the extra piece of glass is for the 33 willys panel truck
the flip nose will work better if you add a lip around the edge of the cowl with sheet styrene
"Ohio George" Montgomery comes to my local dragstrip every year for The Nostalgia Drags. I got 4 prints of all his cars & a T-shirt signed.
He sell a 1/18 diecast of this Gasser for $120, well detailed too. Super nice guy. I spent about half an hour talking to him & his wife.
Very cool!
Thanks for the explanation on "Hemi", very easy to picture and understand
Nice unboxing of a classic AMT kit. Thanks for sharing.
Matt. I believe the extra small windshield is for the panel van version of this model 👍👍🙏
Correct. I'm lucky to have both models and that's what the other one is for.
I got both versions of this model too except my coupe is one of the Ohio George reissues
Amt was in Troy Michigon for years hence the license plate. The rear is 57 Olds. Thet wete tough and very popular in the Gasser wars or the 60s. Thanks for the videos and the memories Matt.
Thanks for the info!
Thanks for the review. Brings back memories. Of course this is the rehash of the Ohio George gasser. It's even in the same color plastic. Those tires! The reason for the two different glass heights was they made the body with the chopped line, and a panel van with the regular line. Decal and instructions yellow from the acid in the cardboard boxes. I built this kit when it was new in '79. Mine was dark metallic blue with the flames. I had it up until the 2000s and it was in storage. It was one of many that was crushed in a box in the attic. I only have photos now. I do have the last pretty box of the Ohio George release and someday will build it. That tire looking thing was George's single weelie bar
👍🏻👍🏻
Nice! I remember building that bottom kit at 13 years old. 😁 thanks for sharing! 👍👍♥️
Thanks for giving us a look at a cool old kit!!
Detroit. Is in michigan
Lol!!! I thought it was! My mind was off I guess
That is a pretty cool kit but dang at the flash, just keep sanding, just keep sanding!!! I have a Stone Woods and Cook Swindler II Willys gasser kit that I am itchin to build, just need the time to do it. Cool magnifying glass. I like the ones that clamp on the edge of a desk that have a light, allows you to not have to hold the darn thing when trying to paint tiny details. I don't have one but I made something similar. I refurbished a Testors/Burago Lamborghini Countach recently and I painted the wheels gold with Tamiya TS-21 gold paint and wanted the hubs and lugnuts to be chrome. Well I had a small magnifying glass and a soldering iron stand with a weighted base so I attached a metal binder clip to the underside of the soldering Iron stand and inserted the handle of the magnifying glass through the silver handles of the binder clip and presto, instant hands free magnifying tool!!! It worked great and I used a Molotow chrome pen with a 1mm tip to paint the hubs and lugnuts and it all turned out pretty dang nice. Cool kit and can't wait to see what it looks like when you are finished building it!!!
Nice kit review. Matthew. The 3 sided glass is for the van version of this kit.
Another great kit and fun build. Happy Birthday to your brother who happens to have the same birth date as myself.
Very cool
I remember building that kit when I was a kid and I also have a remake of that kit that I have built and still have
The B&M “Hydro stick” was the trans of choice for a lot of the racers back in the day. It is a modified GM hydromatic 4speed automatic and used a clutch for staging.
Hey Matthew I have both the 1982 and 1983 AMT catalogs. The 83 is the first one with the Ertl name together with Esci. So the 83 is the first to show the Ertl name. The 82 shows Lesney name with Matchbox.
Cool
Good looking kit and a great memory excellent
Great video Matthew. So much of my modeling inspiration comes from memories. We’re getting old
Lol! Yep
I love AMT kits. I have several Nascar models to make. Just started my second one. I wish I'd bought more off ebay when they were cheap!
Always glad to see you open these old kits. Keep up the great videos
Thanks
I've always loved the kit as well Matt ❤
I built the ERTL kit a couple of years back. It was a fun kit to build. I picked it up at a yard sale. The decals were missing. 😢 I had to paint the grill on. I'll try to get pictures and post them.
👍🏻👍🏻
Nice kit. It's cool when you find a kit that brings back memories.😊 You should build this one.👍
The middle "glass" is for the 33 Willys Panel Delivery kit. I built one of the original Ohio George Montgomery coupe when it was a new issue in the 1960s. I also built the Panel kit that was the same kit with a different main body shell. Painted it yellow. Put a Chiquita Banana sticker on each door as the "sponsor" of my team. The pale blue color is for the George Montgomery original version. Like his car. In a side note... I used to know Don Emmons who took the pictures for AMT of George Montgomery's car that this was originally a kit of at the Winternationals. Don wrote for Model Car Science magazine and the AMT Meyers' Manx kit was based on his full scale car. So if you run across a kit of Ohio George Montgomery's Willys, Don took the photos on the box. By the time that kit you opened for this video was made, I worked for Mattel Toys, who owned Monogram. And in commuting to work I passed by the Revell headquarters where a friend of mine worked... Memories. The engine in Ohio George's 33 Willys was a Ford 427 SOHC. Same side oiler bottom end as a Le Mans Ford GT Mark 2 or Mark IV, or a 427 Cobra. The trans is a Ford C6. Stout trans and ate far less horsepower than a GM Turbo 400. This car did NOT use a GM Hydro like the Stone Woods & Cook 41 Willys. This kit has tires that have use on other cars. Not appropriate for this drag based Willys. Or street hotrod Willys.
Cool! Thanks for the info
I agree with you about the Michigan plates they have too many.
Nice kit comparisons, both look to be great kits, have fun building.😊
The small tire on the sprue was remnants of the wheelie bar left over from the original issue of the kit.
Great video, thanks for sharing.
I'd say you're right. That part doesn't have a number on it. The 29 next to it is the bar that goes on the back of the car, and the think Matthew thought was a torque converter doesn't seem to be shown in the instructions. It is not shown on the parts diagram in the instructions either.
The bar next to it is the push bar, the rest of the parts for the wheelie bar are on the chrome tree.
The original issue Ohio George gasser and the new issue from a few years ago have all the parts that are missing from the issue in the video.
Almost forgot, one or two other issues from the 90’s (?) have all the parts.
The issue in this video was the street version, I guess they thought we didn’t need all the drag race parts.
Cool, thanks
I believe AMT was out of Michigan. Such a cool car. I love the memories as well Mathew.😎👍
👍🏻👍🏻
I remember building this kit for a friend back around 30 years ago in the early 90's,it being in the light blue plastic with the grille as a decal & that massive ford engine, but the boxart being totally different so it would have been an early 90's AMT release no doubt as the model on the box was a photo of the model with 2 tone paint scheme with a red lower body with black upper parts along with the roof, also too I remember another friend building the Revell '41 Willys 'Street Demons' kit back in around 1985,funny thing was though one was,one was AMT,the other Revell, both were Willys but both kits being moulded in the light blue styrene though but,lol
Very cool!
Dang youngsters! I will be 59 on the 26 of July! LOL 😢😢😢
Detroit MICHIGAN MOTOR CITY. AMT was originally headquartered in Michigan. The kit was originally marketed as the Ohio George Willis with his markings. His original car was not chopped. The original kit would have had the appropriate slicks and front skinnies for tires.
Initially his car was not chopped. But by the time AMT made the kit, George Montgomery's car WAS chopped. Look at the pictures on the original box. Not art work. They are actual pictures.
Looks like a very cool kit
Ironic as I am going thru a Willis phase right now! I don't mess with AMT but prefer building the Revell versions. Much better kit. Those AMT kits were made by blind men! Very cool video, Thanks!
This looks like a decent kit to build once you get all that flash and mold lines off of everything! You can paint it up any color you want, give it your lucky number and a nickname and no one can say you're wrong!
The other glass is from/for the Willys sedan delivery kit, no rear window.
I remember this kit from years ago. Glad to see you open up your sealed kits Matt!!! Sometimes we never know what we'll find as far as the condition of the kits. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your weekend.
Thanks Chris
Drag city casting makes a better nose and an unchopped body. The trans is a c6.
I remember trying to cut the slugs out of the tires without slicing the sidewall, nippers would've been nice back then
Oh those tires again! I have purposely never bought this version of the 33 Willys because of the tires. The box art looks like an off-road car more than a gasser, LOL. But, different tires and a little work and these 33’s are really cool.
I recently did a same vintage 33 and to my surprise the grill decal held together
Nice
Always cool to see these time capsules cracked open. I have the same feelings and memories with the old monogram nascar kits as they remind me of when my dad and I would sit and watch the races on Sunday afternoons. I agree with the part about being able to share our builds and kits with the you tube model community. I started my cannel about 2 months ago and so far its been an awesome experience! Thanks for this video!!
Nice 😅
That piece of glass is the optional clear sun roof
I wish someone would come out with this kit with the stock roof. There are so many of these still running nostalgic drags that dont look the same when you try building them. And none of them run offroad tires!😂
You are correct Ohio George Montgomery
My memory bank doesn't hold much from my history. I can remember facts and figures, but I don't seem to retain many personal memories from my growing up years. Weird psychological memory block maybe. An old school buddy of mine said he was jealous about the AMT Gremlin kit I built in high school, but I don't actually remembering building or even owning it. 🙂
Wow that's something.
great video Matt the one i sent you has a book in the bottom of the boss shows the real ohio georg and some nice pics
I will check it out
Cool car, man them riding mower tires , ugh 😂
Lol! That is what they look like
We just sometimes have to live with those annoying flaws in a kit mold. One of those things I call "vaguery of the kit"!
Wiki on Ohio George Montgomery:

Very cool kits!. Glad to see you open em up. Do you know if they ever had one in yellow? I have one similar with no box but its in yellow. Thanks!
I have a newer one from. The 90's but haven't opened it to see the color.
I had the same kit back in the day it had big slicks
The diff is probably a Oldsmobile, Pontiac very popular back then my dad has a 57 Pontiac rear end in his 55 chevy, that is a C6 transmission pan on the Chrome tree, that than that looks like a torque converter is the wheel for the wheelie bar,
the big auto makers where in Detroit Michigan, i think that's why they use Michigan license
I had this and someone else i knew did to👍
👍🏻👍🏻
The glass included the windshield from the panel truck version also.
That kit is actually the amt old Malco Gasser kit. The only thing different is the vinyl tires and no malco gasser decal sheet.
Pretty sure there was an earlier version of this kit from the early 70s or late 60s. I remember building it as a kid when the gassers were still competing.
all you have to do is goggle the kit number.and matchbox kit.and it should show how old the kit is.from the side ove the box.
Remember long time ago molded in light blue?
👍🏻👍🏻
Could the number stamped on the box bottom be a date code? 1187
That's what I'm thinking, November of 87 is what I think.
That front clip needs a lot of tlc and sanding. Those line in the fender should not be there.
Im pretty sure there are no original Willys parts. The scoops on the fenders are not flash.
Matt - I have left email and comments - but don't see them Do you have any answers??
I'm not sure why I can't see them. Did you email me or leave your email in the comments?

There's nothing wrong with pointing out a kit's manufacturing issues.
It's obnoxious when someone serves up that spicy hot 'HURRR THE MODEL ISN'T THE PROBLEM MATTHEW, IT'S THE BUILDER' take, because it misses the point.
If you were telling people a story about how you grabbed dinner to-go and when you got home you found that the restaurant messed up your order, most of them wouldn't respond with 'HURRR THE TAKE-OUT ISN'T THE PROBLEM MATTHEW, STOP BEING A PICKY EATER!' because that misses the point. It's not that you were unable to eat - or even enjoy - the food, but it wasn't what you wanted, and you said as much.
The model is still buildable, and you can still enjoy it, but the additional manufacturing corrections aren't necessarily something you wanted. Why is saying as much out loud considered being whiny or malcontent?
Scientists are noticing less bullsh*t in the air being released by these unboxings. Proven fact. Multiple independent studies.
