  • One of my favourite things to do is lace up the skates and go for a rip around the rink a few times. I know I'm nowhere near the best but it's so much fun every year! So let's take a look back at the history of Ice skates!

@@hendawg7boss40 It's part of the evolution. Protestant British Toronto, the majority, preferred the color blue, while Catholics, particularly the Irish, preferred green. The owners made the final choice, with Conn Smythe coloring his Leafs blue. (Ironically, the poor backward soul that he was, he didn't support Canada's new Maple Leaf flag, preferring a British naval Ensign).

I had CCM tack goalie skates back in the 70s and 80s, with kangaroo pouch leather insoles. They were good, but heavy. I remember when the Lang hinged molded plastic skate came out and how much lighter it was. Can only imagine how light they are now with nanomaterials and carbon fiber, not to mention improvement in steel manufacturing. Go to the Hockey Hall of Fame and look at what the original stars skated on and the technical revolution comes into perspective.

Modern hockey skates are just absurd with how hard the boots are . Prior to 2003 I never had an issue with lace bite or comfort. I get it's for protection and energy transfer etc., but I like my feet and ankles to do the majority of the work. I use a pair of Bauers from 1999 primarily, and I have such a better feel and connection with the ice than I do with my modern skates. They are so much more comfortable because the boot moves with your foot. And, I'm sure the leather boots from the 60's & 70's are that much more comfortable than my 90's boots.

I was wondering when and where and why people decided one day to strap bits of metal to a boot and make it into a beautiful as well as a speedy art form.. as someone who one day put on a pair of skates and liked it back more than 20 years ago, I didn't really think about, until now that is, why anyone would venture onto ice and speed around with grace..it's not like the gracefulness is automatic for everyone, you know! I even think it counter-intuitive to do the things we do.. and yet we do them.. Thank you for giving me a clue how far back my hobby goes. :)

Glad you gave a shoutout to Speed Skates, however that is one of 2 types of Speed Skates: Long Track (AKA Clap Skates), and Short Track, I personally do Short Track and with them, the blade is fixed to the boot and held with a tubular steel bar, mine are 17 Inches long, Long Track skates like what you had are only fixed in the front, with a hinge and spring loaded mechanism, allowing the full blade to be in contact with the ice for longer
