2 years later and the car lifting kit with the trolley jacks and wheel chocks he mentioned costing around £70 is £110 now.

At 3:47 the reason the jack is tilting is because it wasn't able to slide as the lift went up, these jacks have good stability only if they can keep centered at the jack point, your crumbly driveway blocked those wheels from moving forward. Otherwise, while smaller, it could have done the job quite satisfactorily.

Agreed. If I don't see the wheels moving forward I release it and start again. It helps to point the rear castors forward so they don't fight the jack's intention of moving forward. However I disagree with you there because the expensive jacks tend to have much bigger wheels that tend to work better on rough surfaces, whereas the smaller wheels of the cheap jacks tend to dig in to the surface. Thos big front wheels on expensive jacks are worth the premium alone.

Today I bought the Halfords 2 tonne low profile trolley jack, used it tonight to change the pads on my car and I must admit I was quite happy with it. It seemed a lot sturdier than the wee one you used. Thought it was a bargain at £55, I just couldn't justify buying anything more expensive as I wouldn't use it often enough

Having used that exact 2 tonne halfords jack for some 14 years+ I will say that it is proven to be very good quality. The difference in price between the two jacks in this video is substantial and you really need to be working on vehicles a lot to justify purchasing the bigger one in my opinion (or if your vehicle is 1500kg+). With the rise in popularity of all these Crossovers and SUVs however, that halfords jack wont cut it (that has a lift height of 38cm). If you have something like a KIA sportage you will need a jack that lifts much higher.

Good review! Very to the point and not confused rambling. You’ll go far with the channel if you keep putting out contents.

I've got the same Halfords which must be about 30 years old and is still fine after years of abuse, it's done engine changes, clutch jobs etc. Yes it's a bit wobbly but it doesn't owe me a penny. However I have had more recent Halfords jack's which haven't lasted at all. They do currently have a low profile version which I'm happy with the quality so I'm going to pick me one up, currently only £41.99

If I'm honest I own the Halfords jack and still use it 6 years later (providing you service it) yes it's small and it's a slog to pump but aslong as you're using jack stands for any major work these jacks can be used for anything within it's weight limit. I even used it to drop an engine to change the clutch so there is seriously nothing wrong. The draper is obviously significantly better.

I'd disagree that for the occasional user the Halfords or equivalent cheap jack is a good choice. I've been using the Halfords Jack's for decades and originally this was because the more advanced jacks were really pricey. But the cheap jacks tire you out more, creak, and are not as stable as the more advanced ones. That additional time and effort takes a toll on the more extensive jobs, especially where you may need to lower and raise the car multiple times. The narrow wheels on the cheaper jacks will also indent softer surfaces like tarmac. The aluminium heavy duty ones with the large roller front wheel, rubber protector and some with a locking mechanism, will put less pressure on your back, save you time and will help you get the job done a lot more comfortably.

The 2 Tonne Halfords one is disconcerting in use. I've used it for a number of years and am constantly worried when jacking a car up that something is gonna fail on it due to the creaks and groans it makes, even on a 1.5 tonne car. Recently got the 3 tonne which isn't that much more but seems a whole lot more stable to use.

I think its a bit unfair calling the little orange jack "the Halfords one" since Halfords also have jacks very similar to the Draper in this video. Minor comment but enjoyed the video nonetheless.

I wish I hadn't bothered buying a cheap Jack, exactly the same issue with the back wheels lifting up of the floor, didn't feel very stable was quite unnerving. Even for the most basic tasks just invest in a proper one it will last so much longer, will pay for itself after one or two services, false economy getting a junk one...

Which? Neither. For £50-60 buy a proper used Hi-lift Epco or Bradbury on eBay. Measure them, and pop a new set of seals in there for £15, see it blow that Draper trash into the weeds. And do this for another 40-50 years. A Bradbury 586 if you can get one. The Halfrauds item is only good - if cheap is all you'll ever need. Epco or Bradbury is for life. What do these young kids know eh?
