  • There aren't many authentic sailing canoes left in Fiji; there are just two in the Island of Faluga, southern Lau. I was lucky to get a sail with its builder, Meli, and was blown away by the experience and hugely impressed by Meli's skills.

    Beautiful film! Boats may be different but bailers are universal! Thank you for this gift, rest in peace.

    Hi Maunie,
    Thanks for taking video from Fulaga. I'm from Fulaga and we are also venturing into projects in trying to get funding and support for the preservation of canoe making in Fulaga. Grateful, if you can allow us to use your footage for our proposal and promotions.

      Just returned from 7 weeks in Fulaga where we helped with the build and launch of Meli's canoe with his brothers Mini and Alifereti. Have a look at www.maunieofardwall.blogspot.com for photos and we'll post a new video soon

      Youd be best off building a catamaran it is the ship that evolved from this model. We have been using this model in the pacific for over 10.000 years and even used it to cross the pacific ocean and indian ocean.

      yes the concept of Moana was copied from this canoe

    • @laitiatemo5054
      @laitiatemo5054 Před 2 lety

      We had canoes larger than the Moana one. One was named the Rusaivanua built over seven years and was 36 metres in length and had the capacity to carry 200 warriors and 40 seamen. The warriors and seamen totalling to 240 had took with them 8 cows and pigs and some other provisions on their crossing from Vanualevu to Vitilevu. It's called a Fijian Drua. It was believed that canoes predating the Rusaivanua is far larger than it. The Rusaivanua was only one that was ever documented in our archives.
