  • If your hips pop when exercising, it can be a little disconcerting.
Matt talks about how his groin will occasionally pop when throwing high kicks. He shares his views on one possible medical explanation that his doctor recently gave him and why it doesn't make sense!
There are many theories around snapping and popping in the hips, but it's important to keep in mind that this is an area of relatively new investigation, and the answers you get may not always make sense.
One theory about hip snapping and popping suggests that the femur actually dislocates from the socket! Watch the video to find out more...

A therapist once spent 15 minutes showing me that my body could pick up the energy of a certain colour. So my least favourite colour would show a decreased range of motion in a my joints. And my preferred colours increased range of motion. He held a single coloured item behind my back so I couldn't see it and then tested shoulder range of motion. I went along with what he said and smiled in amazement when he showed very slight improvement in range of motion. But really I was just laughing inside whilst feeling my intelligence had been insulted. At the end of the session I asked if wearing my favourite coloured clothes would help he said it probably would.
    I never returned
Cost £70 gbp a session too

I am really tall and very very stiff on the hips. I always hear popping sounds when trying to do the roundhouse or kick high. The last 3-4 months I've been doing mobility drills almost daily, and strengthening exercises for all the muscles involved in kicking, stability + careful stretching etc. Popping does not seem to go away, however range of motion and stability slowly but steadily improve. Great video and inspiring for people like me who face such problems !!

Doctors are notoriously clueless about sport-related issues.... and many of them prefer (us) to sit down rather than continue to exercise... Stopping moving is NOT a solution.
Arthritis?!?! I have often heard "wear and tear" as a diagnosis for 20-something year olds (who are not high level athletes or gymnasts). Yeah right, and what a disempowering option anyway!
However, I have many colleagues that are second dan of this or that martial art and many of them have knee issues. So the fact that martial arts have been practised for thousands of years is not a guarantee of safety. I do agree with you that improving body functioning will improve your symptoms (perhaps get rid of them).

this is literally true. Years ago, in my mid twenties, a doctor told me that I would just have to deal with the knee problems I was facing as that was just the 'consequence of doing lots of sports when you;re young' - thankfully, I;ve since learned that this is BS and I have taken the necessary steps to strengthen my knees and they are now much stronger than they were almost 10 years ago. Thankfully, I did not heed my doctors advice on this occassion! And several other for that matter

It took me years to get this range of motion back, actually, and the solutions were extremely unique to me, I think. But in general the most important thing is to realize that your body has to learn how to control the position. You can't just go at full intensity into it without proper preparation. The isometric work you'll find in the program can also be applied to kick positions - so keep that in mind!

When I was a teenager, I had an incident early in parkour where I landed badly and felt/heard a loud pop/crunch on a very bad landing. It was super painful but it eventually went away. However, I noticed that I had less mobility in my right leg for roundhouse kicks unless I purposefully kicked really hard or stretched my hips on my right side really deeply until I felt a pop. After I would do that, I felt completely fine and had the full range of motion, (it wasn’t painful at all). After being very sedentary for years, I can no longer do that without pain most of the time but I still feel pain/discomfort plus the feeling that the hip needs to pop, but I can’t get it to do that anymore (possibly due to less flexibility). When I can actually pop it and experience no pain it feels amazing and like I have increased rom again, but most of the time I can’t. I’m wondering how I can force that pop in a non painful way

If I move my leg outwards and lift the leg again, I don't hear the sound. There is no pain, but do you know what this might be? I also have patellar maltracking which is not resolving itself by strengthening the VMO and glutes and I think this may be linked. I also sit during the day more than most people. Thanks!

Chloe Morman I do kickboxing and hamstring stretches (touching your toes) seem to have done the trick for me. Sadly, in my research for this, I have not found a cure-all, but going back to the basics always fixes problems for me. Pay attention to how you kick your leg up; think about what makes your hip pop. Study the anatomy of a leg, is it the bone out of place? Are there muscles or tendons pulling right there? Can you massage or stretch them? Try to find the best personal fix for you.

@@ሕያው i would say mostly. I dont have pain on the outside of my hips anymore except in super deep or super high kick positions. I can kick as high as Matt in that video without pain though, But i still feel tightness. I havent really been practicing much or trying to go deeper for a year or so. But i do maintenance every day. Mostly just by incorporating deep positions into my daily routine, like using a floor desk to gently stretch while working. And my body seems to understand how to open up quicker now while stretching so it doesn't take as long to "warm up" for a work out. It feels much easier to maintain pain free motion than trying to get it back in the first place. That part was frustrating but also a fun new adventure in movement. Lots to explore. But hang in there. Progress is slow but progress none the less. I dont do so much tissue work these days but its amazing how much it helped me open up. I was doing it every second i could back then.
