Hi everybody! Today I'm breaking down ALL of the tea, rumors, speculation and information about 1989, so if you're a new Swiftie, you know all the lore before 1989 Taylor's Version, or if you're an old fan trying to recap. Taylor Swift included a bunch of different subject areas in 1989 back in 2014, including Harry Styles, her reputation and Katy Perry, but the 1989 era included much more, such as Calvin Harris, the Girl Squad, her 4th of July parties, Karlie Kloss and more. She recently announced at the Eras Tour that 1989 TV is coming soon, so I wanted to break down all of the lore, so you know what these songs are about, and what we might be able to expect from the vault tracks. I hope you enjoy :)

She said “I can’t believe they were ever left behind” about the vault tracks which I think implies none of them were written after the album was released, because otherwise that would be the reason why they were left behind. Also I think “this is what you came for” will probably be in Rep TV if in an album, with “I don’t wanna live forever” instead of 1989 because they’re more Rep vibes to me than 1989
I think she's still been a little wishy-washy with that. In the Fearless TV announcement, she said "these were the ones it killed me to leave behind", but we know that Mr Perfectly Fine wasn't written until 2009, and Fearless came out in 2008, and that That's When, We Were Happy and Bye Bye Baby were all written for debut. Its definitely possible that she considered them again for Fearless, but I do think the "these were the songs considered for the album" thing is overstated. I don't have an issue with it at all, including her putting if this was a movie as a Fearless track, because I think it actually fits better. I think she's just putting the available songs she has where she sees fit. For example, Fearless had so many deluxe songs on the platinum edition, there probably weren't many left, whereas debut had tons of scrapped songs, so I think it makes sense to move some to Fearless.
I think when she says "they were left behind" it's not necessarily implying that the songs were meant to be in that album specifically, they were left behind because they were never officially released in general

I would prefer her to just re-release the albums with the original amount of songs. She can release albums later with unreleased tracks. She could do a boxed set. But these albums with like 37 songs are just too much to even listen to in one sitting.
I think the girl squad is her full evolution from her old image of the relatable and awkward girl to the it girl. I think the one article titled, “The girl squad is a group that 18 year old taylor could never be apart of…” accurately described how a lot of people viewed it. It looked more like a group for aesthetics and to help her pop rebrand, which was even more evident by their quick abandonment of her when things got tough. It felt more like performative feminist thing that was pretty look-centric, and given everything that Taylor has said about her eating disorder and that era in general, I don’t think the media was inaccurate pointing out how attractiveness and thin-nes played a role in that group. I think at the height of her ED and insecurities she was really trying to build the “it girl” brand, which probably took a lot of people by surprise since she had built a brand on being the “just-like-you” girl. I think she’s now branded pretty accurately in between those two images. And thank god, we don’t have to deal with all those ladies pretending they had anything in common other than dress size. I still can’t imagine a world where she’s actually friends with some of the people that she hung out with in that era. They left so fast during her twitter cancellation when being in that “squad” was no longer beneficial to their end of the PR campaign

I think she truly loved Harry. She wrote so many songs about him. You don’t write songs like that if you don’t care about them or felt something for them.

I think This Is What You Came For still has a chance as a vault track. Better Man and Babe were both songs she wrote, then later gave away.
Yeah there's a chance. Tbh I'm kinda hoping its not since there's only 5 vault tracks. I'd prefer 5 completely new songs, but I loved her live rendition of it, so I'd still love it.
I still think she needs Calvin’s permission to rerecord the song since he also has co-writing credits

I love 1989 since it’s release, it’s my favourite album and it made me a super fan of Taylor Swift. The whole story with 1989 and reputation is soooo good.

I've seen a few people say they wanna know more about the girl squad, so I think I'm gonna start working on that video. There was a lot of internal drama that people don't really know about, so it should be fun :)

No the guy thing is a false comparison. I love that Taylor seems like a great friend and supportive feminist now but this was not the vibe back then. She was truly dorky and smart in a relatable way pre-1989. The Bad Blood video was the height of her wanting to be cool and it felt so desperate at the time. 1989 is my favorite album musically, but I definitely felt myself turning on her. Like you knew you would no longer be invited to sit with her.

I have to disagree with your "I Bet You Think About Me" take. It definitely has and spot and FEELS very on-brand for RED... she talks about her ex sitting on a 'million dollar couch' Jake G. did come from a VERY rich family and growing up he did have those things. Also the 'cool inde music concerts' is a call back to "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" where she mentions ‘indie records that's much cooler than mine’ he is a big fan of indie music. Plus RED is a country album and thats a country song

I get that. Lyrically it totally makes sense to be about Jake, I've just always found it much sassier than any of the OG songs on Red, and I think the instrumental is much more country than any other song on the album. When you listen to the instrumental by itself, it sounds more like a debut song to me. I was super shocked when I heard it for the first time because I found it so different, since I've never found Red to be a heavily country album, even though it was labelled as one.

1989 made me fall in love with Taylor. I liked her music before but this album was an absolute banger and every. Single. Album since has just gotten better and better!
I agree with you about the Bad Blood video. It’s so ridiculously over the top and unnecessary. Taylor is so extra and sometimes it’s great and other times it’s a big miss.

I'm forever mad that Wildest Dreams TV is not the radio / music video version. The drums make the final chorus hit so much better. Someone on CZcams edited Wildest Dreams TV to include those drums though, so I listen to that a lot.

It kinda annoys me when other channels clearly don't like something or have criticism, but are scared to say it incase they get dislikes. Never understood the hate of the girl squad. To me it was empowering that you have your girls with you think and thin whether it’s against a man or another woman, you know your friends will be there. So why all the hate? & y’all know as much as we women love to stand together EVERYONE HAS BEEF WITH SOMEONE. So don’t play innocent, you’re a villain in someone’s story whether you like it or not, that’s reality.

I loved this video because I was a fan during that era but I was really young and not on social media like that so I missed out on so many details :,) It’s like experiencing everything for the first time again. Back then we didn’t stream on apps that much we used to stream youtube videos and buy the physical CDs

I would LOVE if she collabs with Katy Perry in this album. It would be so iconic because Katy is another huge iconic pop superstar, but when 1989 came out, they were “beefing” so they didn’t have a chance of collabing. So if they do it now, it would be a full circle moment and a proper FEMALE POP collab in both of their careers. It’s sad that Katy and Rihanna never collabed back then, and now Taylor only collabs with female singers when she gives them backing vocals 💀

I’ve been a Taylor fan since 2008, shortly before Fearless was released. The criticism of Taylor started around the end of the Speak Now era. People were criticizing her for writing fairy-tale songs at 20 years old. Criticism only increased with Red, during the public debate of who All Too Well was about, people accusing her of changing genres to be more likable, and those of us who were caught off guard by the drastic change in musical sound. As soon as she was in 1989 era, things seemed to reach their peak with the girl squad, Karlie Kloss, and Katy Perry. It was only after Kanye leaked that phone call that things came crashing down (which was something he did illegally by the way, as it is illegal to record a phone call without knowledge and consent of both parties, of which Taylor was unaware that she was being recorded.) After that crash though, things seem to have slowed down. I don’t hear many criticisms about her anymore. You covered this well, and as someone who vividly remembers living through 1989 era, it’s true when you say she was unavoidable. She was so popular at the time that even SNL made skits about it, one joking that if you’re sick of Taylor then you should take ‘swiftamine.’ Well done.

About Karlie, Taylor most probably wrote other songs bout her (coz that's how she process her feelings) but i forever doubt she will put them out. Coz i think this failed 'friendship' is too hurtful for her (same as S. Borchetta treachery) coz these guys were like family to her..not just another bff & u never want to be banging bad things about one of ur closest friend in a song.. So, since they already got one song each, i don't think she'll put out another..coz say, if someday (hope this will never happened) she falls apart with Selena..or Emma Stone..or Abigail..she wouldn't put out songs condemning them either.. I agree with what you said about Karlie. The point I tried to make at the end was that all three vaults so far contained songs about stuff that wasn't even mentioned in the original album, so there's probably gonna be something in the 1989 vault that we didn't even think about.

I could do one on Midnights even though its recent. The only issue is a lot of it, swifties still don't agree on who half the songs are about, so it might be tricky knowing what to include. Plus, I think we'll get more info about how her and Joe broke up in TS11, so that might shed some light on the events leading up to Midnights.

Remember when 1989 was released and calvin called taylor why she didn't wrote any songs about him so she wrote "i forgot you existed". I'd rather not have any songs about him in the vault and not feed his ego.

I wasn’t a fan back then, but oh boy I knew everything around Taylor in that time. I have to admit I had jumped into the hate train for a while (I was a massive KP fan, so dumb fandom mentality was my norm back then), but now, after many many years of growing, learning and deconstructing myself I think I’m finally clean (😉). I remember it was “cool” hating her, everyone did it (sadly myself included, I’m not going to be an hypocrite about it) and it got massive in 2016. The day she got massively canceled was a day I will never forget. Like Twitter was crazy with that infamous hashtag!!
Now, looking back, almost 99% of the things Taylor was accused of was a lie. It’s sad it happened, but I believe she’s a stronger woman rn, enjoying life and her success as she deserves.

I wasn't trying to agree with the hate too much lol. Like I said, I've never liked the Bad Blood music video, just because I think it made Taylor look petty. It was just a bad move from a PR point of view, and I feel really sorry for her that she put so much effort in the squad only for half of them to abandon her once she was cancelled in 2016.

Everyone gets mad when she write songs about other girls, but loves it when she writes about her boyfriends. Then she gets criticized writing too many songs about boys, so she write about her friends or people who she’s had problems with, and everyone is shocked.
Well that's why she switch in writing songs with fictional characters in her Folklore and evermore album.. Lol

I think there will be a song that is lyrically similar to ‘Nothing new’, I think that the song would deal with all of the criticizing she was recieving and her friendships/relationships falling apart.
It may be a flaw in Taylor that lead her to want to be friends with everyone and felt like publicly showing her friendships off, but imo it is a much scarier flaw in society that anyone would have a problem with it. Like she's literally just a woman having other women friends.. and that's bad to people somehow. 😬 also the fake feminist take is kinda bs too, you can be a feminist and still hate someone.
