Scientific PDF/Books on Kobo Aura H2O and Pocketbook Inkpad
Hi,
first I'd like to point out the obvious: I am not an expert.
Maybe some of the features I was missing do exist but I did not find them.
Maybe I was using the devices in a wrong way.
So beware that this video reflects only my user experience and the limitations I have faced may not exist :)
This video compares how the Kobo Aura H2O and the Pocketbook Inkpad handle scientific PDFs.
On the Kobo Aura H20, both the standard Kobo PDF client and Koreader (github.com/koreader/koreader) are used.
Sorry for the numerous English mistakes!
I do hear them now and I feel bad about it.
It seems I'm really not good at multitasking.
take care!

Do you have any more recent videos comparing pocketbook and Kobo? I have pocketbook Touch HD 3 and wonder if installing Koreader would have any benefits for me. Note taking in Pocketbook is already quite smooth, but you now, just to not miss out on anything😁
Thanks for the great review! What about highlighting? Does any of the readers allow highlighting in PDFs?
The marks that confuse column detection (~17 minutes into the video) are printer's 'crop marks'. PDFs with these marks are normally intended to be sent to a commercial book printer. (I have seen people inadvertently add them selecting the wrong (La)TeX page style.) To allow making a book or magazine with printed areas (images or text) going right to the paper edge, printing stock is larger than the size of the final product. On this excess area printers also place color lignment marks, etc. The excess area is normally cut off after binding the pages, making a uniform page size. The crop marks indicate where to cut.
This is the video that I've been looking for. Thank you for making this!
Still relevant, thanks!
Very informative!
Thank you for making this video. Can anyone tell how good is Kindle for maths/scientific books?
The best for PDF textbooks is Onyx Boox 13" devices. Making notes on PDFs with a pen is great. Maybe other 13" devices are good es well. Everything smaller is not as fun.
What do you think about Kindle to read mathematics books?
Where did you get this cute frog rug????
Thank you!
Really clarifier, thanks mate ¡
Thank you. Finally someone presented the capabilities of Koreader instead of saying "such and such device can't handle pdf and djvu books in physics and mathematics". With Koreader even a humble Kobo Mini with 5" can be used for reading scientific books comfortably. Btw, concerning the way the screen is "level" with the edge --- you say "I don't care", but actually it does make a bit of a difference. Namely, when you use a device for a long time the dirt/dust accumulates around the edges of the screen and on other devices (which are not level) it is impossible to take it out. But on those devices like Kobo Aura One where it is level it is a simple matter of wiping it off with a cotton pad and distilled water.
It's too bad that Sony quit making e-readers. They were the best for PDF docs and books. They do make a dedicated PDF reader but it is very expensive. I have the Kobo H2O with KoReader and I still use my old Sony for PDFs.
Great video! I know it's old, but something tells me you sent back the pocketbook...!
Hi, thx for this comparaison. Do you have an over advice to read PDF on a ebook 2 years after ?
Lol, Kobo pdf reader "completely useless"
Not only Kobo's pdf reader is completely useless, but ALL commercial software is complete junk. Only an ignorant person would use commercial software when there is a free alternative available.
Kobo Aura h20 version 2 has just been released.
Is this ink pad 1 or 2?
So noone is going to mention his alien thumbs ?
Is it possible to make koreader as default app on ereader?
Yes, you just boot into KSM (not into nickel) and then touch "Start koreader" rather than touching any other area on the screen. Obviously you still need other KSM menu options (e.g. USB for usbnet communication with the device).
hi A short time ago I bought one but stopped for no particular reason When i put it in the charger lights up the play button once and then turns off
Thank you so much for making this video. I'm a med school student in Limoges and we read with a lot of diagrams... I think I'll settle with the Pocketbook Inkpad because I will be able to read docs and maybe use Google drive with it. Anyway it helps so much to have PDF comparison for scientific documents. Have a nice day
Hi Steven! Thanks for this video, very informatic (and funny actually). I have to H2O and I was also very disappointed with the way it handles pdfs. Koreader made it a lot better, but now I sometimes have lines that are too high or too low, which makes them unreadable. Did you ever encounter this? It seems like the device 'thinks' the screen is a bit larger than it actually it. I already tried settings the margins to large and increased the margin sizes in advanced settings but that didn't help.
Thanks a lot! It really helps me to make a choice.
Is the durability and longevity of KOBO AURA H2O good?
Yes, I have been using it practically every day for the past THREE YEARS. It still looks as new.
Please make a tutorial on how to install koreader

It's not "irreversible".... :D Hahaha, l'accent français qui fait mal aux oreilles. Pourquoi est-ce que l'on est aussi mauvais pour prononcer l'anglais ? Sinon, vidéo vraiment sympa, merci !
21:32 - this so saved my Kobo purchase. thanks.
Great comparison! Thanks for sharing.
wiyh calibre you can convert the pdf to kepub and read really well the pdfs files calibre-ebook.com/download
Not really. It won't work with serious pdf files (physics, mathematics, etc).
Are you a bass player?? a quick guess by looking your thumbs :) Great review by the way thank you
A brilliant and very informative review. Great work! Many thanks.
Both devices seem to be first of their class for the specific companies. Koreaders PDF capabilities seem excellent. I learned, that Koreader can also be used on a Kindle (Paperwhite). The Paperwhite has a little smaller screen (6" compared to 6.8") than the Kobo Aura H20, but is quite a bit cheaper. **What about aquiring the Kindle and use Koreader with it mainly for scientific pdf?**
Kindles are inferior because their local storage is fixed and cannot be upgraded. Kobo Aura H2O (and HD) enjoy a maximum storage of 512GB (yes, half a terabyte!) because you can upgrade the internal storage to 256GB and put another 256GB micro sd to the external slot. This would allow you to store a considerable library of planetary scale, i.e. you can carry the entire knowledge of mankind (actually readable) in your pocket.
Thank you for this useful review! Please inform me which device would you buy?
I bought a Kobo Aura H2O. Thanks to this video I discovered koreader; it is essential for reading scientific pdf books and it works like a charm! Also, I find it pretty good the original browser of the kobo. Thanks Steven for this review.
Does any one using koreader with Arabic or any other similar language?
Parece um francês falando inglês
Mas estou seguro que é Alemão
Suena a acento alemán probablemente de Suiza.
Thanks a lot for the very detailed review! Exactly what I wanted to know.
hey man, total newb to these and just bought the H20, and since i reached the end of your vid I am a lot happier than I was at the start; many thanks for a sterling presentation and a fast track to using my reader properly !!!
Is it possible to highlight text in the pdf's?
Great review! I am looking for a reader to read PDFs, this helped a lot!
What a wonderful video with pertinent and frank commentaries. Thanks!
Please how did you installed that pdf reader (koreader) to can use the landscape view???
....THANKS A LOT for this Video!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please tell me, what are your TOP 5 eReaders. (if possible also write a short keyword for each of them why it is in your top5) ....wo studierst du denn? die vielen formeln erinnern mich an mein elektrotechnik studium :-)
+juerhe1 Hallo, haben Sie Antwort bekommen? Ich würde gerade ebook kaufen (ich ahbe Kindle 6", Leider zu klein, nicht verwendbar - für pdf.). Danke
You act quite arrogant and cherrypicking between two readers. Thanks for the review anyways, I watched it, learned with it.
Awesome review! Exactly what is needed for professional and scientific worlds! Appreciate your work!
Nice motivation for recording the video, Thanks! :)
