Thanks for sharing your knowledge. It allowed me to bring back to life a 505-2 gifted to me and gave me the confidence to do my first motor and bearing lube. Thanks again. Colin.
Very common issue with these. It seems just about *every* Dual owner put it into storage when CD appeared.. then *decades* later vinyl comes back into fashion and they wonder why their deck no longer works.
Wow! It's a labor of love! Thank you for this video. I have a CS 506, which I believe it's very similar to the 505-2. I'll have to plan this project for a long weekend!
THANK YOU for making these videos. Just picked up a very clean 505-2 for $50 from a local owner that hasn't been used in years and will definitely need servicing, but I have no worries now that I'll be able to get it working good as new again with the help of these tutorials. :)
"hasn't been used in years".. this goes for just about *all* of them it seems.. it is so annoying the way peoples' indecision leads to these beautiful decks just sitting in limbo for decades.. "I no longer use it but cannot be bothered selling it either" 🙄
That unit has some amazing engineering. Way better than the average turntable that's sold today. Great quality. Now we have a lot of over priced plastic junk, unless you had the cash to go high end.
@@TurntableGuy I would love to see a blind A/B test done between a 505 and some ultra high-end bling-bling deck which costs as much as a Lamborghini.. see if anyone can tell the difference..
People like you make the internet great, I have no knowledge of turntable engineering, but you helped me to find and fix the problem that was preventing my 505 from starting.
New episode! Great job. Knowing so little about Duals, I found this really educational. I still don't comprehend how 1) you found incredible deals on all these turntables and 2) how you learned how to service so many complex mechanisms. Really cool! Think I'm going to stick with direct drive, given that they generally seem less complicated to service (???), but it's good to know the ins and outs of a belt-driven mechanism in case I ever make a switch.
Gotta keep an eye out for deals (which are getting harder to find since turntables are more in demand. I worked in an electronics repair shop in my late teens and learned a lot from some very good techs. DD is definitely easier to maintain.
Thank you for the excellent video, I am going to service my cs505-2 which I bought new about 40 yrs ago. Keep up the good work Best Regards Mark Kildare Ireland
Absolutely brilliant videos - thank you so much. I followed your instructions along with the vid. Great! I had exactly the same little challenges as you and hearing/watching you struggle to undo motor boxes etc made me confident I was doing it right as I had the same struggles!
Thanks for your excellent videos. Please Can you help me I was following this on my dial 505 when a small thin silver metal piece with a notch at each end dropped out as I took the turntable off of the plinth. I cannot see anything like it on your videos or where it has come from. The service has otherwise gone smoothly Unfortunately utube won’t let me paste a photo of it. It’s 1.25 inches x .25 inches Do you know what it is? Thanks David
Great in-depth video for the 505-2. I was able to follow along and service mine and my son's turntables. They are like new now! Do you have any insight on how to adjust the pitch on a Dual CS514??
I know I'm late to the party, but I just acquired one of these, and I wonder how that design doesn't introduce noticeable rumble, from the plastic sub-platter to the split pulley for speed adjustment... I guess I'll find out once I get a belt for it.
Thanks for this, I have a 505-2 same as yours, my problem is when I play a 7"Record the arm lifts and stops too early, with a 12" record. it's fine. is there an adjustment I can make?? 🙏 thanks again.. 🙏
Brilliant video, thanks for this. My dual 505-4 has a problem when the auto stop mechanism doesn't disengage, meaning it turns off when I try to start it up again. I've looked at the mechanism and can't see any obvious issues. Any ideas on what to try?
What a great guide! Now I have to decide whether to dive in or hand mine over to my friend who owns and operates a workshop. Mine is a $30 estate sale find that sounded great when I got it home. It needs this type of service, though. When it’s running (but not playing) I hear a light friction that I assume is a lack of lubrication. It has a Pickering XV-15 625e cartridge; is that appropriate for this TT/tone arm? I have read that this arm was designed with a certain Ortofon cartridge in mind and originally came with that Ortofon.
Thank you. The Picketing sure sounds fine to me; just wondered if that’s the optimal choice, or whether there’s anything that recommends against non-Ortofon cartridges for any reason.
I have dual cs 505-1 (1982year). Noise level -54 dB during playback (when the needle is not on the vinyl - there is no noise), probably the noise from the motor, the disc rod was lubricated. Is it possible to reduce the noise?
amazing. so helpful. I have serviced my 505-3 but it takes a long time (10 seconds) to reach speed. have dknw the motor service/lube. any thoughts? thanks again. really fantastic 👍
Hi, I just picked up a Dual 721 Direct Drive table for a song, it just has one issue, the strobe light is burnt out. Was wondering if you could tell me how, or maybe point me to a video on how to replace the strobe light on it. I sure would appreciate it. Thanks
I would first check to see if the neon bulb is burned out or if it is getting the correct voltage. Check ebay for a new bulb. It's just two wires and you're done.
Hi there, I have a 505-3 it hasn't been used in a few years. It will play for a few minutes and then a very loud noise will start coming from it. If I move the rca jacks it will stop temporarily but will come back in minute. Loud almost static noise, not just a hum. Can the cables be replaced? On the 505-3, do the wires go through the arm or plug in? When I loosen and pull headshell wires come behind it.
The RCA plugs are probably shot. Just cut off the old ones and solder in replacements. If you want to replace the entire cable, there is a demarcation board within the turntable which connects the RCA cables to the tonearm wires.
Can you recommend where to find the belts or the ones comparable to the originals? I have had mine in storage and prior to that they were already in bad shape but now that I have the space for it I want to get it up and running.

Folks, any opinions on how you can remove the cable stress relief mechanism from the metal bracket, and then reuse it when replacing the ground and RCA cables? thanks in advance in case anyone can help.
I'll tell you right now - it's a pain in the butt. You have to squeeze the back side of the strain relief and pull like hell. Be prepared to mangle the strain relief with your pliers. Don't use a thicker cable for the replacement, because you'll never get it back into the strain relief or the metal bracet.
@@TurntableGuy Thank you, this was helpful and i did bend the metal a bit but was able to get it back and use a more simple relief rubber that works better. One more question: How to best utilize the built in pitch markers on the platter when there is no built in strobe light? thx. steve
You can download an app on your phone and probably use the builtinmarkers on the turntable. Just search on strobe. Or you can even got another app thats easier, search for rpm turntable. Then just put your phone and read the rmp on the phone 👍

very informative!
Excellent, thank you.

Any tips or pointers on how to add new silicone to the arm down. I have one that comes down too fast.

Great video ,very educational. How long is the cassette belt you used ?
Great video, thanks! What size of cassette belts were you using there?
CS = complete system, as you said. means it came with a plinth.
Good to know.
Great in-depth video for the 505-2. I was able to follow along and service mine and my son's turntables. They are like new now!
Do you have any insight on how to adjust the pitch on a Dual CS514??
The 514's pitch controls are hidden behind the faceplate on the plinth. Watch my videos on the 515 - they'll explain how to disassemble the unit.
I know I'm late to the party, but I just acquired one of these, and I wonder how that design doesn't introduce noticeable rumble, from the plastic sub-platter to the split pulley for speed adjustment... I guess I'll find out once I get a belt for it.

Yes. Download the service manual for the 505-1 from vinylengine.com

I replace the capacitors as well and wet sand and polish the lid.

Grease has hardened somewhere on the start lever. Disassemble it and clean all pivot points then re-lubricate.
@@TurntableGuy Thanks for the reply, I'll try that

There is no law that says you can't run the Pickering. It's true that the ULM arm was designed to run Ortofon ULM or OM series cartridges.
Thank you. The Picketing sure sounds fine to me; just wondered if that’s the optimal choice, or whether there’s anything that recommends against non-Ortofon cartridges for any reason.
I heard that same kind of sound from mine. A couple drops of oil in the motor and now it runs completely silent and also a lot cooler than before.

Try a full motor lubrication service like in the video.
Excellent video very well explained. Could you tell me the wattage size of the 47uH axial inductor on the motor pcb ?

amazing. so helpful. I have serviced my 505-3 but it takes a long time (10 seconds) to reach speed. have dknw the motor service/lube. any thoughts?

Either the motor is getting weak (doubtful), or it needs to be torn apart and lubricated as in the video (more likely).
Probably the belt that's old and slips in the start sequence.
@@johansandman1688 Yes belt is the main suspect, another clue is if it will not change speed

This is just a guess, but I think it may be part of the center spindle bearing.
Turns out it’s part of the speed regulator switch nechanism. Back in place now!
