  • We analysed the HDMI 2.1 output from the Sony PS5 (Playstation 5) console, and found that the maximum bandwidth it can deliver either at 4K@60Hz or 4K@120Hz is currently 32Gbps, which is lower than the 40Gbps HDMI 2.1 bandwidth on the Xbox Series X.
    Calculations: 4K@60Hz at 12-bit RGB = 32Gbps (8Gbps at 4 Lanes)
    4K@120Hz at 12-bit 4:2:2 = 32Gbps (8Gbps at 4 Lanes)
Japanese teardown of Sony PS5, revealing HDMI 2.1 chipset from Panasonic Semiconductor Solutions/ Nuvoton Technology (MN864739):
    www.4gamer.net...
We are not sure if this Panasonic chipset is capable of 40Gbps or 48Gbps.

@@Andronicus87 man, I'm kind of a sony fanboy (after the x360 rod fiasco), but this ps5 is becoming less and less appealing, and more disappointing, each day.
The good days are gone, when sony would do the impossible to build a state of the art console, like the ps1, ps2 or ps3. With the ps4, sony choosed the nintendo route: build a new system as cheap as possible, like 250 bucks or less, to sell it day one at 449 or 499.
The ps3 was so powerful and ahead of its time, that the ps4 games could easily run on a ps3, with some minor tweaks and a lower resolution... that's why a gta5, tlou or uncharted remasters look basically the same, on the ps4 and ps3.
The ps4 pro should have been the launch system, back in 2013...
Now, this ps5, it's compromises after compromises, to reach that 200-$250 price:
      Gddr6 instead of gddr6x
      Only 825/660GB after format
      No 1440p support
      Now, this limited hdmi2.1
      Only 36 CUs
      Only 10.3tflops
      Etc etc
Even with the fancy nvme tech, 2 times faster than the xbox, on paper, in reality the x sx games load much much faster.
      This ps5 is basically a ps4 pro v2...
Sony may claim 10.3 and 12 tflops difference isn't a big deal... but we all saw how much much better, sharper, etc, the rdr2 xbox 1x 6tflops version did look, compared to the 4.2 tflops ps4 pro version.
Those 2 tflops, or 20% extra power might not look a lot... but in future games, that difference could mean a ps5 version upscaled, vs a xsx version native... or a 40fps ps5 version vs a 60fps xsx version... or a high res texture pack on ps5 vs a photorealistic pack on the xsx... or even a msaa 2x on ps5, vs a msaa 8x on the xsx...
Not a big deal, they say, right...
After the x360, I skipped the x1. Almost no exclusives, less powerful, etc etc. Today, the xsx is a beast, and to people like me, who is building a zen3/rtx3090 rig to play cyberpunk, the gaming pass alone could be a fantastic deal. hundreds of titles to discover, for 10 bucks.
Since the ps3 era, sony became more and more arrogant, self-confident, greedy, each day.
We went from 64 90% metacritics free games per year, on the ps+ ps3, with 5 possible installations , to 90% of indie crap , on ps4. 2 installs max.
Also, if i am a ps+ subscriber, why do I have to manually add the monthly free ps+ games to my library...why can't sony simply add them to me ?
Each new day, the ps5 becomes a even bigger joke. And it is even more sad, to find out about these kind of things... frankly, what can be the difference in price, between a 40gb hdmi 2.1 chip, and a 32Gb one ? 10 cents? 5 cts ? Lol...
What about the gddr6 and gddr6x..? 20 dollars more expensive? 10 dollars ?
Probably with those 10 miserable dollars, the ps5 could maybe be a 11Tflops system, instead of 10.3...
+ all the lies.. like tsushima being the last ps4 title... Just to announce miles morales would be released on the ps4...
Cyberpunk will be the next biiig title: gigantic city, tons of npcs, reflexions all over the place, great animations, ultra detailed characters, etc etc.
It will be interesting to see how the game is going to run, on the ps5 and xsx...
I'll now be picking a xsx before the ps5, for sure. As it is, today, sony don't deserve my money.
      For s

TBH, it is probably 10-bit with zeroed out last two least significant bits (LSBs). HDMI YCC422 packing can contain between 8 to 12bpc depending on what the encoder IP is configured to output. Many sink devices often report incorrect color depth when YCC422 is utilized because of this. This is probably why the LG TV incorrectly reports 8bpc. The PS5 uses HDR10 for games and that profile is defined for 10-bpc / 30-bpp. You can still be happy about seeing the 12-bit indication on the AVR, but it's not really 12 bit. :)

So if you are only capable of passing 32gbps, you have to pick and choose which criteria you have enabled. There's another video here on the channel that speaks about this. Dynamic HDR is supposed to make a huge difference over static HDR bit it depends on If it's done by a frame by frame basis or a scene by scene basis. Frame by frame is supposed to be incredible but you have to set an HDR value for 24 frames a second for a movie. Since HDR is just metadata it doesn't take up much bandwidth at all. There isn't a commercial display out yet that has the brightness or everything for HDMI 2.1. While small, things like QFT and QMS will make changes frame rates seem less so no drop outs to re-synch from say 60hz/120hz to 24hz when going from. Game to movie.

The sweet spot will be 1080P @ 120fps with Ray Tracing ON
We still have long way to mastered 4k resolution with all technologies together with high FPS without using upscaling methods, maybe 5-10 years from now
8k gaming pointless for the next 10-15 years with high FPS and all technologies together without upscaling methods

      Brilliant find! Cheers.
Relevant bit here: The LG TV will change all the inputs to output your content as 4:2:2 chroma subsampling. Even using Game Mode won't help. The only way to get full 4:4:4 chroma is to change your PS5's input to 'PC' in the Input Settings on your LG TV. And then use Game Mode in that 'PC input' of cos; because there's no ALLM on the PS5.
This is very important if you want to fully utilize the full 4:4:4 chroma. Both RGB and YUV444 outputs the full 4:4:4 chroma. This means that every single pixel will get its own colour information.

If it's not caused by a cable which came with the ps5, it might be fixed in an update that will enable 8k video support for ps5.

Maybe it's caused by this ps5's cable after all? It's labelled as high speed cable, not an ultra high speed which is necessary for 48 gb/s bandwith.

Thanks for your work, Vincent! I wonder if this limitation has something to do with mitigating the 900h hdmi 2.1 issues or at least related to it. It seems like Sony is having trouble delivering enough data for 4K@120hz and high quality audio to that TV due to a "bug." I hope you have a chance to play around with the 900h and a PS5 since a lot of us have purchased it based off Sony's marketing.

Thanks for the quality video! I have a Samsung Q90r, which although is HDMI 2.0b at 24gb supports 120hz at 4k. Now the Series X runs through this TV 4K 120hz no problem. Most I can get out of the PS5 is 4K 60hz. Is this likely a Sony issue or a Samsung issue? Keep up the amazing content!
