The Buick Wildcat was a full-sized automobile that was produced by Buick from 1962 to 1970. It took its name from a fiberglass-bodied 1953 concept car.
In 1962 the Wildcat was a Buick Invicta subseries, mating the Invicta's longer full-size two-door hardtop Buick body (known as the "sport coupe", body production code 4647) with a high-performance 325 hp (242 kW) version of the 401 cu in (6.6 L) Nailhead V8, known as the "Wildcat 445" for producing 445 lb⋅ft (603 N⋅m) of torque. To further distance itself from the Invicta, the Wildcat had Electra 225-like taillights, a bucket seat interior, and a center console with tachometer and transmission shifter. It had a Dynaflow transmission shared by all full-sized Buicks, plus special exterior side trim, vinyl-covered roof (new for 1962), and its own unique emblem: a stylized head of a wild cat, located on each of the C-pillars. However, the Wildcat did share the LeSabre's and Invicta's trio of VentiPorts on the front fenders, a design cue lasting only through the 1963 model year.
In 1966 a one-year-only Wildcat "Gran Sport Performance Group" package could be ordered by selecting the "A8/Y48" option. Two engine choices were available. The single carb 425 CID/340 hp V8 was included in the base package price with a 360 hp (268 kW) dual-carb set-up available at extra cost. Initially, this 20 hp (15 kW) upgrade remained a dealer-installed carb-intake modification bolted to stock MT-coded engines but eventually these "Super Wildcats" could also be obtained direct from the factory with MZ-coded engines. Rounding out both the base and Super GS packages were dual exhaust, heavy-duty suspension, posi-traction and updated rear quarter-panel "GS" badging in the new, initials-only format employed on all post-1965 Gran Sports. A total of 1,244 Wildcat GSs were built by Buick during the model year. Of those, 242 were convertibles and the rest were hardtops. A mere 22 (consisting of an unknown mix of both body styles) were Super Wildcats.
A styling appearance cue was adopted from the popular 1963 Buick Riviera, where the beltline arched up over the rear wheels, a modification of an older styling element called the "Sweepspear," with later vehicles installing a rub strip along the entire side of the vehicle tapering down as it reached the rear bumper.
The year 1967 brought a new engine to the Wildcat line (along with the Riviera and Electra 225) - a 430-cubic-inch V8 with four-barrel carburetor and 360 hp (268 kW) rating that featured larger valves for better breathing than the previous 401/425 Nailhead design that dated back to Buick's first V8, in 1953. It had a 10.25:1 compression ratio and a four-barrel carburettor, with maximum power reached at 5000 rpm and 475 lb⋅ft (644 N⋅m) of torque at 3200 rpm - all SAE gross values. The 430 was relatively short-lived as it was only offered through the 1969 model year. For 1970, the 430 was superseded by the largest Buick V8 engine ever - a 455-cubic-inch engine that was basically a bored version of the previous engine with the same large-valve design, a horsepower rating of 370, and torque rating of more than 500 pounds. 1967 and 1968 saw the addition of new federally mandated safety equipment that provided better occupant protection in collisions, and accident avoidance features as well. Like other full-size U.S. cars of the late 1960s, the Buicks became bigger, plusher, and less economical.
The Wildcat was offered only in Custom trim for its final year of 1970. It was superseded by the Buick Centurion for 1971.
The 1965-1970 GM B platform is the fourth-best selling automobile platform in history after the Volkswagen Beetle, Ford Model T and the Lada Riva.

    Hey Chris;
Here’s a little suggestion for those who want to eliminate that bit of sloppiness in kits where metal axles are a bit long. You know those clear plastic tubes that protect small brushes when they are new? Cut a bit from them, usually a couple of millimetres or so will do it, insert the tiny pieces between wheel and axle housing or chassis or whatever… no sloppy wheels!
As always, I enjoy your work, and your demonstrations of great ideas for improvement.

I just got this kit delivered today from the internet. In about two weeks I'll have the actual car. Like the one you drive! Have been looking for a 66 Wildcat for quite some time. Found it in another state and have paid for it and am awaiting it to be shipped. So looking forward to building the kit to match the car. Red body with black interior. It does appear that the dashboard in the kit is patterned off a 1965 Wildcat. My real car has a split bench with column shift and no console. I'm 57 and fondly remember building glow in the dark monster model kits in the mid 70's. I wish I'd held on to them. I think there were about 12 different ones in the series. I've never watched a model building video before and really appreciate all the tips, descriptions of the paints and tools. Excellent job of building it and keeping it interesting. I think I found a new hobby. Build models of classic cars I've owned.

Our first new "Detroit boat" was a 66 Buick Sportwagon, ordered from the factory in Astro Blue. Had the skylights. The Wildcat engine, a 340, was painted GM orange (spent more time fixing the rear axle bearings than the engine!). Dad wanted a good car to haul the family around in. I learned to drive in it. Memories!

Fun review to watch! I love the concept of a "weekend build". Glad to see some else use Testors graphite metallic paint for a wash. In the early 1990s, I discovered by accident how that very thin paint was useless when trying to cover a large area. I did find that it was PERFECT for making valve cover fins, chrome wheel lug nuts as well as chrome grill wash really pop. I love your suggestion that a simplistic kit like this still builds up into a nice shelf model and better still...that you can involve your younger family members in the fun. The future of our hobby lies in the hands of young people. Anything we can do to drag them away from their computer games would be a step in the right direction. Yet another great inspirational video Chris. Thank you!

Hello, I remember when these cars were brand new, state of the art at the time and Buicks top line cars. These kits from then used to have metal screws where the pins go to hold the chassis now and the hoods were held on with metal clips. Some kits still have the tabs where you put the metal clips for the hood. For one is '53 ford F100 pickup truck kit, the '57 T- Bird and the '58 Chevrolet Impala for a few. On the bottom back side of the hood and the behind the fire wall are the tabs for the clips. The hole in the firewall is still there. I (believe it or not) still have several hood clips and used a few on the F100 hoods and it works great. Did not work for the '57 T-Bird though the tabs got to small for the clips to work, to bad they don't use the clips and screws any more. OOPS showing my age now. LOL I really love the color choices and the way you assembled the kit as a slight custom. Maybe the kid damaged the original hood and had to settle for a fiberglass custom hood. I am now going to look at the next one now about the cannon.

@@AvengerII Many cruise ships are registered in Liberia for tax purposes and many 60s and 70s cars were enormous. When I was a kid my family had an Olds F-85 that comfortably fit me and my 3 sisters in the back seat.
The line about Liberian registration came from a comedian who talked about his dad owning a 1978 Buick, he then paused for the right phrase, Battlestar Galactica.

I'm always looking forward to these build reviews, not least because of the ingenious ways in which the likes of silver Sharpies and gel pens can be used to shortcut the process of highlighting chrome/stainless steel/aluminum details. In fact, I've extended their use into building 1/32 scale aircraft, where I've discovered, for example, that a Silver Sharpie faithfully replicates the natural-metal frames on a P-51B/C canopy: I've also started using various colors of fine-tip (0.2mm) gel pens to replicate switches in cockpits, or the surrounds of instruments; it's so much easier than using a fine-tip paint brush.

Great job Chris! Say what you want about the simplistic style of the older kits, but you never had to fight to get the interior/chassis into the body shell. And the cars always sat square on all 4 wheels. Too often on many of the newer kits I find that I am fussing with the stance, or fighting to get the interior/chassis into the body. I love the older kits!!

Great job on this one, I really love the look of those cars and I remember them from growing up in the 60s. I'm waiting on my Land Rover and I think I will pickup the Chevy Luv pickup and I'm thinking of adding a couple of car kits also. Thanks again and super build, best wishes to you and your family.

That's what I call a classic example of mid-sixties muscle in a full size car. I would really love it if the molds for the convertible kits are around because that's how you could make a custom show car, put it on a turntable and make believe with other models of 1966 cars and call it an auto show display. They really need to dig up the old molds and come out with new reissues of kits so you can go wild with kitbashing, and make stuff they didn't have back in the day.

Good afternoon, when I was a kid i used to build a lot of model kits. I've always had a passion for cars. ' older and customs ' and now as an adult iv restored a couple of my own cars, and customized some also. But i got to give credit to all those model kits. But that's another story. Lol. You did a beautiful job on the Buick, I've always wanted a car like that, to bad i never found a decent one, or i would have built it just like that. The color choice you used on the body is beautiful it's like it was made for the Buick, on a scale from 1- 10. I give it a 20. 👍🤓. Like I said she looks AMAZING, keep up the good work. And keep them videos coming. God bless. And have a great day.
Your buddy. ROBERT FROM CALIFORNIA. 😷👍🖖✌🎉🌮🌮😇.
