Join us for a trip down dog training memory lane as Dr. Ian Dunbar leads us through how to measure the comprehension and understanding of your dog.
A lot of owners get really frustrated with their dogs because they think their dog understands what they want and so, when the dog doesn’t do what the owner instructs, the dog is being willfully disobedient. But dogs think very differently from people and they rarely understand our instructions as well as we think.
A dog’s ability to understand instructions is very context specific. If you change the situation or the environment it will make it so your dog doesn’t even understand what you are instructing them to do.
If you want to test whether your dog understand verbal instructions you have to give your dog a verbal instruction while remaining completely still so your dog can’t rely on body language. If your dog doesn’t understand the verbal instruction, wait half a second then follow immediately with the hand signal and your dog will quicky learn the meaning of the verbal instruction.
