  • Have you ever wondered, how the Tiptronic transmission or the gear selector works?
    All about the gear selector in modern Audi lineup ranging from small A4 to flagship models like Q7 or new A8. The yacht style selector is very sleek looking yet practical in the way it's designed.
    in the second part of the video, I will try to explain the second generation of ZF`s great 8-speed automatic transmission found in this particular generation of Q7 in its second interaction.
    In this video u can (hopefully) find out what you have been looking for, enjoy!

      Yes sure, it is the same functions as the paddles under the steering wheel. It's when you want to shift manually. When you want to return to drive than move the shifter back to D. If you have some other questions than let me know 😀

    Can this kinda gear selector be retrofitted on a 2012 A6 (C7)?

    • @SamuelDrives
      @SamuelDrives  Před rokem

      No unfortunately not, this is electopneumatic, the older A6 is mechanical.

    Hi, many thanks for an informative video. Can you please let me know if I've understood it correctly. When in D mode and stationary clutch and transmission are decoupled from the engine for efficientcy reasons, but when you take foot off the brake pedal they're connected again and the card drives off? My Audi Q7 2018 also does that, but this "lag" causes the car to roll back slightly if stopped at an incline or if stopped at level ground it just doesn't start driving for a second which to me is very uncomfortable, unexpected and ruins my driving experience. I've noticed that if I put in S mode (either setting engine/gearbox to Dynamic in Drive Select or by rocking the gear lever down again) this "decoupling" doesn't happen anymore and the car starts driving the instant you take the foot off the brake pedal. Can you please let me know if this noticeable moment is fine or should it be so quick and smooth that the car shouldn't roll backwards and the driver shouldn't feel that this is happening. Pardon for such a long comment, but I'm hopeful you can get back to me. Thank you again for your videos, I've seen others too, good job!

      @SamuelDrives  Před 3 lety

      Many thanks for your kind words. So if I understand correctly you have problem with the roll back. Do you have a button for the Auto holding feature next to the e-parking brake? If so it should solve your troubles. Sorry for a late response

      @@SamuelDrives Many thanks for getting back to me. Since writing my comment I've been to two Audi dealerships here in UK and both told me that the behaviour that I'm observing of the transmission decoupling itself from the engine when stationary (which causes the roll back) is by design and perfectly normal. For me personally it ruins the driving experience and is uncomfortable. Thank you for your suggestion of engaging the auto brake hold, but unfortunately to me, this feature is also uncomfortable as it engages itself in the unexpected moment. For example when approaching an intersection and you're creeping towards very slowly, I found that the car decouples the transmission at that point or would engage brakes if I had that auto-hold feature enabled. I noticed that this "decoupling of transmission" doesn't happen when in "S" mode but then you wouldn't want to drive your car in that mode all the time. I'm just dissapointed that this can't be turned off in normal driving mode. Sorry for rambling on, just surpised that nobody else finds this characteristic of the car uncomfortable.

    • @SamuelDrives
      @SamuelDrives  Před 3 lety

      @@airestonia That is strange behavior you are describing. Our Q7 does not roll backwards at all and definitely should not do that. I would know, as I work at factory where Q7, Q8 and Cayenne are assembled and none of them behave as you say. Perhaps try another vehicle from your dealership just to see if they have the same issue you are describing. And do you use start stop or not?

    • @airestonia
      @airestonia Před 3 lety

      @@SamuelDrives Thank you again for your response, I really do appreciate it! At the moment due to Covid restrictions I am not even able to drive with an Audi technician to show him exactly what I mean and I do appreciate that it's hard to describe with words. In April/May time I should be able to test drive another Q7 and I will then see if it drives in the same manner. I turn the auto-start stop feature off every time I start the car (I wish there was a way to have it always disabled, as again I do not like how it works, but that is not specific to Audi in this case) From what you're saying you are not experiencing the car being in "Neutral" for a second when you take the foot off the brake pedal when stationary? My car does this all the time and if I stop at a slight incline it will roll back before it connects the gearbox to the engine and starts driving normally. You mention this behaviour in your current video, where you say that the decoupling of the transmission from the engine is made to save resources. Your comment gives me hope that there is indeed something wrong with my car that can be fixed, since I'm very close to selling the car just because of this annoying and uncomfortable behaviour. Thanks again for your responses!

    Shifter seems fairly simple once you get used to it. Bad design of putting the cup holders on the opposite side of the shifter. As careful as drivers can be. Let’s face it. Not all retailers have a 100% record of putting the lids on perfectly. Big risk of spilling coffee/coke etc.....on the shifter for driver. What was so difficult about keeping the cup holders behind the shifter and reducing the risk? Dealers weren’t getting enough MMLpanels/transmission selectors replaced
    Out of warranty?
    Between the two which is better the ZF 8HP or the S-Tronic? I would have thought that 8 speeeds would be better than seven but now not quite so sure.

    • @SamuelDrives
      @SamuelDrives  Před 3 lety

      Yes, i mean accident can happen, but audi doesn't care as long as you pay for a repair 😀. I dislike the aesthetics of the opened cup holder and would appreciate a panel to hide them.
      To the transmission. They are completely different design S tronic is a dry dual clutch, tiptronic is a hydraulic converter. Each have pros and cons, but for a use in a SUV the 8 speed is better

    • @SamuelDrives
      @SamuelDrives  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi. Nothing 😅it's an electronically controlled gear selector, therefore the internal logic won't allow you to engage park while moving. If you need to stop the vehicle and e. g. brake pedal has fallen off (highly unlikely) push up the Parking brake.
