Stereo Music Is Dead

- Due to the absurd amount of dynamic range compression applied to modern pop recordings, Dolby Atmos downmixed to stereo is beating stereo at its own game.

This has to do with the loudness war and the master and nothing with Stereo vs Atmos. There are so many excellent, high-dynamic range Stereo Masters around.
i am aware this is due to the loudness war, but nothing is going to suddenly stop the loudness war.
@@Sharur1 You personally can do it for yourself, as I am doing it for me: just listen to good, high-quality music with great masters with lots of dynamic range.
your music isn't enjoyable
@@Sharur1 you don't even know what music I am listening to.
@@Sharur1 ha ha ha .. love it ...
If you do a blind A/B poll without labelling, I'm sure you will get an inconclusive result from the general public. I'd wager most would actually prefer the maximized stereo master.
they are just more used to the sound
@@Sharur1Stereo gives me nausea,Bass and vocals both are lifeless. On the other hand Dolby bass is dynamic, punchy and vocals stands out with life and texture.
The atmos mix simply sounds less glued and EQ'd darker to me. If the EQ was fixed on the stereo mix I would prefer that one.
honestly its not that bad but it feels muffled, they need to fix that
The Atmos is sometimes darker with better imaging. For some reason the last police siren at the end hits the left ear better on the stereo than it does the Atmos. Which is correct?
Sharur Dolby Music arc, LET'S FUCKING GO.
The police siren is better on atmos ngl
Btw even with phone speaker now there is a difference 😂
yes
Hey sharur, i want to know how loud can I listen to music without hearing loss?
Ok
I can't find the study anymore right now but you might find it, it shows how different db levels impact hearing over like 30 years and it showed that 80db can lead to hearing loss over 30 years (I think this was in work environments though so long time exposure) while 70db had little impact with no impact at around 60db.
@@pasi123567 thanks!
The difference is bigger than i thought. Can you make a tutorial on how to downmixe?
Didn't this used to be the case with SACDs too? How does it sound for tracks which are already mastered properly i.e. soundtracks?
a properly mastered stereo recording is preferable to atmos when played over 2 channels. movie soundtracks are typically downmixed surround, similar to atmos
@@Sharur1 i thought maybe i was just misremembering, but most of these spacial versions sound so bad tho.
@@Sharur1 Do you have a SACD player ?
@@Sharur1 THIS. Mastering is definitively superior to stereo vs Atmos, but Atmos is superior to inferior mastering by an easy mile.
doing dolby atmos on logic has been amazing in my experience with the fact that it scales well when bounced down to stereo, from mp3's to 24 bit wav. interesting thing to know is that there are a total of 118 objects that can be rendered within the dolby's simulated environment in logic. the way you would minimize the amount of objects is group everything in stereo sub-mixes, and pan the sub-mixes in the simulated 3D environment. since your working with sub-mixes, the summed up response would be more consistent doing it this way, since the output of each sub-mix is stereo instead of each individual channel in the sub-mix being a free floating simulated object. edit: to reorganize some sentences and punctuation
an example of how this would work in dolby from what i've experianced is: create stereo submixes based off of audio stems recieved (ie, a drum submix for drum stems, instruments submix (containing synths, bass guitar, etc.), vocal submix, and a effect stem submix), do standard gain staging with each outputted submix summed amplification reaching -10db, equalize individual channels within the submixes with broader EQing done on the output stereo submix channels, after pan the submixes within the dolby atmos renderer with a multipressor, EQ, and regular compressor with the output being -6db, and export out to Mp3 - 24 bit WAV. edit: to add
Are we talking speakers or headphones?
both
If you have tidal use an Apple TV as your streamer and airplay your music to a preamp/integrated if you have that capability. All mixes are converted to stereo and you also get the benefit of increased dynamic range.
I listened to both cuts through my go to audiophile Superlux HD681's and I hear what you mean.
Both are in stereo. One has compression applied
Freak
Dolby has some tonal changes, not removed compression, so producers gotta stop tryna get loud, or else the loudness war will never end.
flavour of the day ?
no
CZcams compression has struck again 💀
it didn't do anything meaningful
The music sample is so horrible, I don't care if it s stereo, Atmos, Mono or compressed to 8 kbps.
others seem to really like it.
@@Sharur1 the world is full of bad taste...

@@Sharur1 ha ha ha ...
Stop coping.
It’s a good song and shows the dynamic difference really well
🧐 ..I THOUGHT THE STORY WAS THAT THE NASTY COMPRESSION THING STARTED BACK AROUND 2008 TO HELP THE INCREASINGLY MORE COMMON IPOD LISTENERS AT THE TIME FROM HAVING TO INCREASE THE OVERALL VOLUME AS MUCH.. 🤔
Wow, stereo master sounds so harsh :/
Where do i find more Atmos mastered music?
Edit: Rip, it's only on Apple music? 😢
Think Sharur gets money from Apple ?
Tidal, apple music and Amazon music

Big problem is that most Atmos mixes are done by total idiots. A lot of music I listen to, A-list artists at that, have atmos mixer that are lazy and don't understand the material, and I've even seen them miss entire stems that are in the stereo mix. But on the other hand Billie Eilish's newest record is the perfect example of the format done right, no goofy gimmicks, just more dynamics and more accurate positioning of elements
Your example may be a standout case of an atmos mix having better QC than the original stereo mix, but a majority of atmos mixes are simply mediocre or not a far enough deviation from the original stereo one, particularly in the case of lazy upmixing which is a majority of atmos tracks. Most atmos mixes are done in an almost automated or robotic fashion with software tools, very little creative input, and by those who do not have extensive experience with mixing music, but the demand for said mixes is increasing on the corporate side as companies are incentivising those who create these mixes as it is a perceived value-add for their customer base to sell new products/services. I would say these basic issues like clipping, high loudness etc. are more a bad feature that has been plaguing modern music for years rather than a shortcoming of traditional mixing. Atmos implicitly "corrects" some of these problems due to the standard/specsheet needing to be met, but a large majority of these atmos mixes get little scrutiny and simply go into production right away. I would say (for example theatrical) stuff with high QC produced from the ground up with atmos in mind tends to consistently sound good or even better, but that is because more care is taken throughout the process or budgets are higher, but that is not the case for most atmos music.
older atmos mixes were bad. the newer ones are mostly really good
WOOOOOOWWW... There's even *TURBO BASS* in there.
The hard truth: recorded music is trash.
The nuclear option: Play all your favorite music in piano reductions and sing along.
Dolby A (for Atmos) is good, but I prefer their more recent release of Dolby B, which I've been using since the 1980's. I heard they are planning on releasing C to the public soon.
Bladee - Cold vision review when?? its two months late you fallin of mate
Don't streaming platforms thesedays normalize volume anyway so brick walling your records makes no sense anymore?
you can turn it off
@@Sharur1 Why would producers care if it can be turned off if it's on by default and 98% of Spotify users don't know about it.
because it's the normal thing to do
@@Sharur1 I meant "can be turned off" typo. My point was most people will keep it on not knowing what it is and will just turn up the volume instead so producers should be taking advantage of the dynamic range available to them.
And i think despite what you showed today it's been turning around.
CHEESEBURGER Surround Edition.
?
holy shit there is big difference at first i thought i like the stereo one better. cuz the Dolby one sound flat and quiet but then i decided to turn up the volume on the Dolby master and it sounded excellent and then when i came back to the stereo one it sounded like trash very harsh shrill and in you face vocals and no sense of space in the mix also.
agreed, yeah the impact of the bass is much better on atmos
what banger of a song is this O_O
stereo sounds like pasted vocals :(
my music taste is incredible
Really not a fan of kpop, but thanks for the samples!
makes no difference what you use if one only likes KPOP lol
The stereo mix sounds so much more shrill and near zero dynamics.

@@Sharur1 for what

Dolby Atmos unironically sucks. It's fake. And nobody masters this way. And the remasters are not true to artist intent.
Many people who actually work on the mixing and mastering side of things say it's dog crap so no. Stereo original mixes are still king.
false
lol you must not have ever heard an Atmos mix thru an 11.2 system. My Dad is 60 this year and even in tho he’s older hes still saying he could never go back to stereo mixes on his system. Hearing backing vocals behind you and shakers above you is an experience simply impossible with stereo. and that’s not even factoring the gains present in a simple 2 channel system, ie dynamics
Cacophony!
I could not stand it more than 30 sec.
I understand that some might like this hardly saying music but I’m not the one.
Wow....the difference is insane!
yes
There is no inflation here, we just offer smaller portions these days for the same money. Oh you won't be able to tell the drop in quality/quantity? Great we love you so much
I don't hear the difference
May be stereo has more treble, and atmos has more base.
In what way is dolby vision better lol? The way you talk about video related tech is how audio noobs talk about audio lol
higher dynamic range than SDR (greater differences between bright and dark and more available colors) and it is tone mapped to a display's max luminance curve on a scene by scene basis
@@Sharur1 I also know what these things mean lol. It does not inherently have greater dynamic range. Dynamic range is dictated by the panel's black level and peak light output. The benefits of the PQ EOTF are related to the efficient allocation of code values, not DR. What is the purpose of scene by scene tone mapping? That is a willful distortion of artistic intent. Films/Shows are already graded on a scene by scene basis so why do we need further tone mapping?
i already know these things
The capabilities of the best mastering displays are higher than commercial displays. For example, OLED TVs have ABL. They can't correctly produce certain of the artist's scenes correctly. Instead of hard clipping above the display's peak brightness, dolby vision tone maps the picture in such cases.
apple garbage trash , dolby labs atmos garbage trash , apple i don't buy or use their garbage trash
