Smile Movie Description:
After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, Dr. Rose Cotter starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can't explain. As an overwhelming terror begins taking over her life, Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.
Smile is a 2022 American psychological horror film written and directed by Parker Finn in his feature directorial debut, based on his 2020 short film Laura Hasn't Slept. It stars Sosie Bacon as a therapist named Rose Cotter, who, after witnessing the bizarre suicide of a patient, goes through increasingly disturbing and daunting experiences, leading her to believe what she is experiencing is supernatural. It also stars Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner, Robin Weigert, Kal Penn, and Rob Morgan, as well as Caitlin Stasey playing the same character she played in the short film.
A feature adaptation of Finn's short was announced in June 2020, and the cast was added in October 2021. Filming began that month in New Jersey. Originally set for a streaming release through Paramount+, the studio opted to release the film theatrically after strong positive test screenings. It was made available for streaming through Paramount+ after its first 45 days in theaters. Smile had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest on September 22, 2022, and was released in the United States on September 30, 2022, by Paramount Pictures.
Smile received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the visuals, themes and Bacon's performance, and has grossed $215 million worldwide against a $17 million budget.

Woman at the beginning was like "I've got one scene in this movie and I'm going to make it COUNT!"
And did 💀
She starred in the original short film that inspired this one.
And the dude in jail
:)
DIDN'T SHE, THOUGH??????
Mell, my man, you don’t even understand how terrifying it was to see this in theatres lol. VERY loud volume, surround sound, super close to the massive screen. It was insane lol
Big facts
omg yes
Hell yeah
I must’ve been the only one that thought this movie was absolute hilarious. I mean I won’t deny I got jump scared a few times, but overall movie was funny.
ikr, i saw it in the theater and omfg
That shot of the creature pulling open her jaw and sticking its head has stuck with me since I saw this in theaters.
What really freaks me out is to think of what the demon actually is. It’s wearing other peoples skin but what truly lies underneath? Hard to think about something being even more terrifying than that.
YES. this movie is of the devil and I rebuke it
@@sarahb6163 imagine watching a horror movie, and then complaining that the horror stuck with you. 🙄 Girl, this is NOT your genre. Go back to Christian flicks or something 😂💀
This was the second or third highest grossing horror film of the year, $216 million dollars against a $17 million dollar budget.
I remember watching the trailer while my Dad and I were watching Top Gun Maverick and I thought, "Wow, what a creepy film this will be."
It was actually number one worldwide. Nope was number one domestically
And what a creepy film it TRULY was 😬😬😬😬
That intro scene alone I was like 😭😭😬😬😬😬 I remember saying this is going to be so good and my expectations were so LOW
YOU LITERALLY JUST TYPED EVERYTHING FROM AMAZON THEY LITERALLY HAD IT ON THE SIDE *TRIVIA* 🙄🙄🙄🤦🏿♀️🤦🏿♀️🤦🏿♀️
I learned that the actress that plays the therapist going thru all this is Kevin Bacon's daughter...I knew she resembled an actor I knew

I loved the theme of grief and trauma are demons. Reminds me of Hereditary, with the ending just as morbid and unsettling.
Hereditary was traumatizing especially the sister die
The Babbadook did all this better
@@chanelhenderson8460 Tho I will admit this is a good ass way to show how mental illness can consume you.
I'm happy there was no happy or bittersweet ending, even tho The Babadook had the more realistic ending.

The Entity at the end was so fing creepy holy hell
I choked on my dinner when you hit us with the “Naughty” 🤣

Top tier Courage The Cowardly Dog reference😭🔥
That cartoon scared me when I was a child
@@frozengamer3030 that's what made it so good, it skated that line between comedy and horror just enough to scare kids but not enough to stop them from watching lol.

The sound design in this movie was off-the-chain and TOTALLY made it so much more terrifying! Great reaction!
Late reply, but if you appreciate how sound design and music can make things unsettling, i really recommend the show Hannibal. Some of the musical scores honestly make my skin crawl
Not going to lie this is one of the scariest movies I've seen in a long time. Right up there with the ring
I just finished this movie and damn, really good for this type of horror. When she decided to fight her trauma alone it was her biggest mistake. She was alone every time the entity got into her head. She should have been around people the whole movie. Not her fault though. The people around her didn't know how to help. Really good portrayal of what it feels like to carry around feelings and thoughts you know no one will understand, or at least have an extremely hard time relating.
Caitlin Stassey better get more roles after this. She's always been solid. She's done some indie horrors and they were mid-level (like, if you love horror, you kinda give them a pass), but she's always put in solid work. She was on Reign too.
This has a great cast tho and the production team did a great job.
I thought I recognized her! She was really good on Reign and a very beautiful actress. I'm surprised her filmography is so sparse tbh, but maybe its by choice?
Shes crazy
This movie had me sleeping with the light on. I haven’t been this afraid in a long time.
I saw this in the theater and words cannot describe how much this messed me up. I was still trembling hours after the movie, and it made it hard for me to sleep for weeks. The scene near the end where the thing pulls off its face and reveals all those teeth will be in my brain forever
The youtuber was too stunned to speak😆
That always kills me...😂
5 sec in and I’m already dying 😭
Mello: “oh god noooo” 😭
Great reaction!
They cut a lot of the relationship scenes which is why the fiance character fell flat and the one lady's husband had died just a week ago after acting insane so that's why she was freaking out (also a lot of people whose family members commit suicide feel a lot of anger/guilt). Hopefully since Joel has a heads up on the entire situation he might be able to break the chain 😬
The swinging head is crazy!!
The fake out of her stabbing the patient really got me 😭
R.I.P. Mustache 🐈⬛
It's also interesting how all the victims had already had a past trauma 🤔
The last 10 minutes of this film is one of the greatest cinematic experiences I've ever attended a theatre to.
Why though haha every single person I've talked to that watched this absolutely hated the ending haha
@@LexyThomas134 I knew from early on she was going to die. But how they got there, how it was executed and presented was top notch
@@llamasarus1 Yeah, it was too predictable for me, everyone's different, but i like to be surprised, but i literally called everything that was going to happen. I hate when that happens haha
@@LexyThomas134 I think it's predictable but in a way where I'm satisfied when my predictions are fulfilled. I could predict the "what" but not the "how". The "how" is what impressed me the most.
@@LexyThomas134 That doesn't mean I was happy about the outcome of the plot. I had no problem with it as an artistic choice, but of course we all wanted her to pull through!
Your horror movie content is hilarious lol great reaction Melo
I watched this movie with my sister, and she started crying at 21:05. Had me dying laughing 🤣
" F*ck you, dude from the Boys!" HAHA
The beginning was what Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare should’ve been like.
You know the actress who plays the main character is Kevin Bacon's daughter, Sosie Bacon. I recognize her from the show 13 Reasons Why.
Not the haircut guy he traumatized me as a child
I'm excited to see you react to this movie. Now just to get Billie Binges to watch.
I remember the police scene after the girl first dies in front of Rose, where he dismisses it as she was a nutcase and crazy, and it hits very hard. I spent the night in the psych ward once. It was really just a waiting room actually, because there was nowhere else to put us. A girl showed me how to make a bed out of the chairs and we played hangman in the outdoor area. A guy came screaming outside at one point, frustrated with how the nurse on duty was treating him (they didn't want to talk or deal with any of us, they forgot that I had an IV port thing in my arm when I was told to go home), and as soon as he saw us, he immediately apologised and went back inside. The police were called to deal with a fight between that guy and an older man that had been brought in. They were only about a foot away from me in a crowded corridor, and I asked one of the officers how their night was. I was ignored and they commented to one of their fellow officers "I don't see why we have to be around all these crazies."
I will just say that I was fine and I was released the next day without problems and was never a danger to myself or others, just a dip in my own mental health. But yeah, just thought I'd share this because mental health stigma is so real and damaging, I have never forgotten that night.
my friend's neck and shoulders were hella sore after leaving the theatre cuz she kept ducking down in fear throughout the whole movie lolol
This film was much better than I thought it was gonna be based on the trailer. It’s rare that happens these days 😂
Not the courage the cowardly do refence. That episode was scary
Bruh courage scared me as a kid so much 😂 and yes people without blinds are psychopaths for sure
I hope the editor never stops adding memes. I needed them laugh breaks the tension was killing me
I really liked what they did in the opening scene with the blue room. Instead of having the camera focus on the flowers and pot, the scene makes it stand out and makes it the center of focus, implying it’s future use.
Bruh the Courage the Cowardly Dog reference made me jump with joy. I’m so glad you mentioned that greatass show!
I'm so glad you've watched it! As I said, it surprised me lol - and I'm fussy horror movies wise. Well done for getting through it!
Yo, you putting in that Courage the cowardly dog clip was scarier than the entire movie and I saw it in theaters. That episode haunts me to this day. Some people won’t understand the pain it caused lmao 😂
I had honestly watched so many reaction to this movie that didn't know if I wanted to see another lol but yours was very entertaining! You can tell when some reactors ham up their jump scares because they think it'll get more views but I can tell yours were genuine and your commentary was very funny! Keep up the good work :)
I made some rules for myself when I watch movies like this.
1. Eyes on the screen at all times
2. Never close them except when blinking
3. Hands on my side and/or gripping something. So I can not hide behind em
4. Comfort Food ready
As a result, my nerves get stronger every movie. Makes those kind of films much more enjoyable IMO.
I was fortunate enough to watch this movie early. I really enjoyed it but just wished it ended differently. With that said it's forever #justiceformustache lol
I'm a person who cares more when an animal is killed off in a horror movie than a person. Couldn't kill off Connie the dog in "the Devil In Me", even for a trophy, couldn't watch the dog getting killed in "the Babadook"or "the Witch", couldn't watch the cat being killed in "Drag me to Hell". Leave the damn animals alone! Lol.
I haven't heard that many dolphin noises since the Sailor Mouth episode of SpongeBob
This was a way better movie than I expected. I hope the director doesn't pull a Shyamalan and make a bunch of duds.
So excited to see your reaction to this, it turned out to be one of my favourite movies of the year. I saw it in cinemas and was NOT prepared, especially for the ending. It absolutely terrified me 😭
I was so annoyed at the end. Yes, it looked amazing and the monster crawling into her freaked me out. But I knew that end was coming...I mean the ex-bf is a cop. He can track her location either via her phone or car. The house is connected to her past so of course he will know that to. I knew she would die as soon as he showed up.
Her only chance to stop this would’ve been to kill herself in total isolation early on while she still had some control of herself (but understandable why she didn’t do that as she didn’t know what was happening) or to kill someone else and plead insanity (which she could not morally do). So if there is a sequel, hopefully the cop will do a better job at ending this.
You have to watch The Barbarian. It subverts all expectations. Definitely the best horror film of the year.
Eh, it's aight. The mystery of the first 30 min is definitely the best part of it
I liked the film well enough, and I appreciated that it seemed like it wanted to address a real world issue like personal trauma and how personal trauma can affect, not just the person involved, but even be passed on to future generations.
I totally respected that.
But my problem with it is that the films desire for a twist ending undermined the whole point it was making to the point of being reckless.
Because of the way the film ends, it's ultimate message about trauma ends up being, not that you've got to face up to and work through your trauma, but that it's pointless to try to work through your trauma, and the more time you spend trying to work through it, the more people you're going to hurt.
In the film it turns out that it would have been better if the main character had done what she originally planned to do and had just gone out into the woods and killed herself so that her 'curse' couldn't be passed on to anyone else.
What kind of message is that about how to cope with and deal with trauma?
@jeremyodwyer9232
I don’t think that was what they were going for. I think the message was that she should have accepted counseling and sought help from others to deal with her trauma. However, she didn’t realize until it was too late that she was experiencing the consequences of her trauma. The ending doesn’t undermine that point. It is consistent in representing the reproducing effect of trauma if it is not properly addressed.
@jeremyodwyer9232
Well I don’t think rose was intended to be a model of behavior for people suffering trauma. She was only meant to represent those people. This story is a cautionary tale, not a moral story. The message isn’t that you should kill yourself if you are suffering trauma. Suicide is presented as the most extreme consequence of not seeking help from others and isolating yourself.
@@robertrothberg3003 Thanks for the reply.
Sorry, maybe I didn't explain my point well enough. I don't think the point they're making is that you should kill yourself if you're suffering trauma.
I don't like the ending that suggests there's a point in you're life where it's too late to try and work through your trauma.
They spend the whole movie making the comparison to generational trauma and how if you don't face up to it and try to work through it you end up hurting, not just yourself, but the people you love.....and then they have an ending where when the person does that it's the wrong move....
....because it's too late.
They highlight an issue... they put forward a solution...and when the person finally does what they say she should do it's the wrong move.
At that point in the film, in the final act when she goes out to the cabin, the film says that it's already too late for this 30 something year old woman to deal with her trauma and it would have been better for everyone if she k'lled herself.
Again that's my issue with it. I don't like the message that there's a moment where it's just too late to try and work through you're trauma.
If you've ever seen a movie called They Look Like People, I think they handled a similar message better.
Thanks again for the reply.
@@robertrothberg3003 Like you say yourself that suicide is presented as the most extreme consequence of not getting help.
But in this film it would have been better for her and everyone she loved if she HAD k'lled herself like she intended to when she arrived out to the cabin.
Her NOT k'lling herself made things worse for the people she loved because she stayed alive just long enough to pass on the trauma.
I think the film should have ended after she went out to the cabin and faced her trauma....but the writer wanted a twist ending that left the door open for a sequel and it ended up undermining the point of the rest of the movie.
@jeremyodwyer9232
I disagree with you on a few points. Firstly, the movie did not present Rose’s decision as the right call. Throughout the film the other characters were constantly telling rose that she needs psychotherapy and other assistance and practically spell out that it is the solution. However, instead she decides she will ignore their pressuring because they don’t believe in the entity that is haunting her and they were not being sensitive to her plight. Secondly, out of the two options that you mentioned, the one she chose was definitely worse. I have no problem saying that and the movie doesn’t either. Thirdly, it was only too late when the demon took over and she committed suicide. Up to that point she could have reached out to someone to watch over her or spend time with her. This represents her succumbing to the self-injuring impulse. So, the message of the movie does not hinge on that one decision. It hinges on multiple decisions, which were all wrong. The movie is saying to do something before it’s too late. That means do something before you lose your reasoning capacity and make the worst decision of your life.

Oh thank you!! She looked so dang familiar but couldn’t figure it out.
Normally I don’t like horror movies relying on jumpscares but this movie did it pretty well
I saw this in theaters with my sister when it first came out and we both couldn’t sleep for about a week and a half. Then when we finally got back to reality we saw it a second time
Masochist
My only negative was that it didn't end with Sosie Bacon defeating her demon and not holding onto the guilt of her mother's death.
But it had to end onna bad ending

Miss Munoz was such a rude, immature and stupid lady! How DARE she talk to Rose like that! I have sympathy for her loss, but not even 30 seconds and she flips out towards a stranger who wasn’t even being rude, like a real nutcase would do! I hope Rose yelled back before leaving.

"a tribal hip hop beat" killed me
I loved this movie.... up until the last ten minutes. This movie was shot amazingly, the music was incredible, and lead was amazing... but if this movie is trying to say something about grief and mental health... what is it trying to say? I think the message got kind of lost. If the solution to trauma is to isolate yourself and... end things... I'm not sure that's the message the writer wanted to put out....
Well it's more of a metaphor about trauma and what it does to people, and the effects of it on other people leading up to a person's suicide. I don't think It was trying to make any statement about overcoming mental illness but still I feel like she should've been able to live in the end

One of those movies that will stay with you for a while o.O
I thought this movie was alright, but personally I didn't care for the ending. I thought there was a much better "twist" just begging to be thrown in at the very end that would've elevated this film even more. My idea for a change would've been having Joel shoot and kill Rose as she was setting herself on fire. If I'm not mistaken this would've ended the cycle and probably killed the demon. Instead, he just stands there and lets it happen like an idiot, dooming himself to the same fate. In my opinion there aren't enough horror films where the monster is soundly defeated at the end, and I think if they changed the ending it would've stood out to me more.
lol right. I was like dude grab the damn matches or something lol. What kinda cop is that
@@DesignzRUs Exactly. He's also a cop, so shouldn't he have a gun? I just think it would've benefited immensely from another twist right at the end, where he regretfully shoots her before she can kill herself and continue the cycle.
The way you way you reacted, when you hit your knee, you sound it like Peter Griffin, lol
