Live Aid was a duel-venue concert held simultaneously at Wembley Stadium, in London (72,000 people), and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia (100,000) that was held to raise funds for Ethiopia which was experiencing a 2-year drought. It was broadcast worldwide to an audience of 1.9 BILLION people. There were over 75 acts that performed in 20-minute slots. Queen stole the show.
Paul Gambaccini, who was part of the BBC broadcasting team at Live Aid, recalled the awe among other superstar musicians watching backstage. “Everybody realized that Queen was stealing the show,” said Gambaccini. These were the very words Elton John uttered when he rushed into Mercury’s trailer after the set. “You bastards, you stole the show,” joked the charismatic star.
“Queen smoked ’em. They just took everybody. They walked away being the greatest band you’d ever seen in your life, and it was unbelievable,” said Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters. “And that’s what made the band so great; that’s why they should be recognized as one of the greatest rock bands of all time because they could connect with an audience.”

Freddie had laryngitis the week before the concert and his doctor recommended that he cancel his appearance and rest his voice. He ignored the advice and went on to make rock history even though he later said it was like singing with shards of glass in his throat. It was his Mom he was blowing a kiss to. His parents were frequently at his performances, but due to the heat and the size of the crowd they elected to watch from home. It wasn’t only Queen who realized they had been sensational.

There was 72,000 in Wimbledon concert and 89,484 in the Philadelphia concert. They were shown simultaneously with world wide TV coverage. They didn't decide till the last minute to do the show. Queen rehearsed over and over with a big clock to get the timing exactly right. Each performer had 20 mins. There were 75 acts between both shows.

@@acetheautisticroyalnirgizer My thoughts for the last (far too many!) years. The Beatles revolutionised music in a way we hadn't seen since Mozart, and then Queen took up the Baton. The genius of Queen (which the Beatles didn't quite manage, much as I love them) was that they took very, very complicated studio tracks, and yet gave an almost identical version of them on stage. Someone to Love is the prime example (Montreal 1981 is the best ever!) but all of their live concert performances were almost indistinguishable from the studio version. And that is real, real talent. No autotune or anything! (Same applies to The Beatles too - and they couldn't even hear themselves playing, yet are rock-solid in every live performance!). So yeah, The Beatles and Queen - the two at the top of the tree, and rightly so.

I have watched this concert so many times and watched it the day it happened, everyone did. Every time I watch this show I feel like I am there in the audience. When Freddie blows a kiss during Bohemian Rhapsody, that is for his mom who never liked that song because it made her sad. His mom and sister came to almost all Queen's shows in London. His mom continued to support Queen and its members even after Freddie died. Jer was like the "Band Mom." Brian and Roger would be sure to invite her to everything that was in her local area and she would usually want to go. This particular copy of this concert cuts off the end of "Champions" which is disappointing but the rest of the show is great. Thank you for reacting to this great set.

Hopefully you’ll react to many more of their great songs and performances. One of my favorites is ‘White Queen’ performed in 1975 at the Christmas performance Hammersmith Odeon show on December 24. Sorry, just found you; so, I’m late to the Comment Section! I’m a 66 y/o Glamma. You seem to enjoy the background of things. And, I’m a Trivia sponge, so here goes: They had just completed a Tour a month b4. So, they went & rented a Stadium to practice the performance. He ended up with a Throat Infection & the Doctor highly recommended he not do it bc he might lose his musical ability. He said no! Can you tell he had a severe throat infection? Most people think he was drinking booze from the cups bc on the piano. He’s drinking Honey & Tea. His command of the Audience was more than coincidence it was miraculous. Considering there were so many people there the sound was getting absorbed through them. So the people @ the back we’re following his hand gestures bc the actual sound hadn’t even reached them b4 the next sound was coming @ them. Go back & watch what his hands are doing & what the Audience is doing. NEXT: Radio Gaga is celebrating Radio bc M-TV is just getting started. LADY GAGA was a huge Freddie Fam growing up, so That was where she came up with HER STAGE NAME! You have to listen to the words to really understand the meaning. Most of us didn’t have a clue what a Band looked like unless we saw them in Person!
NEXT-MICROPHONE. At sometime along the way a Microphone Stand broke, so that was the only spilt second solution they could come up with. He realized the freedom he had to move, dance, & engage the Audience.
NEXT MICHAEL JACKSON & ELVIS CONNECTION on Song THING CALLED LOVE: It was written as his homage to Elvis-Freddie was a big fan. But, he just wasn’t sure about the song bc he didn’t want to taint Elvis. SO, he played it for Michael J. (Yes, they were friends!). And Michael told him he HAD TO, he said “Freddie, you have to”! (Can’t you just see that!?).
NEXT FREDDIE’s VOICE. HE HAD 4 extra teeth so that’s the reason he had such an overbite. He had the ability to naturally flow from Octave to Octave. It was a natural progression, for him.
SCIENTIFICALLY: Test were done on his Voice. He was able to use his Throat muscles on either side of his vocal cords. Which is normally seen in some Opera Singers. His Vocal Range was from Low Bass F, to High Soprano F! They were extremely surprised to find out that he could go from about 92Hz to 784Hz, effortlessly! See ACTUAL REPORT BELOW:
nyone who has listened to a Queen track knows that Freddie has a unique ability that still has not been truly replicated since. His ability to blend highs, lows and mid range notes cohesively and with immense precision. This skill was due to the fact that Freddie was able to create faster vibrato and harmonics than any other singer at the time. Not only this, he was able to shift through registers effortlessly. Although he naturally held a baritone voice, he primarily sang as a tenor and of course had no problem then shifting into soprano parts. One study on Freddie’s vocal range even confirmed that he was able to vary from about 92.2 Hz to 784 Hz, meaning he was reliably able to hit notes from the booming low of F#2 to the high pitch G5 - that covers a full three octaves!
LAST FUN FACT: His Lead Guitarist is playing on a Guitar he & his Father made. When he first starting to learn they were too poor to afford a high end guitar. So, they just made one! The included some “extras” that would normally have to be separate instruments to get all those features (think Concerts when you see guitarist changing Guitars depending on the Song….that’s why he didn’t)!
I’m sorry to take up your Valuable Time, and I thank you. You need anymore Trivia I’m your G’Ma go to. My Brain is full, especially with music, & believe it or not Sports!
(When he is waving his arm it is to tell the cameramen which way he is going bc he’s moving around so much. And, “We Will Rock You”, is actually a Prelude to “We Are The Champions”. It is actually all 1 Song!)
LEAD GUITARIST: Brian May’s family couldn’t afford a Guitar so he & his Dad made it from an old Cabinet. Because they were making it there are a lot of extra features that he wanted. It is truly a “one of a kind”!

Hammer to fall was written by the guitar hero - - Brian May. Better than any other band in the world - some say. The concert were the best rock concert - ever - has not been surpassed. - They had not their own sound system, no lights - no costumes as they used to - they only had the stage and their instruments. -and they only had 20 minutes as had everybody else. There was this concert in -Wembley with 72.000 in the audience and 100.000 at JFK stadium in Philadelphia - with screens so it was possible to see what happened at the other venue - and time to change stage. All the rest of us sat at home and saw it on television via 13 satellites - an estimate of 1.9 billion viewers all over the world - I was in Denmark. The purpose was to get money (Live AID) to the famine in africa. I guess that others have written about it - but you got the "wrong" version - use Queen's official version - that is not cut - and will never be blocked - they want us to listen to their music 🤩. Thank you for a good reaction - I enjoyed it. And remember to listen to 9.48 pm!! There is not such thing as Freddie Mercury and Queen - - Queen is a band of 4 musicians - . There still is Queen but Freddie died and John left the musicbusiness, but Roger and Brian still play as Queen with 3 other musicians - a drummer, a bass player and Spike Edney on keys. He was the 5.th Queen - he was backstage playing the piano to make it possible for Freddie to perform front stage. He was there at Live Aid. Brian and Roger did a few gigs - and they made soloalbums with themselves as lead singers and then they met Paul Rodgers and toured around the world with him for 2-3 years as Queen+ Paul Rodgers. And they thought that Queen was over - but was contacted by many friends who had heard a young guy called Adam Lambert in American Idol. They were invited to play We are the champions with the two finalists - Adam was the runner op - - they had good chemistry - and after a year they went touring - now for 12 years for sold out venues all over the World - Starting in Ukraine in front of 300.000!! There is no voice like Adam's and he is capable to sing the songs - And he is not Freddie - and does not try to but he has the stage magnetism . A lot of Freddie lovers hate Adam - - those who have seen the shows have never seen anything like it. You can taste it by seeing Q+AL at the Isle of Wight festival 2016 performing "Who wants to live forever" dedicated to the victims of a mass shooting the night before. As it says in "Hammer to fall": "just surrender and it won't hurt at all" . They tour North America this fall.

There's no option to send you a private message, so I decided to dm you here. First of all thank you for letting us know about your asperger's syndrome! I'm sure there are many people with this illness being so happy about your sincerity. I'm German, I don't have Asperger, but I'm working for an organisation that cares about these people. Let me recommend you a French movie I saw a couple of years ago, with this topic. Original Frech title is "Le goût des merveilles ", German title is "Birnenkuchen mit Lavendel". I hope you have the chance to watch it with English dubbing or subtitles. It's such a wonderful movie, playing in the French area of "Provence", so subtle, approaching the Asperger's syndrome topic so beautilly - you have to watch it!
