With its vulnerable vocal, tender keys, understated acoustic guitar solo and indelible melody, “Too Much Love Will Kill You” is a standout from Brian May’s 1992 solo album, Back to the Light.
Ushering in the remastered re-release of the album on August 6, the track is made available on July 30.
Originally emerging as a single on August 24, 1992, it earned Brian a solo hit when it reached No 5 in the UK Singles Chart. Ahead of that release, a visibly moved and note-perfect May previewed it before some 72,000 fans at Wembley Stadium’s Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in April 1992, perhaps cementing a misunderstanding about its origins.
“My excuse for singing it is, I think, it’s just the best thing I have to offer”, said May, by way of his on-stage introduction to the song.
His reason for singing it was not, as was often thought, that he wrote the song about the legendary Queen singer, who had died in 1991. The song has its origins back in 1986-7, when Brian wrote it with the help of a friend, eminent songwriter Frank Musker. May was in Los Angeles at the time, “far away from home” and in a “tangled state of mind”, trying to find some release from a period of profound personal upheaval.

I cannot imagine how that feels. All I can say is that you had 26 years. My partner of a mere four years was diagnosed with Stage Four terminal cancer. It may not ease your pain but at least be grateful you had that time together and treasure what you had :)

I will never forget hearing this song for the first time, when Brian sang it at Freddie‘s tribute. I watched him perform it on the live broadcast and absolutely sobbed, it was so raw and beautiful. That was the song that made me buy this album straight away originally. I love the Queen version with Freddie‘s vocal as well. Probably in my top three songs that Brian has ever written. ❤️

Every time I listen to this masterpiece I tell myself I won't cry, not again, I already know the lyrics, and that's true (I've listened to it a million times). It is personal for him. He wrote this when he was trying to save his marriage but he was in love with Anita with whom he was having an affair at the same time. It ripped him apart. However, him and Anita have now been happily married for 25 years.

Eu queria muito conhecer Brian May não por fanatismo não não, nada disso. Porque para mim ele é o cerebro do Queen (não desmerecendo os outros). Uma vez fui pesquisar a Guitarra Red Special e o valor é totalmente fora da minha realidade financeira. Pesquisei uma delas estragada somente para ter de recordação mas muito caro também. Creio que nunca conseguirei ver Brian ou Roger pessoalmente e nem ter um Red Special rsrsrsrsrsr não tem problema, o importante é ter vida e saúde. Back To The Light é um album fantástico, creio que foi um album onde Brian teve um contato maior com a realidade da vida e desafios...... Em fim It's A Hard Life não é mesmo rsrsrsrs.

En este video Brian tradujo de manera visual o didáctica que amar demasiado puede matar: no es en un sentido literal sino porque ese tipo de vida amorosa desordenada que tenía Freddie, de cierta manera, lo llevó a la muerte. Brian lee esto como si el amor duele, amar demasiado y luego perder a la persona duele. Por eso amar demasiado puede matarte es el título de la canción. Es la fase por la que estaba pasando uno de ellos, tanto que incluso le muestra al padre de Brian, el momento de depresión que tuvo, ¿no?

The voice of an angel
I think a lot of us can say we’ve experienced moments in our lives where these lyrics tell the tale of a difficult time, but hopefully we’ve come through it on the other side and are better for it. The lyrics are raw emotions we can relate to in one way or another. It is an incredibly beautiful song, with one version sang by Freddie and the other by its creator, each unique and powerful in their own right. Thank you, Brian for this crown jewel.

I grew up with Queen and the love affair started in 1976 when my older brother would play their albums. Until I stole them for my own budding Queen collection. I love this song because it's so honest. It makes you feel both the love and the lack of it. Thank you for the remaster. Queen's music is never going to leave us because it speaks to the core of who and what we are.

Every member of Queen was just Stellar beyond words...Brian is no exception ! I have never heard a band , and vocalists such as Freddie , and Brian , who could pour so much emotion , mood and feeling into a song , and leave you feeling as if you have just read a great novel, and watched an epic film all at the same time. And to anyone who has ever wondered if Brian can milk as much passion from an acoustic guitar as he does with his Red Special...well just listen to this again ...BRAVO....just BRAVO !!!!!
