NEW BUILD: Building a Woodland Viking House Bushcraft Shelter with my Dog | Hand Tools | Axe | Ep.1

- In this video, I begin building a bushcraft woodland shelter using the left-over materials from my previous 'lean-to' shelter. The tools used in this build consist of; a saw, axe, knife and a scotch-eyed auger (available from www.bushcrafttools.com).
Having read through all of your comments, I decided to go with the majority vote and choose to re-use the materials, without any need for sourcing extra wood. Amber usually takes up 'most' of my bed, so I'm hoping the new bed will be big enough for us now! What do you think?

#bushcraft #survival #shelter - Zábava
My uncle saw me watching a bunch of these videos and he said that when he did bushcraft he always took a pencil sharpener. He said he would use it on sticks and then use the shavings for building up a fire.
My cabelas multi tool has a nice little wood shaver on it. Proper tinder is #1. I always carry fatwood with me.
And if you decided to write measurements on your hands with a bic pen, you can wash it off with milk if you have some in the woods.😊
The dowels in the bed rails are a vast improvement over stakes in the ground. It will be more stable and last longer. Appreciate you always making Amber's comfort a priority. Good teaser for the mystery project in the next video. Looking forward to it. 👍
Thanks mate👊
When I turned eleven my dad was transferred to Portsmouth, NH with the 509th BW of our Air Force. It was a brand new AFB built during the end of the Cold War. It had been a huge farm just West of Portsmouth with an included lake. We lived ther for five years.
We built many small structures in the woods like these held together with vines and brambles.
Clicked immediately, I love these bushcraft shelter videos, and isn't Amber a wonderful dog? ❤️

Great work and video as always Dustin. Where there's more snow, a shelter like this gains a lot of cold-weather insulation from snow cover. You could probably use a layer of leaves near the bottom of the walls/roof to retain some heat. As this is a smaller shelter, you might try for some removable or foldable furniture, maybe a table against the back wall. How about trying a greased paper window? It's good to see that Amber still enjoys watching you work!
Great suggestions. Thanks Steve 👊

Excellent build and it'll be awesome to watch it progress. Yep, extra wide bed is a great idea as Amber would rather sleep on top of you instead of on a separate bed. Hmmm, brand new, a folding table. "What would I build", maybe an indoor firepit for cooking and warmth in inclement weather. 👍
Amber is a beautiful dog the coloring on her is gorgeous!
I am thankful for your work. You make the best bushcraft videos and explain things well and correct.
So glad you’re back. Missed you and Amber terribly. I was worried about the demolition of the debris shelter knocked the wind out of your sails.
So very happy to see new vids.
You’re a genuine soul. A gentleman, and a true bushman. God speed Dustin. Much❤ from the States.
The noise at the end sounded like a deer caller that hunters use. Could have just been a duck or goose though. Great vid again 😊
Heck, Yes. That is exactly what I asked for. You're awesome. I love A-frame shelters. They are easy to build and very sturdy. Thank you.
👊👍
sick
Can’t wait to see the finish product.
Great build❤️
creative 👍
Awesome build and video.
Even the pros catch their thumb everynow and then 😅
👍ouch
This is a fun hut. Nice you made the bed bigger.
I like your videos. I especially like your explanations of what you’re doing😊
So nice to see another traditional build being done!
That noise is just a UFO. Don't bother. Good video again Dustin. Thank you. 👍😁
Love your videos and can't forget Amber ❤️ 💕 💗
Am excited for this build series
Great start. Looking forward to following along.
I started watching you with husband. We really enjoy your videos. And we love Amber.
🙂Witty contrast between you and Amber as to wood processing!
Good job looks pretty good
Good video, cool channel. Thank you for video
I have a auger just like yours. One of the things a really appreciate about it is the handle design. It’s designed so that a stick can be pounded through it and it comes out the same diameter of the auger. Really cool design feature. Drill the hole and make a pin to fit it.
Great to see amber and you in the forest. Cheers mate
Great wee build. I just love seeing Amber in these vids!
Excellent video can't wait to see the shelter finished. Atb Stuart
I’m still looking forward to my biscuits and sausage gravy for breakfast next time! I know Amber agrees with me!
🤣🤣🤣
I've been waiting for one of you to build a clay woodstove or mass heater in one of the buildings. :D
The still of you and Amber is so compelling! She’s a luv, isn’t she? What a beautiful picture that makes!❤
The squirles around here make that noise all the time. I used to think it was a bird, but nope. Saw the darned thing on a branch.
The scotch eye is actually designed to make a dowel the size of the hole you drilled. That's why the eye is tapered on one end acts like a cutting edge to make the dowel
That's a settlers tool, a modified scotch eye. A regular scotch eye is just flat metal on the handle, although you can sharpen the hole I suppose.
That sound is magpie (bird) - I hear it whole day long around here. They can make a wide range of different sounds.
This is cool
The fact that I was completely immersed and relaxed is what made the ouch all the more funny 😂 but if it makes you feel any better you’ve earned a new subscriber, great vid 👍
Definitely keep out all in coming weather warmth is ur friend
Might you post the longer versions of these videos mate? Always great to see the process Dustin.
Yes mate, full build will be out in December. 👍
So far so good. Can't wait for more. I wanna build it 😁
It’s good to see a build again. Looking forward to the next bit 🍺
small stone fire place.. not quite sure how cold it gets there cheers from northern canada
love all ur videos...God bless
The production value of your videos is always top notch.
WOW! Vilken skönhet igen, min vän 👍
If you don't want the stakes and poles to decay fast, you should burn the ends of them before pounding them in the ground. It really stays a lot longer.
Yeah, I agree. This is just a short term (up to 12 months) shelter. Thank you
I really like your axe and folding saw
Amber steals the show!
Great build! Love your dog, too 😍
Top shelf video .
Cheers
11:11 great 💪 salam kenal dari Indonesia 🙏🇮🇩👉🔔
Excellent and entertaining as always. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the video! 🌀💚🌀
Were MY IDEAS miraculously melded with your skills, I would do much as you have done. I would NOT rely on the A-Frame shelter because of the hard-to-use space just under the eaves. Good Luck with having Amber snuggle in there! Going forward, I would make provisions for a safe stove and chimney stack. I'd LIKE to see a cedar shake roof. (I would buy in the shakes.)
Looking good!!! curious to know what you are putting in there LOL
I love your content. Can you provide the measurements of the woods etc? I want to build my own here on my land in the country
Thank you for watching 🙏
That noise at the end was most defiantly a baby Sasquatch.
Great video, can’t wait to see the end result. Have missed your content.
May God bless you and God loves you! John 3:16-18! Amen!!
Would love to see a cook and catch, possibly pheasant now they're in season or even wood pigeon maybe.
Amazing
Love it m8 👌👌
I'm pretty sure that the metal loop at the top of your scotch-eye auger is for cutting the pegs to the right size. The taper on one side of it is supposed to carve the stick down to the perfect size as its pounded through. Cheers.
Awesome work man
I had one single cat who took up so much room that I went from having a double bed to buying a queen sized bed so she'd have space. Many a cat has slept next to me since them, something multiple cats, and I have always had enough room so I highly recommend a big bed.
The noise was a Jay Bird. Like a QUARK sound
First of all let me say I love all your content, I've learned a lot. So my five year old daughter wants you to make a response video on why you use wooden dolls. 😆
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
In Germany we call it Eichelhäher (Garrulus glandarius)
another great quick video from ya a good start haven't seen a live from you in a while.
Great video. FYI...Did you know that the handle end of your Scotch-eyed auger is designed to cut the pegs to the perfect size. Note one side of it is tapered to a sharp edge.
It's so much harder to hand cut the pegs to the correct size, and you stand the chance of splitting the logs if you force them.
I'm heading out to build a longhouse soon. Perhaps with your build I might either build a large fireplace in the back wall or even extend it in that direction make a full kitchen.
I'm hoping to build a bent wood longhouse and have a large fireplace directly across from the bed. A rack above the bed for storage and also drape blankets or tarps around the 4 sides and top for insulation, like a canopy bed.
It would be great to smoke meats in the chimney.
A rack up high is out of the way for storage and harder for mice to get to
(No idea what your bear situation is).
I'm planning a tiny greenhouse or solarium too, but looks like you're going with pure primitive.
That dog Amber wagging her tail sitting on the bed hehe. She was thinking you built all of that for her.
Love to watch you! (2nd only to you King RAFA)
Niiiice. Been waiting for new bushcraft shelter build! ✌️🤠 Can't wait to see more of it. Needs fireplace! 🔥
btw I wondered when I hear the "ouch" word when you hammered your finger 😂😂
Great video and great build Dustin. Anymore builds planned with Mike??
Looks Fantastic and Truly Peaceful! Your Amber is My BabyElla ( Great Pyrenees Boxer Mix Girl) and My Boy Reagan- Golden Retriever. Truly Mans Best Friends!
Keep up with the good work like the build
Thanks mandy
i would build in a heatsource for warmth and cooking..
I'm thinking a short cooking fireplace in the rear wall
Ow low! 🦉👍 Wonderful!!! Sorry bout the thumb. Quite a whack and all you could muster was a simple "ow"?! Good Man!! ✌️😎✝️🙏
😁😁😁😁👍
Loving already doing a awesome job on it so far mate
Legend 👊
relaxed to your vlog after a hard days work loved it mate be be well and safe !
mega, very nice build. as for the noise, is that not the noise lee makes every time he finds another chanterelle
good see you puting good vid out thanks lee
Thanks Lee 👊
Sounded like a muntjac deer to me.
Good suggestion
i would like to see a hillside dugout shelter
Mate this looks so nice. Where did you get that axe from? It looks very good.
Little Sapling: “Ah, I think I’ll just have a nice stretch here on the forest floor.”
Amber: “Oh no you don’t!”
Could you also build some commodities? For examplea char and a table?
nice
Excellent I like when people explain what's going on the silent videos is pretty much worthless to me do some cooking next time great video thanks for sharing
Looking at the roof structure i can't help but think how much more space you'd have inside if those timbers were sat on a 3 or 4 foot high wattle wall. I know you'd then have to daub it and all the work that would cause but either way it is another interesting build.
Great video Dustin always enjoy your build video's when you do the back wall I would like to see if you could add a table/large shelf so you have something eat off when sitting on the bed atvb Jimmy 😎😎👍👍 ps what's the best blade for a silky bigboy I mainly camp in a pine woods 🤟
Nice one 👊🏾🫶🏾
Wood stove!
That noise sounded like a Jay
Do it much longer x
What grit dry stone do you use for sharpening your axes?
