    You're one of the few channels that has always stressed the importance of knowing your own limits when it comes to number of fish and tanks, and I'm glad to see that you're making a change that you feel will better your lives and take away some of the burden. I can only imagine how difficult it's going to be deciding which fish to keep and which have to go! This project could help others who are feeling a little overwhelmed, also. Best of luck to you both! 🙂👍

    No regrets, guys! With all those tanks you helped the hobby tremendously by all of the education and species profiles on fish most of us don't consider or encounter. But yes, set it up for enjoyment and not work. I love gallery style tanks as opposed to stacks of tanks. You can enjoy and appreciate it more when you can relax and view it in a gallery setting. I look forward to seeing the changes. Good luck with the project!

    Wow, I didn't realize you had 2 fully stocked rooms, always thought it was only one large room. Do what's best for your marriage, work, and overall life imo. Awesome fish room, will be even better when you have less stress and can enjoy it all that much more.

    Well I won't quit watching just because your taking your fish room back to your dreams. That's what life is all about. Ain't it? And hey, I had a tank spring a leak and had to put a bunch of guppies in my 20 long. I'm talking about 300 guppies. Of course it happened after the fish store was closed. So I had to do some thinking through and make a decision out of sheer need. Time to scale back. So I really do feel your pain. If this decision is going to make your life happier and fuller then don't hesitate. Go for it. I will never stop watching you guys. Especially over something like this. You've given me great advice and helped me alot over the last couple of years, and I'm still learning. So you better believe I'll still be asking you for help.😊 Thank you Jason and Joanna for everything you do for us.

    Honestly I’m glad you’re downsizing. A year ago I cut my number off tanks in half. I felt a huge sense of relief and it allowed me to focus my attention on the remaining tanks. The tanks I have now are in much better condition. I think you’ll be happy with the new direction

  • @BertShackleford

    I have three nano tanks and I think _that_ is a chore!
    In fact, I even reached out to George Farmer for some advice on how to proceed. I may have even mentioned it on this channel too. His advice echoes that of many others - "It's okay to take a break from the hobby and revisit it later on."
    Unfortunately, I think the latter half of that statement is a stretch. If I manage to convince myself into relinquishing my tanks, then I may never return. The problem is that I spent *_years_* scaping and maintaining those tanks and I am quite possessive over them. I somehow manage to get the slowest growing plants to sprout up in such a rapid manner. My buce for instance, is supposed to be a slow grower and yet I have an abundance of it!
    So much extra vegetation, in fact, that I refuse to accept store credit at my local fish store anymore. I simply give it to them as a friendly gesture because I want to see them succeed, even in an environment that cannot sustain such a hobby. Being that they are nano tanks, that means I must do 80% water changes every Wednesday, otherwise known as "Water Change Wednesdays".
    Furthermore, I live in the great state number Forty Eight - Arizona. That means the aquarium hobby is not very eco-friendly in our region. Not to mention, we are getting to a point in our state where keeping fish as a hobby is practically unsustainable. Water being the number one commodity here in the Sonoran Desert which we aptly call "liquid rock".
    Alas, I would like to pass on my tanks to a reputable fish keeper/aquascaper. However, I do not know of anyone here in AZ that I would trust with my delicate tanks and their _very_ specific protocol.
    Sometimes I wish I had never started this hobby again. It would have been better to leave the positive memories of my Father's 55 gallon in place. Rather than picking up where he left off.
    Thankfully, we have a house so the days of moving with fish tanks is over! Moving with fish tanks is _thee worst_ second to moving my old venomous snake collection. Now it's time to move on without the tanks so my wife and I can enjoy each others company even more than we already do.
    Stay classy my friend.

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics
      @PrimeTimeAquatics  Před rokem +1

      I agree with George - at one point I did a video saying the same thing. It's ok to take a step back and revisit it later. I can totally see where you're coming from living in Arizona too!

      @qpqp2339 Před rokem +1

      For what it is worth -- i got my love of aquariums from my dad, but he had to step back from the hobby several times over his life. He had his first aquarium in university, then 10 years later just before I was born to when I was too young to remember, and then another 10 years later. That last time lasted for several years but after an injury (and me not being interested in taking care of his demanding tank as a teen) he had to let go of it. Another 10 years later, he still doesn't have time for it but guess what -- turns out I got into fish keeping, and he has lived vicariously through me, haha.
      It seems like rambling but.. depending on how much you're into it, it might be a hobby that never leaves you completely. You might take on a new approach when you next pick it up. For example, last time my dad picked up the hobby he had built a pond and kept goldfish for the first time, after being a tropical fish guy his last two stints. He also built his own tank that time which he hadn't done before.

More importantly your message has me feeling better about my decision to scale down. I'm not crazy after all lol! Thank you for this video. Although I'm fairly new to the hobby, MTS was starting to hit me. This brought me back to reality, helping me understand the scale of responsibility and work it takes to maintain. I wanted something to enjoy in my basement as I relax, but I found myself spending more time (and money) going from LFS to LFS, seeing something new, researching and trying to convince myself how cool it would be to have, and lying to myself that I could maintain "just one more tank." MTS is real, and it could become a serious problem, taking away the enjoyment and excitement and making it feel like an obligation. So again, thank you.

    Frankly, I don’t know how you do it with all those tanks! I have a 55g, 20g, and 15g plus the random 5G for QT and a 2g to raise daphnia and I hate WC day! Even with your boys helping out, you have an enormous number of tanks. And you’re right - when it becomes a “job” it takes the fun out of it.
    And no matter how many different fish I want, I don’t have the room or the energy for multiple tanks.

    Can’t wait to see how things turn out. I’d go crazy if I had that many tanks. At one point, I had 2 community tanks at 2 different houses and I eventually just decided to merge the two communities together and get rid of the one at my moms house. One of my friends had two 125’s and he got sick of having 2 tanks so he went and got a 300 gallon, put all the fish in there, and then got rid of the 125’s. One or a few big tanks is so much easier than dozens of small ones. In the future, I just plan to have a few 125-180 gallon tanks : one with fancy goldfish, one with community fish, one with African cichlids, and one with South American cichlids of some kind.

    I'm amazed you went into such a lengthy explanation. There is no shame in downsizing. And keeping a few choice tanks that are optimized is almost always a better option, than keeping a multitude of redundant tanks (for hobbyist's, not talking about farms). What you described is a "Job", you may not approach it as such, but it most certainly is. Shrinking and refocusing is proactive choice.
    I know for me personally: focusing on only one or two tanks, but splurging for automation, monitoring systems, and high end fixtures & hardware was a much more enjoyable path. Both as a freshwater hobbyist, and now as a marine hobbyist. It cost about the same as a few dozen tanks. But, the maintenance is drastically slimmed down. And it allowed me to remove my own procrastination and dial in my own care regimes. I'm not saying you should do that; I'm saying there are plenty of us who can relate to your decision process.

    Holy Scha-moly !!! Because one of my philosophies is to 'take your time' please do THAT !!! Take your time. Rule No.#1 Do not move a single tank with anything inside, not even two gallons of water or substrate, wet-vac everything, torque is what ruins seals. There is no Rule #2 just go slow and have a good time. TIP 'Elbow straps' are one of the coolest handiest moving inventions known to mankind. Scary and exciting video.

    I would keep the low boy 50 in the middle it works since you'll still be able to still see all the other tanks if u put that taller tank in the middle it wouldn't look right. But i like the idea of getting rid of a lot of the tanks looks like way to much work keeping care of all those

    Awesome planning and vision of what you want with room adaptions along the way. Personally I just love the real brick background and darker tone of the walls. That Gothic batcavish appearance. But that's just me. I would only add some bright aquashella type of art peices to the existing background. OK I'll shut up. Thank you for sharing your plans and fishroom with us as always.

    Keeping up with all those tanks is not easy. I have four tanks 10g ,29g,15g, and 40 breeder. I do water changes every one to two weeks. They are in a two bedroom. Love to have more but I know it would be too much. Love your channel and good luck.

    One of the hardest parts of the hobby is admitting you have too much on your hands and downsizing. I unfortunately am in a similar situation. I have 9 tanks in my bedroom alone, on top of 2 in the livingroom, 3 in the garage, and 2 in my brothers room. When I get my own place (hopefully in these next few months!) I will have to downsize to 6 tanks at the max. One large, and the rest all have to be 20 gallons or under. I have put so much time and money (mainly money) into my hobby and I know I won't make much in return. I'm hoping I can combine a lot of my tanks and scape supplies, I'd hate to part with it all

    I don't envy you for all of this work coming up...lol...honestly, but best of luck. Tank tear downs are so much work as you know; I'm sure. Really looking forward to the revised content, though! I hope this gives a good glimpse into what is really involved with a real fish room for someone who's contemplating it.

    Respect for understanding not only your own limits, but having respect for your kid's time, especially as they enter a new chapter in their life. Even though you said your son is still interested in helping , i really respect that you arent taking advantage of that. I dont think its wrong for a young adult to help their parents, absolutely not! But i think there is a difference between accepting your adult childs help for something that is affects livelihood (for example, running a business or helping in health related manners) vs a hobby (incl taking care of pets the parents arent equpped to take care of). I hate to see this beautiful fish room go, but im certain whatever comes after will be just as great! Thanks for all your knowledge over the years.

    Change is inevitable. Doing it while manageable is always well-advised. Good Luck, hoping all turns out well. We will be watching. It's also gives your viewers something new to see almost every week. Has everyone heard about the guy that added on a basement extension to build and house his 33' (10 m) long dream tank? That's starting to shape up.

I’m sure things will turn out beautifully but I’m feeling a little sad. Guess over the years I’ve lived vicariously through you guys. Best wishes! ❤❤❤

    I’m sure your gallery will look great. I have 19 tanks and I know what it takes to maintain them. I want to setup
    A seahorse tank soon and will have to take a few down to do that. I hate doing it but my tanks are all nano tanks. I have 50
    Gallon sea clear tank for my seahorses. I’ve wanted to get them again and to do that I need room. Sad but true. You gallery will be amazing. Thank you for your sincerity
