  • Is your cat amazing ... or is there a parasite in your brain that exercises mind control? Get the facts on toxoplasmosis.
    --
Today, about a third of the world’s population is infected with a strange disease called toxoplasmosis - and most of them never even know it. And while the parasite can multiply in practically any host, it can only reproduce sexually in the intestines of cats. Could this disease be the reason so many people love cats and keep them as pets? Jaap de Roode shares what we know about toxoplasmosis.

Not sure it's because of toxoplasmosis, but my cat always welcome me when I comeback home. We play very often hide and seek. She loves play fetch games and she follows me everywhere like a dog. When her water was broking ( before she gave birth), I wanted to leave her alone. But she kept follow me very closely and cry very loudly like baby. So I stayed with her and she calmed down and started to give birth. While she was cleaning her babies, I decided to leave her alone again. But to my surprise, she brought one of her babies to me and she kept meowing. I finally went back to the closet where her other babies were and I stayed there with her for at least two hours while she was taking care of her babies. All these stories are true and I don't think I love her because of toxoplasmosis.

I contracted toxoplasmosis Gondi as an infant. They had no idea for a year what I had, when they did discover what was making me sick my parents were told if I lived I would probably need a liver and kidney transplant and maybe one blind. None of that happened thank goodness. It took a year and a half for it to leave my system. They also told my parents I may have heart problems as I got older. I am 46 and this one does worry me.

I came down to the comments because I wanted to say how actually dangerous toxoplasmosis can be if caught when young. I got it in like 5th or 6th grade and I thought I was going to die. I was so sick for so long and they also couldn't figure out what was wrong with me until it got so bad my dad had to carry me in his arms to see the doctor and only then did they finally test my blood and sure enough, that's what did me in. Missed like a month of school for recovery. Still love cats though.

It didn't leave your system, especially if you had it for such a long period of time. Yes it more than likely left your muscles and blood, but it's still very much dormant in your brain, and you will be experiencing a 50% higher chance of Schizophrenia You're very likely to commit suicide and have suicidal thoughts there's also many other medical and brain function issues that can occur but at the end of the day it's forever stuck inside of your brain you cannot get it out.

Love cats since 25 years, never had toxoplasmosis as evidenced by blood tests made in one occasion where that was a suspected cause for swollen lymph nodes (real cause resulted to be a throat infection). So nope, not my case. And unlikely that of most others. We love cats because they're fun, relaxing, cute, and they often befriend caring owners. I see my non-neutered 7 years old ginger male cat as something between a close friend and a little child who needs my attentions and repays me with fondness and by appearing happy and satisfied. That's really all, no toxoplasma involved.

To anyone who is worried about possibly having this parasite:
Don't. If you do have it, there is nothing to do about it anyway. And then you might as well enjoy it. Because let's say it does make you love cats. (You probably had an affection for them anyway.) What did you lose? A beautiful, pure, overflowing love whenever you see or pet a feline? Do you really think that's a bad thing? Because whenever I'm at the shelter and help those furry babies and receive their love, I'm anything but worried. How can that be bad?
Don't worry. You've only got this one life. Don't waste it worrying about things that make you happy.

I've read that if your cat is strictly indoor and has no contact with cats that go outdoors, then they are not likely to have toxoplasmosis. If your cat does go outside or have contact with another cat that does, then I think two weeks of them being strictly indoors, etc will get rid of the parasite.

      @PetroBeherha Před 8 lety +7

Yeah that was before I found out in a different video that cats (particularly their poop) are just hosts to the parasite and not the source. As for T. gondii's effects on humans, the belief that it "controls your mind" is really just typical media hype and internet rumor. There are studies that suggest having the parasite is more prevalent in people who are more aggressive and competitive, but that's more correlation than causation, and the effects are only quite slight. So you're right, me loving cats is not a valid test.

Toxoplasma also can be found inside rats' bodies, yet I don't fall in love with them. I love cats because they are adorable.

    Some friendly reminders:
Yes, taxoplasmosis can lead to serious birth defects, BUT
    1) Your vet can test your cat for toxoplasmosis, and your doctor can test you.
    2) Indoor cats are very unlikely to be infected, since they don't eat wild rodents, etc.
    3) As mentioned in the video, you can get infected from a whole bunch of things, not just cats/cat litter.
    4) If you are pregnant, wear a face mask and gloves while changing the litter box, or ask someone else to do it for you.
    5) If you scoop poop once or twice a day and regularly change all the litter, the risk is again significantly lowered, as opposed to letting the poop sit.
There is absolutely NO reason why pregnant people should get rid of their cats because of an allegedly increased taxoplasmosis risk. I see so many people still pushing that narrative, and I don't want to know how many cats very abandoned because of that.
If you are freaking out about cleaning litter boxes (that only your - probably healthy - cats use), then you should show 10 times more caution when digging through soil and sand boxes (where dozens of cats and other animals may have defecated at one point or another).

The video: 4:15 "And is toxo the reason so many people love cats and keep them as pets? Well, the jury's still out on that one. Some recent studies even contradict the idea."
The comment section: "I love cats so much, I have this disease!!!!!!!"
