The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Back then the United States was in the beginning phases of the Vietnam war, race riots, civil unrest and an ugly string of political assassinations..jfk, rfk, mlk. They were not the "good old days" that people romanticize. Nonetheless, the music was beautiful.❤

Did Mathis ever sing a duet with Connie . That would be something to see and hear . Two of the greatest singers . Both Connie and Johnny recorded the song " I'm Glad There is You " in a very similar arrangement . Connie sang it on her great 1964 album ' A New Kind of Connie ", the time when she went from singing about lipstick , cupid and boys and metamorphized into a singer of adult standards .

The great Johnny Mathis turned 88 this weekend. He is backed by Henry Mancini and his orchestra in this classic clip, and with all due to Andy Williams Johnny does wonderfully by all these songs. See him while you can; he will not be with us forever but, while he is, you will hear about 85% the quality of the voice you hear here.

    JM: The King of Vibrato
We should not watch recordings such as these as we will be reminded of what has been lost since the creation. Standouts:
    1) The absence of a civilized variety show for family consumption
    2) Henry Mancini and Johnny Mathis - These men are the definition of professional artists to be admired and respected
    3) We may appear financially wealthier as a nation today, but in many clear respects, we are much poorer and underserved in quality entertainment
    4) @0:47 - 1:33 - The transition from Dear Heart to Days of Wine and Roses. So elegant and moving

Three movie songs by the great, great Henry Mancini, here leading his orchestra from the piano. And performed in this case by, in my opinion, one of the best crooners ever. "Dear Heart", original song from the film of the same title, directed by Delbert Mann and starring Glenn Ford and Geraldine Page, was nominated for Best Original Song at the 1964 Oscars, but lost to "Chim Chim Cheree", from film "Mary Poppins." "Days Of Wine And Roses", like "Moonriver" with lyrics by Johnny Mercer, did win the 1962 Oscar for Best Original Song. It is the main theme of the film of the same name by Blake Edwards, with Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick. And finally, what can we say about the legendary "Moonriver", sung in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" with that sensual and at the same time fragile voice of the unforgettable Audrey. This song was also the winner at the 1961 Oscars. These songs, in addition to Mathis, have been covered by many artists, so we can choose between Andy Williams, Tony Bennett, Bobby Darin, Sinatra, Billy Eckstine, etc., etc. Which version of each song do you remember most?
