The reason for the reluctancy at first was probably because they wanted to confirm he was actually abandoned. They didn’t want to approach him and risk getting into a confrontation with another nearby group if he wasn’t. Once he displayed his respect and looked away from the alpha, they knew he was alone. It’s not uncommon for gorilla families to adopt baby gorillas that were left behind. Silverbacks are a very close knit species. The reason they take in newcomers is because they have a strength in numbers mentality. Babies are more likely to be accepted than older lone gorillas since they’re not seen as a viable threat.
