Queen didn't write songs that they thought would go to number 1 in the charts, they wrote the songs that they wanted to write. They wanted their albums to be a true musical experience full of inventiveness, variety and surprises. In the seventies we would order the new album in advance not knowing quite what Queen had in store for us. We would then be at the record shop on the day of release to collect the new LP and rush home to play it. Queen never ever disappointed.

Nice reaction. Queen's Innuendo album is great, it is a very progressive type of album, this album is highly rated by Queen fans. The Innuendo album is darker then Queen's usual material. It was somewhat of a dark time for the band. Innuendo was a no.1 hit 9 months before Freddie Mercury's death. The song is dark but always remains hopeful as well. The song basically says that there are always a lot of things happening in the world that is out of your control, but you have concentrate on yourself and do the best that you can, or at least you have to try. Maybe it is a song that you have to hear more then once to appreciate, it like the grown up version of Bohemian Rhapsody. Queen fans usually say that they like 70's and 90's Queen the best.
Freddie's voice did lose some of it's power near his death, which you can hear on this album. But in technical terms, because he lost some of that raw power in his chest voice, he had to use more mixed voice then he usually did, which meant that he actually sang higher on this album then usual.
There are some really beautiful songs on this album such as Don't Try So Hard - czcams.com/video/b7kUc5RcMqc/video.html, or Bijou czcams.com/video/9P9e-y16qHE/video.html has some of Brian May's best guitar work.
Something else you should check out is a solo album Freddie did in 1987, the song Barcelona was used as the theme song for the 1992 Olympic Games.

"Don't Try So Hard" is my all-over FAVORITE Queen/Freddie song. (So I stand out like a sore thumb in those pop entertainment-type surveys when they ask everyone "What's your fav Queen song?" Everyone else is saying well-known titles like BoRhap, We Will Rock You, etc.) :D

This album was released the same year as Freddie’s death. He was only months away from dying and he could still sing like this? He wanted to work until he literally couldn’t get out of bed anymore, and he did. He left the band with a huge catalogue of recordings for them to work with after he died, the result was the Made in Heaven album. An amazing talent taken too early

Funny that it would be about "questioning", given that it was written by a man who was literally dying. It was a very profound song written by people questioning the "why's" of our existence on this planet. As I said, very profound. Does not have much connection to today. Where profoundness has little value. (If it can even be recognized, is questionable).

Queen won awards for this album & especially this song at the British Music awards!! Freddie was very ill at the time they accepted their award! Steve Howe from the band YES plays the flamenco guitar on this song. First time a non-member of Queen played on a Queen album. Steve said he was very nervous about doing it & didn’t want to F it up. “Be free with your temple” is one of my favorite lines in the song! “Release your mask ..... yes we’ll keep on trying”.😶

Hard to please these two lads, just sitting there all tight faced, while listening to such a complex masterpiece by Queen. Ps Freddie's voice was just as great before he died, as it ever was, just check out the song, the show must go on. Freddie was such a elite vocalist that even though he was nearly on his deathbed, while singing the show must go on, he still hit every note put Infront of him, and done it in style. RIP Freddie Mercury 🙏

You should probably do the lyric video first, personally I find videos distracting to the song. The lyrics are fantastic backed up by the band going full tilt and asking Steve Howe of Yes to play spanish guitar in the middle. Roger Taylor wrote most of the lyrics and was most likely the author of lines like "while we live according to race, colour or creed, while we rule by blind madness and pure greed, our lives dictated by tradition, superstition, false religion, through the eons and on and on. He was the most political and Freddie, even in his last days, wrote hopeful, positive lyrics. This is one of my favourite Queen songs. A song with multiple tempo changes along with March of the Black Queen and Bohemian Rhapsody. There are incredible songs on this album such as Show Must Go On and Days Of Our Lives and Bijou and Don't Try So Hard to name a few. Love Brian's solo in this as well.
