They’re cute, they’re lovable, and judging by the 26 billion views on over 2 million CZcams videos of them, one thing is certain: cats are very entertaining. But their strange feline behaviors, both amusing and baffling, leave many of us asking: Why do cats do that? Tony Buffington explains the science behind some of your cat’s strangest behaviors.

There was actually a study that found cats do actually love us. The study found cats won't explore an unfamiliar environment without their "parent" within eyesight. It's often interpreted as a cat needing the security of knowing their "parent" is nearby to comfort and protect them.

So true ig. I just moved to my brother who has cats and whilst there is no unfamiliar environment here, whenever there was a weird sound they looked in that direction and then looked at me. And only when I stood up and went to go see what it was the cat would follow me. I don't think that was because of the "yeah you have to die for me" thing that many people would say it was. I think it was because he wanted me with him to be safe and sound.

Anybody with a nervous cat that is bonded to them knows this- my shy cat will only explore certain parts of the house that she doesn’t consider her territory when I’m there by her side to encourage her. If I leave her tail goes down and she slinks close to the floor- when I’m with her she raises her tail and explores more confidently but keeps looking back to me for reassurance that I’m still there. Cool that they could prove it in a study

    • @km1dash6
      @km1dash6 Před 2 lety +48

@@ESwift-Arts so here's why it needs to be confirmed. I have 3 cats. Two of them won't move around the house if I'm not there. One seems not to care if I'm there or not unless a stranger comes into the house; then he goes up to my room and hides under my bed. That is interesting because it shows that cats and humans act similarly and have similar dispositions. It's not just us projecting human emotions on them, and it shows that things like love and attachment are basic to social social animals.

I ended up moving to a house with no barn and took both the cats with me. Their transition going from murderous barn cats to being domesticated was fast, and they both turned into the best cats I've ever met.

Actually them bringing you the prize of their hunt is a token of love. It's a gift from them. :)
On the night of my 16th birthday at exactly midnight, my cat brought me a live bird. I always loved birds but wouldn't want to keep one in a cage...I'd usually just look at them from afar in the garden.
After careful examination it appeared the bird wasn't hurt at all by my cat. So I had the opportunity to just take it into my hands, look at it from upclose, somewhat pet it too, for just a few minutes.
Then my cat and I both went upstairs to the biggest window of the house, and I freed the bird. We watched it fly away together in the night sky and went to bed afterwards.
I was afraid he'd be upset I had freed his gift, he had proved quite upset at me getting rid of the occasional dead rodent offering, but not this time.
Even a few years later it remains one of the best and most special birthday gifts I ever had. 🧡

When he recovered, his doctor told him that it was surprisingly fast. The guy was intrigued and after some research discovered that the cat’s purring frequency is, as the video said, perfect for tissue regeneration. His cat *knew* that and dedicated his time in healing his human. I find that pretty cool.

I was crying on my bed when my cat Caroline came and jumped onto the bed with me. She starting nuzzling my face and purring. She was trying to comfort me and she was successful because it really helped me. She actually did that a number of times with me, whenever she was in my room and I happened to be crying, she would always do that. And I always knew she was trying to comfort me. My cat only messes with stuff when she sees a human doing it.
Ie, Christmas: I put ornaments on the tree, she immediately wants to bat at the ornaments, too (yet typically doesn’t actually knock them off or break them, and generally calms back down once the Decorating Frenzy is done...until it’s time to take things down, anyway)
Similar scenario with puzzles and legos, or if I’m drawing or writing or reading, or if I’m playing an instrument. (She thinks my singing is a cry of distress, though. Which, RUDE. I sing fine, kitty!)
So...yeah. It’s literally mimickry. All my cats have also learned to be just shy of opening doors (paws are the wrong shape. But they’re still dangerous if the door isn’t latched Just So, or if the handle’s a lever vs knob), and I swear my Mimic Cat also has her own language of meows and chatters full-on sentences, and tries mimicking English with a cry that sounds suspiciously like “Ma!”
...it’s both endearing and somewhat frightening how clever they actually are (and how much language they actually understand aside from tone and context/intent.) I’ve also noticed distinct behavioral changes when I got my family to stop calling her a “brat” unless she was actually in trouble-less submissive behavior and general mischief. Here are some things you can do to accommodate their "weird" behaviours:
1:06 Provide hiding spaces and spaces to climb. Make sure to always put your food away! *If your cat likes to knock your stuff over a lot, it most likely means they're bored. Siphon off some of their energy by playing with them more!
1:25 Don't leave your food out lol
1:32 Give your cats lots of entertainment (windows to watch birds and wildlife from, places to climb, like *cat trees* , and toys and playtime). If your cat likes high vantage points I'd highly recommend a cat tree next to the window so they can watch birds and other wildlife (their "prey") outside. You can also put a bird feeder outside to attract more birds.
1:55 Playtime before feeding, and scatter meals (2/3/4) over the course of the day. Keep in mind cats sleep 1-2 hours after they're fed at night and you should not feed them more than 12 hours apart.
2:39 Get a scratching post! This is very important. Cats scratch to mark their territory, so if your cat is really shy or overly aggressive (signifying they don't feel confident in their ownership of their territory-- your house) a scratching post(s) can make them feel at home and more confident. And if your cat is scratching your stuff more than others'-- congrats! They like you. Another way to make a cat feel at home is litter boxes and things they can get their scent on (such as blankets).
4:20 Playtime and toys! If they're chewing on your stuff, it means they're bored.
Remember positive reinforcement! Basically, reward your cat when they're not doing bad stuff. Yelling and spray bottles doesn't really help-- they can't understand what you're saying and will only be scared of you (possibly leading to other unwanted behaviours).

The more socially inclined cats do share food with those they like, which is why pet cats on occasion bring back dead things for their humans. They see humans as group members, no clear data yet if they believe us just deaf near bald cats or know us as a different species though.

When she senses it, she herds me toward my bed, and lays on my chest and purrs once I lie down. I then start having very recognizable symptoms, and eventually have the attack. Once it’s over, she hops off my chest and walks away like it never happened.
She’s done it at least three times within the past six months. It’s really amazing how she’s so insistent about it, too. She knows what I need before I do, and is really good at taking care of me during my episodes. She’ll lick my forehead sometimes, too, and always curls up next to me in bed at night.
I really love that cat 🐈

One of my dogs sniffed out a tumor I didn’t know I had. My last cat, who died a few years ago, would come and sit with me , usually on my lap. It never occurred to me that she was trying to really help. 😂❤️

Important to note that although they are considered domesticated, housecats are much closer to their wild counterparts than domestic dogs. Most canine instincts have been ablated by generations of selective breeding for certain traits. Cats retain many of their wild characteristics which is why they can be entirely self sufficient in any setting. Most dogs on the other hand are helpless without humans.

Feral cats will live in groups if enough food is available nearby. It's usually a family group descended from a female. Cats in this group will give each other food, allow other kittens to feed if they have kittens of their own and look after kittens that aren't theirs.
Their behaviour strongly suggests that cats see us as part of this group.

Fun fact: cats sometimes actually teamed up, it only happens when hunting in groups is more beneficial than hunting alone, it’s not to rare as they have learned that driving specific people insane with cuddly smallness armies tends to make that person give them food.

I think cats see us as Mother cats who don't kick them out of the nest. Mother cats are excessively devoted and caring of their young. Kittens don't leave their mothers voluntarily. They are driven off by the mother when she goes into estrus again. In a few days, the mother goes from doting and fussing to whacking and hissing. Kittens are naturally confused. Cats are just trying to get back to the momma cat that loved them. Mother cats set a high standard of care and cats come to us with high expectations. We become that loving parent who never makes them leave home. We feed them and groom them (strokes and scratches) and they can snuggle with us, all while being able to be independent and active.

Informational, but a couple details wrong.
Housecats are actually quite social in the wild, and live in colonies, hunting and raising kits in groups. This is why they hunt surplus and give prey to humans, allow trusted humans near their kits, and groom & rub against each other to keep a shared scent. They usually see humans as fellow colony members; not predator, prey, or young.
