Join us for a trip down dog training memory lane as Dr. Ian Dunbar leads us through how to use Sit during play sessions to help train your dog.
Teaching your dog to Sit while they are focused on you is one thing, teaching them to Sit when they’re distracted or excited is something else. One of the best things you can do is practice getting your dog to sit while they are playing with other dogs.
    This process has 4 stages:
Stage 1. Grab your dog by the collar, give them a treat, then tell them to go play. This teaches the dog that it’s good to have their collar grabbed and it’s not the end of the play session, just time for a little snack.
Stage 2: Grab your dog’s collar, then have them Sit, then let them Go Play. This introduces the Sit into the process and teaches the dog that they have to Sit before they will be released.
Stage 3: Get your dog to Sit without touching the dog, then take the collar, then let the dog Go Play. Now we’re getting somewhere! At this point you are getting your dog to sit using just your voice, even when they’re in the middle of playing with another dog.
Stage 4. Get your dog to Sit from a distance, then walk up to the dog, take their collar, then release the dog to Go Play. This is an important step because many dogs won’t listen to their owners when they’re at even a few feet of distance.
