    The Black Phone Movie Description:
Finney Shaw is a shy but clever 13-year-old boy who's being held in a soundproof basement by a sadistic, masked killer. When a disconnected phone on the wall starts to ring, he soon discovers that he can hear the voices of the murderer's previous victims -- and they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn't happen to Finney.
The Black Phone is a 2021 American coming-of-age supernatural horror film directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, who both produced with Jason Blum. It is an adaptation of the 2004 short story of the same name by Joe Hill. The film stars Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, James Ransone, and Ethan Hawke. In the film, an abducted teenager (Thames) uses a mysterious telephone to communicate with the previous victims of his deranged captor (Hawke).
Derrickson came on board to direct The Black Phone after departing the sequel to Marvel Studio's Doctor Strange over creative differences. Filming occurred over two months in Wilmington and surrounding counties in the state of North Carolina. The film premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 25, 2021, and was theatrically released by Universal Pictures on June 24, 2022. A critical and commercial success, it grossed $161 million and received praise for its performances and faithfulness to the source material.

They didn't explicitly say it, but Gwen stays at her friends on Friday night because that's when her dad gets drunk. The first Friday she stayed over there Finn says "I'll take care of dad" like this is their routine. One thing I love about this movie is gives you enough throwaway lines to put the pieces together but doesn't shove the information down your throat. They never say that Finn has powers like his mom and Gwen, which is why he can talk to the dead kids, but when their dad was beating Gwen he looked at Finn and quickly says "that goes for you too," implying that Finn also has a gift. Also, when Finn was talking to Bruce on the phone Bruce said that the phone always rang but they couldn't hear it. Finn could only hear it because of his gift.

Bruce is the victim not the grabber and also here's what i think it's happening with finney's power's
I think they heard the phone ring, but couldn't hear the voices behind it, Finney could hear them while the others couldn't, finney can hear the phone and the kids, the kids could only hear the phone.
Finney has a gift, hear and see ghosts
The Grabber also can hear the phone and the kids, but thought he was going nutz I guess
When you think about it, what if their mom had both powers? I mean, no wonder she commited, she could hear and see dead people, and every time she went to sleep she had to see these strange "dream" with nobody believing her
And one last thing, I saw in a comment about divine "jobs", like, Finney's job was to be the last victim and end the grabber, while Gwen's was to find the other kids.
But in a way finney is helping the ghost's rest with justice and preventing more ghost children from spawning , and Gwen is helping in the pshycal plane, helping the police find the bodies and the grabber.
Man it started with only 2 lines and ended up looking like an TCC for a comment of a month ago

I loved this movie. Stephen King taught his son well. Love how you caught that the mom is the reason Finny could hear the voices on the phone and why the dau had the dreams. Also liked how, at first/individually each call had some random info but it ended up that each ghost had something important to contribute. The wire, the hole, the bike lock the fridge meat used to distract the dog etc. I also like how we weren’t spoon fed the reveals and had to think of it ourselves… like the ghosts weren’t leading the dau to Finny but to them. She led the police to the house with the bodies, it was just luck that the grabber kept the boys alive in the house across the street. This was original and the acting was phenomenal. She wasn't saying she wasn't intimidated; it was just specifically the lines in the conversation between the 2 characters in the bathroom where one is asking for help with his studies that felt a little recited and unnatural. I noticed it too on my first watch of the movie,, but I don't think it takes me out of the film entirely and I understand if that was a weird line to have to say because asking someone to tutor you isn't something that people often have to say and it doesn't really lend itself to emotional acting. I have to say during later parts of the movie once he's a ghost, the kid does very good at his role and it doesn't feel as awkward or staged at all. Overall, I love this movie

No reason to hate a person for noticing something felt staged in a movie, especially when kids are young and learning for professional acting

The reason we don't get much back story about the Grabber or the other kids is because the movie wasn't about them.
The movie was about the main protagonist Finn, and his character arc. Everything that happens in the movie is to serve
his development. Except the stuff that happens with his sister, which is its own adjacent narrative alongside the main plot.

43:00 the grabber was the result of parental abuse the movie is about bad house and bad parenting we see how violence all the kids are due to their houses and how mature for their ages they are the grabber is just the result of how these kids will turn up to be because of the abuse the black phone never worked for the grabber as a kid when his father used to lock him down there he was seeking help so badly through the phone but it didn't work it only worked for finn because of his mom but again this is a multi layer thing where the movie is saying there is paranormal abilities with the siblings here but at the same time it could only be in their heads and finn only imagined that the phone is working because he was disparate and he only escaped because of how smart he is and how he tried many things to escape
also the reason the grabber has a two piece mask is to represent both the father (the demon face part of the mask) and the son (the lower part of the mask)

Even though most think it's just a cat I believe it should've been treated with respect. It died and the whole point of us having them was to learn. Not mutilate the bodies.

Just some fun trivia! The Black Phone was originally a short story by Joe Hill (Stephen King’s son), and it was in a book called 20th Century Ghosts. There was also a story in the same book called The Cape, which might explain why the boy with the bandana (Robin) was wearing a cape!

Now I recognize the storytelling style...
Joe HIll (a.k.a. Joseph Hillström King, son of Tabitha and Stephen King) wrote the short story.
It's been said by Stephen King himself that all the books he wrote (up to a point) were connected by the Dark Tower series, and it started with a short story.
Maybe he's passed that part on to his son... We'll have to wait and see.

Btw, you NEED to see An American Werewolf in London, it's a modern horror classic with state of the art practical effects.

  • @bel410la

I love this movie, because how smart Finn is, not only did he do things by himself but he learned from everything the other kids had done wrong, the things they had found and he used them all to survive. My favorite moment was when he killed him and all the other kids were repeating the lines they had said earlier in the movie like "Today's the day asshole" and "Finn's arm is mint!"
The police didn't listen to Max not because they didn't think he wasn't right, but because everything that he had found out was things they already knew, the reason they even came to his house was because it was in the neighborhood he explicitly said the grabber must be in, and they also saw that the house he was in had a garage, and they knew they couldn't listen to everything he said and have him join them because he was doing drugs. XD So Yes Max was on the right track but he was a few steps behind the police.
