On the bucket control joystick the button at your thumb is a clutch in essence ( allows you to rev the motor while still in gear speeds up hydraulic movements with out gaining ground speed). On front of joystick middle finger area is push button 4x4 while holding down ( nice for pushing into pile then letting go and abilities to turn better and not tear up ground also).
Side note I enjoy all your videos I have been an operator 10+ yard now I like to watch you for a different perspective and possibly learn new tips and tricks. Keep the mind open I guess is my perspective I am taking...

Tip for setting up to dig. Before setting the front bucket down first, keep it elevated, drop outriggers first, level out, THEN drop your front bucket. Less stress on the outriggers, they will lift the machine easier. Also, make sure you've taken the front bucket off of float.

It's been some time since I've been on a backhoe. I recall there being a 'detent' position for the loader control. I recall after dumping the dirt out (pushing lever to the right), curl the bucket (pushing lever inwards), push quickly inwards and it goes into a 'detent' lock where the bucket automatically positions itself to be perfectly flat when you lower it to the ground. I think it takes the 'guess' work out of what is flat or not. Also, I recall pulling down dirt with the front bucket at a stockpile before scooping it. 'Aerating' the dirt or rather breaking it up before scooping makes an easier and fuller scoop.

I learned heavy equipment doing land reclamation of coal fields in Kentucky. Backhoes, dozers, graders, scrapers, front end loaders and excavators. Love to feel the power of the earth moving machines. I don't know if you would call it an advanced technique though moving and lowering or raising the bucket at the same time saves time. Also three point turns are handy to know.

Excellent video. I haven't ran one of these for several years and needed a refresher. Literally everything you said was perfect. Covered everything that needed to be covered in a straight forward way without overexplaining. Backhoes are handy machines like you said but they aren't very good at either function. Why not rent a front loader if you need a loader? Or a skid steer or excavator as the job requires? One thing that should be mentioned is that with these big tires, backhoes can be driven on the road. That's why I needed a refresher is because I need to burry a fuel and propane tank but Airport Equipment isn't able to deliver an excavator and I don't have a trailer big enough to haul one. So I need to drive a backhoe a few miles to get to the job. Just adding to the versatility of the machine I suppose

@Heavy Metal Learning Thank you for the video, I was originally trained next to the JCB factory in Derbyshire, England back in 1990. Two-week course and operated a JCB 3CX, brilliant training course but unfortunately no longer exists. Not a criticism on your advice as we are all learning even when we are old :-( but my safety instructions for onsite work, especially on uneven surfaces and slopey ground, always drop your front shovel when you stop immediately, curl it over for digging so you don't get pulled off your mark. I think in soft ground and sand a flat front shovel is ok. Dozing and other front shovel work like loading, levelling and forklift, slide your backhoe boom position over left or right and fold it up as close as possible to the main body. This puts more weight on the front so when you are grading/dozing it doesn't float or wanna lift up on you. Same applies when dragging and levelling backwards, keep as much weight on the front as possible. Thanks for sharing your training tips, they will surely help newbies starting out and provide great information for those wishing to start as a machine operator.

Next time you do a video, can you do a split screen while digging with the bucket? One from the drivers view, showing the use of the controls and the other the movement of the bucket. I'm a game/simulator creator and CZcams guy for trucks and I was thinking of creating a SIMPLE excavator, Backhoe, and digger app/game. Do believe it would be possible to mimic the movements of the backhoe arm with just two thumbs? From what I can see, the most difficult part to emulate would be the foot pedal where the arm extends out, but using a PS4 controller you could use the trigger and bumper buttons. Obviously, it wouldn't be compared to real life, but do you think it would help people learn the movements with an app like this?

Meaning you raise the bucket 3 inches, then stop that, then angle the bucket, stop that, then raise the bucket some more? Or can you drive both hydraulic systems for raising / lowering and adjusting angle bucket at the same time?

Another entertaining video! I have a JCB 1cxt backhoe on tracks. You should do a review on it. It is a very cool machine!

Yeah...have spoke to JCB about trying one of those out. Kind of look like a skid steer with a backhoe behind it...interesting.

Can you please make a video about a track dumper( rotating base )?

What’s the appropriate way to use/switch the speed settings? Can you shift up or down while moving or should you be stopped? If I’m driving on the road at 15-25 mph in 3, what would be a good speed/ rpm to shift back down to 2? Or should I stop and then switch back to 2?
