What kind of help do you believe he needs? I've never seen a guy who seemed so comfortable and content who is in jail. By his own admission, he's not depressed (which is more than what a lot of people who are 100% free can say). He's clearly eating well, clean, taken care of. HE'S SERVING TIME FOR A BUNCH OF CRIMES HE COMMITTED AND LAWS HE'S BROKEN. That's how justice works and he seems quite content where he is and with his situation. What makes you think the guy has no hope? He claimed to have not even gone through withdrawal when he was incarcerated. Dude is 100% fine...better off than some people I know who work 60 hours per week just to pay rent and utilities.

Tread carefully so as not to fall into the trap of letting your kindness be exploited by those looking to take advantage of it, because they will. The former prison guard in Alabama, Vicky White, found out the hard way and lost her life because of it. I used to teach literacy and GED classes in a prison on a volunteer basis and it took me a little while to realize that I was being 'sized up' every moment by many of the inmates just to see how far they could 'move the goal line' despite my being warned about it from the very start by the guards and the administrators who ran the program. It's amazing how subtle it can be, but it was happening from the very moment I started. Some of it was an "alpha" dynamic where the inmates wanted to establish their place in classroom hierarchy. I was technically the guy 'in charge" for the classroom sessions although I wasn't looking to show some sort of 'dominance". I just wanted to teach the classes in an orderly fashion for those who truly wanted to better themselves, which was most of the class. Just about everyone had a story that they were innocent or a victim of circumstance, or mistaken identity. Really? multiple convictions for different offenses over several years were all wrong? Some even tried to get me to smuggle items into or out of the prison for them like a phone, or a letter or some basic commissary items. Once I established the proper boundaries in a firm, but respectful way, everything went smoothly. The fact that I didn't try to jam anyone up for even asking me to do those things (which can result in disciplinary action to the inmate just for attempting it) also went a long way in establishing a rapport, but I also made it clear that they were not to ever ask again. Stay safe.

@@KayFabe87 this is wisdom right here. I've often considered teaching the incarcerated. But I know myself. Even as a retired college instructor, I know I'd be manipulable. At some point, someone would get to me in just the right way, I'd feel sorry for them, & that would be it. I'd be right there breaking the law, right beside them, to smuggle something in or whatever. Your comment made me to at last take this option off the table for work. Thanks

Honestly I never understand on these Kentucky and WV interviews when people say they had nothing to do so they turned to drugs. I grew up in a small southern town before the internet. There was literally only 2 things to do in my town which was church and watching Friday night high school football. Church back then was not an entertainment center like it is now. You went in, sat very still and quietly listened to a sermon, prayed and sang hymns. There were no parties and games for the youth like today. We had no shopping centers only a gas station, post office and small grocery store. So people had to find ways to entertain themselves. And there were zillions of ways people could entertain themselves. From the beginning of time people had to find their own way to occupy their time and entertain themselves without needing drugs. It seems like only recent generations need manufactured entertainment handed to them or they don’t know what to do. I don’t know what happened to these recent generations that made them lose the natural instinct to entertain themselves.
Interestingly this guy seems to be able to keep himself entertained in prison and what’s there? But he can’t figure it out on the outside. Somehow as society we have messed up our children to no longer figure out for themselves how to entertain themselves.
Maybe we have over fed them with entertainment. When i was a kid if a kid said “ I’m bored “ a parent would say “I’ll find you something to do “ and magically kids would quickly find a solution to their problem. We figured it out. Kids can’t figure it out anymore apparently and that’s disturbing.

As I saw a couple others have already mentioned I, too, was a little bummed Dude didn't get to make his shoutouts and it was the very first thought that I had, as the video was fading out. I felt for him throughout the video, so many bad choices on top of the system that likes to keep you in it and that usually gives you just enough rope to keep on hangin' yourself, figuratively, obviously, was more than enough, for, this young man polite, respectful and who seems nice enough to spend most of his LIFE locked away like an animal in a CAGE! Even missing his mother's funeral, but, he was a flight risk as they had caught him on the run sleeping, when trying to get his friend to get him away, from all the heat, but it landed him in the frying pan instead. And I know it might not've been much and probably seems stupid to some people but the shout outs he'd hoped to give at the end, would've been a bright spot in his dark existence...and would have put a smile and some joy in his, and his friends lives, and upon their faces. Made them happy even for just a second or minute, but more importantly made them feel a little human again, he coulda felt some slight dignity, and that another person out there, actually cared enough to let him do that little thing, for him and his friends to feel that tiny wee bit of victory...in a life, where they've felt, they've gotten the short END of the stick or always come up snakes eyes, or flunk out, or end up bustin' everytime when so many others always seem to hit, or land, on blackjack, or jackpot, or, at least, they do well enough to keep on playin' or stay in the game a little longer; that one, little gesture would've meant so much to him, and his, and, even, strangely enough, me, for some godawful reason...get out, BUD, and get your life straightened out so that you can actually start living it again, and be back with your true family, where, you obviously belong, whether or not if you're actually deserving of being there...or not! You deserve better than you'd gotten or'd allowed yourself, to suffer through. STAY STRONG! NEVER GIVE UP! AND ALWAYS REMAIN HOPEFUL...HAVING A POSITIVE OUTLOOK, WHENEVER POSSIBLE! I AND SOME OTHERS BELIEVE IN YOU, AND'LL BE PRAYING FOR YOU TO TURN OVER A NEW LEAF! GOOD LUCK, SPEAD LOVE, & DROWN OUT THE HATE THAT PLAGUES YOUR LIFE AND SO MANY OTHER LIVES IN THERE! YOU CAN FIND...AND YOU DO DESERVE...A CHANCE AT NORMAL LIFE, AGAIN AFTER YOU'VE DONE YOUR TIME AND GOTTEN BACK OUT INTO SOCIETY, SCOOBY! DON'T EVER FORGET THAT! :D

He admitted he was institutionalized. My best friend’s stepson and my other friend’s brother are institutionalized too. Both men would do their time, come out and enjoy the outside life for a bit then did something that would take them back to prison until they had sentences that won’t allow them out. Boy he is telling the truth about how bad dope is over there. I go over every chance I get and ride dirt bikes around 3 counties on the mountain tops and ridges... as far back into the wilderness as it gets. About 100 mile loop. Been doing that over 20 years and I can see how it has changed. I love East KY because it is like going to another country and stepping back in time. Going east once you leave London and pass manchester... its like another country. However, the people are stuck somewhere between a poor but wholesome past trying to move into the future with access to all the bad things the world has to offer but very few of the good things.

I went to Summer School, in 1991, at Oneida Baptist Institute. I remember working the mowing crew , which every attendant was required to have a job for a few hours after classes. Also, that was the last private school in the state that allowed corporal punishment at the time. If kids were bad, they lined up for a paddling after Dinner. Looking back, I was there by choice, but a lot of kids were there by court order. It was a very small town, and the school was the main source of work for the locals. The next closest town, that I recall, was Manchester. Only being there for the summer, the only time I saw anywhere outside Oneida, for those 3 months, was going to and from Oneida to attend my summer classes.
