. Totally worth it. Best buy on a budget.
Didn't even mention the fact that Kobo Aura HD has a crazy hi screen resolution and looks like you are staring a news paper.
whats the first song in the background ?
Kobo is better if you have a bunch of ebooks already downloaded in a bunch of different formats. Or if you prefer to get your books from....less legal methods shall we say.....
Try the FREE app CALIBRE to convert ebook formats ...
Actually no. epub converts to azw3 easily in calibre (that enables you to use custom fonts and bold settings in the kindle).
My question is, if I buy the paperwhite can I download books as PDF files from torrent sites & be able to read it normally?
It depends on the pdf. Kindle devices don't have the best compatibility with PDFs.
Jon Smith its ok i can convert pdf to mobi format..
***** thank you, I didn't know that !
***** shhhhhhh.....
Ana Rita I know it's great, I'm currently using that.
I am a heavy user of video reviews and definitely this is the best one I've ever watched.
Can you do this is my next power bank for smartphone and another for laptop?
Thanks
Bought a Kindle Paperwhite recently, before this I was reading on my Samsung tablet. I am so happy with my Kindle. I absolutely love it. I dont even use my tablet any more. I use my phone and my Kindle. The only complaint that I have is that Kindle does lock you into the Kindle ecosystem. I have a few books on other formats that I would like in my Kindle library.
Thing is... You aren't at all "committing to an ecosystem" unless you ONLY use Kindle, and the only excuse for that is simply being uneducated... Most other ereaders give you much more control over how you use them. Hell, I rooted my Nook, and can run the Kindle and Kobo apps anyway, along with dozens of useful Android apps.
So with that in mind, look at the other features. The Kindle doesn't have waterproofing, doesn't have physical buttons, has a worse backlight than most of the competition. And you get freakin ADS on a piece of hardware that you supposedly own!
And your little point on selection and price: I would bet you my salary I can get every single book you get from Amazon for cheaper, using a source that benefits the author more than Amazon does.
dsid1127, yes, please answer the question posed by Corin. Even I'm eager to know. Shouldn't look uneducated before splashing the cash for the Kindle, you see.
i as well am interested in your opinion, please answer fast
Corin Osswald Uh, hard to say, like, buy it on the website of your favourite book-store, or like, ANY OTHER WEBSITE THAT'S NOT AMAZON?
I would recommend the tolino page or shine 2 HD, both solid and well-build, they even have access to their own free Wi-Fi hotspots, so, not judging you, but inform yourself before writing something offensive against someone who told his opinion.....
Thank you for that comparison. It help me make up my mind which one i want. i love books. but i can't carry around a lot of books. this way with the kindle paper. i can.
I stopped at "make moral decisions as you want to..." 2:03
I stopped at "Kobo and Amazon are the two companies that matter here, and you are gonna be buying from one of the two of them. ". - Seriously?
@@PeterPanayotovINS What else is there?
@@jordanquinley2471 Pocketbook. But the main problem in this statement for me is "...you are gonna be buying from one of the two of them." Why? There are so many other good options... And I prefer Pocketbook.
If you buy a kindle will downloading books cost money?
Very good review, thank you. Im definitely buying paperwhite
WHY IS THIS SERIES NOT GETTING UPLOADED ANYMORE??
Never trading in my nook for a kindle. Never.
E-Book Reader with advertisment and .epub issues. amazon lost one more customer with bringing in advertisment.
Now i have big trouble to get my books on my new reader because of .epub and DRM. I regret getting the kindle in the first place! Dont decide for Kindle, unless you want to go into the amazon dictatorship and get totaly depended on amazon, if you ever want to switch to another reader.
+Doug Beney No, removal of ads isn't free, the Amazon website describes how it works.
But I don't get people who complain about the ads - don't buy the ad version if you don't want ads, simple as that. How hard is it to read the product description before buying?
the fact you pay for something and get ads is ridiculous in my opinion.
***** You get ads for a cheaper price.
If you don't want that, pay a few bucks more(I mean a single ebook will often cost more than the difference) or just wait for the next big sale and get it even cheaper without ads.
What is indeed ridiculous is the amount of people expecting lower prices without any downsides. It's not like Amazon doesn't tell you upfront that the cheaper version has ads.
It's not their fault that so many people are stingy.
You can use Calibre to convert it into any format.
Sulfen I've played with the conversion tool a bit, some work ok while some turn out badly. For me, PDF to Epub or Amazon friendly formats greatly degrade the quality.
Anyone know the background track?
Top tip - buy a kindle with offers. Contact Amazon support and ask how to remove offers and they will do it for free.
Can anyone confirm this?
Didn't work, I think you just got lucky with either a nice person or a newbie who didn't know they were suppose to charge you.
can it open pdf downloaded ?
I'm waiting for the Onyx Boox E-Note with 10.3" e-ink screen on which one can also type text using a wireless bluetooth external keyboard with trackpad. That e-reader is expected to come out January 2018.
i have books ( PDF Documents ) on my laptop .....can i transfer it into the kindle and read it ....or i just can read amaZon books ...?
you can transfer and read
I just use my old Sony ereader no back light which is great as I don't like looking at back lit devices for hours I just sync ebooks from the laptop to it super fast.
Great video, thx.
I still prefer the Nook GlowLight...Why? File formats. It supports more formats than the Kindle and I really prefer the way the Nook feels in hand compared to the Kindle. In store support (as long as stores continue to exist) is nice too.
Same
I too own a Kindle and I should say its the best gadget I have ever bought. Totally agree with you.
I just got a nexus 7 a few days ago. Just get that for book reading plus more.
I don't buy a kindle because it doesn't support epub bit is this not big of a deal?
Thank you. Now I am confident to purchase Paperwhite.
I still prefer reading on my iPad. I'd rather keep the amount of devices I carry around to a minimum.
To anyone that is interested in the different kindles but are wanting to read epub books and other formats and have folders there is a project called duokan os. I have updated several of my kindles to that alternative os with great results! You are able to switch between the two operating systems easily. Also there are several kindle versions out there that you can easily pickup a used kindle 2 or 3 for less that $50 in great condition. I personally picked up a kindle 2 for $33 plus shipping on ebay and then installed my os on it and had a great ebook reader that if damaged I didn't have much in it. I had access to the amazon website through the original os on wifi or 3g to get books and other web sites through my computer to get books.
I use the kobo clara hd, the comfort light is so nice for reading in the dark
I like my Amazon Fire and its pretty great, color, and also if I finish the book I was reading or not I can just go onto Netflix so it's great (for me at least)
Great video. Agree 100%
Thank you, I have two paperwhites, one is wifi only, one is 3G with wifi, plus the kindle gen 2. The worst thing for me is the paperwhite with 3G, the battery wont charge, Amazon tells me it lasts 5 years, mine did not. I cannot buy a new battery, Amazon do not sell batteries, Amazon’s advice? But a new ereader. I am a pensioner, I spend a lot of my day reading, but I can’t afford to buy a new ereader each time I have a battery malfunction. There is a company in Texas which sells the batteries, maybe twenty or so dollars, postage is a lot, $50 but after placing my order they informed me that new shipping laws won’t let them ship to Australia. So...I am stuck with a device I love but cannot charge. I bought a Kobo years ago, but haven’t used it, I think I have three books on it, maybe it is time to use the Kobo. Thanks for the information, maybe I should stick to my iPad forget the paperwhites.
Could you make a video about the best tablet for comic books??
If you are Canadian I think Kobo is the better option because Kobo owns overdrive which is the digital ebook system that many of our public libraries use. You can't use a regular kindle with overdrive.
Oh my goodness, I totally agree!
Don't know about the Nook, but the Kobo is bugged to ****. Had 3 now and they all have the same problem of freezing totally ( and getting back to the page you were on after restarting it with a paperclip is next to impossible because of the stupid slider ), or turning 2 pages at once.
Paperwhite does seem to be the best. Though I'd like something with a bigger screen.
I just downloaded 27 FREE books to Kobo Aura H2O. I would say Kobo's not a bad deal in that respect.
I think the navigation is way better on a Kobo than kindle. Kobo are more tab oriented, so you can see more info on the same screen. Kindle has to load more pages to do anything, so it takes longer.
amazon paid you how much?
Can Kindle Paper white read .cbr files like Marvel comics in Colour? Plz I need aNsWeRs
I know my question will hurt other peoples heads but can the kindle paperwhite read pdf's too? all my books are in pdf in my laptop.
It can but the text will appear tiny. You can have it converted to mobi. BUT -- this closed ecosystem thing is something I do not like.
I've had Kindle 2, Kindle 3 and the Kindle Paperwhite. I really miss those page turning buttons, so am struggling with getting a voyage or not. I kept the previous ones until they broke...
I LOVE my page turning buttons on my Nook Simple Touch.
I so want a Kobo Mini but it's hard to find. I think more companies should think about pocketable e-readers as I'm usually not carrying a backpack all the time and want to carry my e-reader in my pocket.
I'm lovin the production value of this series keep it up!
The Paperwhite has terrible build quality, went through 3 before I got a decent backlight without huge patches, and 2 with bezel coming apart from the body at the bottom by the USB port.
That said, the Amazon ecosystem is far better than any other option, but even this is a moot point with applications like Calibre.
I just use moonreader on my phone. Carrying a kindle or a tablet around is too much of a hassle.
We need updated version of this video
I have rehular kindle yet it has built in lighting
