Join us for a trip down dog training memory lane as Dr. Ian Dunbar leads us through how to recognize the training opportunities your dog gives you.
Any time your dog is doing something you don’t like, it means a training opportunity is about to present itself. At some point your dog is going to do something you do like, and you should be on the lookout for the moment when that change happens so you can reinforce it.
You can try luring your dog to stop undesirable behaviors, like barking and lunging at other dogs, or you can simply wait. They will stop and look back at you at some point, possibly just for a fraction of a second. If you can recognize that moment when the dog stops lunging to look back at you, you can reinforce it, and if you do this enough your dog will start looking at you more and pretty soon they’ll be in a sit-stay, looking up at you, waiting for the praise and treats that are sure to come!
