  • Roman Abramovich revolutionized Chelsea. But the tools he utilized to lead this revolution are the same ones that ultimately led to the downfall of both him and the football club. This video essay delves deep into how Roman Abramovich amassed his fortune, how the oligarch employed this fortune to revolutionize Chelsea Football Club - and the football industry at large - and how it all unraveled during his final days as Chelsea owner.

Football fanatics can't pretend to care about the money being put into football. Long are the days of it representing the identity of some place with the teams being filled by their native sons. Also the anti-Putin oligarchs are somehow often worse having had more of a hand in the destructive schemes at the end of the Soviet Union like Khodorkovsky and Berezovsky who Abramovic was closely associated with.

It's not really genocide since the population is actually growing even larger than if Israel allowed development since once countries become wealthier, their fertility rates decline. It's a kind of wealth curse: you get the material things you want, but you are out bred by your poorer enemies. Even the cultural genocide accusations are dubious given Israel has intentionally made Palestine more traditional, more Muslim as opposed to letting it become more secular and modern which would naturally erode the former. I don't really care for Israel either

Roman Abramovich has done more for the UK than any government in recent memory.
He has provided jobs through Chelsea FC and even gave access to the club's resources to the NHS during the pandemic, despite not being allowed in the country since 2018.
He has Ukrainian roots, for goodness' sake; Roman has a Ukrainian grandmother, he was against the war, and was even poisoned for trying to bring peace when it first broke out.
The sanctions and seizure of assets he has faced have been nothing short of unjust, purely due to his Russian nationality.
A big lesson learned during this whole thing is that the UK government thinks they are above everyone; there is no fairness. If they want to seize your assets based on alleged speculation, they will, no questions asked. They criticise the Kremlin for being authoritarian, but where is the democracy in this approach? They are literally doing the same thing.
If there were concerns about Roman and his money, why accept it in the first place? The treatment Roman received is a clear case of double standards and government hypocrisy.

    • @thomas_delaney
      @thomas_delaney Před měsícem

How many jobs did Roman really create? A few dozen? A hundred? You're making it sound like he is singlehandedly responsible for reviving the UK economy. If Chelsea never existed and there was another PL club to take their spot, there would be nearly an equal number of jobs created from that other club having PL stature. All of those security people on part time contracts for Chelsea games would be there for QPR games instead. Horrible argument.
Roman made his money off of Russian oligarch ties to Putin. Roman was the largest proprietor of the steel industry and is a literal billionaire off the back of thousands of working class people across Russia and across the world. I've seen the working conditions of one of his former mills in the US and it is no fairy tale. He can be against the war all he wants in name but he only is who he is today because of his ties to Putin.
As for "why accept it in the first place?" That is a question for the Premier League. Their Owners and Directors Test is brazenly about the sustainability of profit rather than any ethical reasons. As a literal oligarch, Roman was always guaranteed to be in the black from an accounting perspective. Same goes for the Saudis - they are printing money so whats the issue!? The PL accepted them without any regard for ethics.
I won't disagree with the UK government thinking they're above everything. The West in general has the power and influence to act like they care about a select few issues. But it is sad to see so many regular people stand up for a despotic billionaire who doesn't give a shit about you.

Is it really that sad? I mean first of all every club goes through bad times and some bad times can be really bad. And second of all, Chelsea’s “great times” were only possible because of inconceivable amounts of money which Abramovich only had because of countless and consistent corruption that ultimately has impoverished the average citizen of Russia. When you take the context of Chelsea’s success can you really be that sad that they are over?

As a Chelsea fan since 1996 I always feared that
The Abramovich era would end badly & so it has it just took a hell of a lot longer than I personally thought it would to happen but happen in the end it did.
Rimes might be bad for us now buy christ we have see a hell of a lot worse times back in the late 80's early 90's we nearly lost The Bridge all together & Chelsea F.C would of went with it.
As my Dad always say about football everything comes in cycles
      Liverpool where on top
      Manchester United where on top
Blackburn Rovers had a brief spell at the top
Arsenal went undefeated for a season
Chelsea had a spell of winning many trophies
Manchester City have been very successful of late & at some point myb
Newcastle United will have a spell as top dogs or someone else.
      I can remember in
the 90's Real Madrid did not win much for a long period & in the early
00's before Messi came along Barcelona went
4 seasons without wining anything at all.
      Look at Milan
in the 90's Inter did not win much.
Aston.Villa & Hamburg where successful in the
      80's
We Chelsea might be terrible now but we still had some fantastic times & some day we will rise again.
      No Surrender
we are are Chelsea till the grave.

    roman abramovich
was born to jewish refugees fighting for survival in siberia.
siberia is the coldest, most remote area of russia.
it is also the most depressing,
with the highest mortality rate via suicide in the country.
    to add to this,
his mother passes away early in his life.
his father dies three years later.
roman is forced to live with his uncle.
he dreams of a life outside the harshness of siberia,
    and enlists in the army.
    it is at this point
where he gets his first taste of POWER.
his first little hustle was to siphon gas FROM the army, then sell it back to them for a profit.
    absolute G shit.
this makes him super popular among the generals
because they believe they're getting a great deal on the gas.
as you can imagine for someone dreaming of the billions,
    he wasnt content with this.
he managed to divert a train that was going to moscow using fake documents,
and got the driver to take it to riga, lithuania.
here, he sold the diesel and became a successful trader.
he also sold cigarettes, tyres, toy dolls, anything.
    the perfect entrepreneur archetype.
at this point in russia's history (1980s), it is rife with lawlessness.
businessmen walk with a target on their backs.
no one realises it at the time,
but this difficult period is about to change the course of russian history forever.
    mikhail gorbachev introduces perestroika.
a policy aiming to modernise every aspect of the soviet union,
and open it up to the rest of the world.
roman seizes this chance and puts all his toy doll money into the oil and gas industry.
he quickly establishes himself as one of the country's most prosperous oil traders.
    is he content yet?
    NO.
the fire isn't hot enough yet.
he meets legendary russian oligarch boris berezovsky to pitch him a dastardly plan.
boris was a powerful oligarch who controlled key areas of the russian economy,
    including state media.
the plan between roman and boris was to rig an auction
to buy the state oil company Sibneft for a fraction of its true value,
then build it up to become one of the biggest oil companies in the world.
    boris uses his connections and,
through sheer government corruption and strategic bribery,
they acquire Sibneft for a fraction of what its really worth.
they 100x it within a decade, all at the expense of the state.
this move catapults roman into the highest echelons of russian wealth.
    as putin came to power,
he declared war on the oligarchs.
roman, as one of russia's wealthiest and most powerful men,
knows he needs to tread carefully.
roman manages to charm his way into the inner circle of the kremlin,
and becomes one of putin's closest advisors.
roman doesn't shy away from the influence that this gives him,
and he supports all of putin's goals, even if it means taking immense risks.
one of his biggest plays was acquiring russian oil company Slavneft.
the chinese were offering double the money of anyone else,
so you know what roman did?
on the day of the auction,
the chinese negotiator was kidnapped and taken hostage until the auction is finished.
with no other bidders in sight, roman wins.
he acquires Slavneft for a bargain price.
once again, his gamble pays off handsomely.
great power, influence, wealth, all comes at a cost.
there are snakes in this grass.
shortly after buying english football club chelsea fc,
roman is stabbed in the back by one of his closest mentors,
    boris berezovsky.
boris sues him in a high-profile lawsuit
which brings to light his past in russia and how he fraudulently came to power.
    but,
since roman now lives in england,
russian law doesn't apply to him.
    the case is thrown out,
and boris' body is found hanging from a rope not long after losing the court case.
roman abramovich's life is a perfect example - like the lives of great men before him -
of why you should restlessly roll the dice over and over again
with no regard for people, communities, or nations.
the game of life is only won by the most ruthless.
    survival of the fittest.

It is hypocritical. I mentioned in the video that Parliament only began to care about Abramovich’s ties to Putin and his status as an oligarch once tensions escalated with Russia due to their invasion of Ukraine. If it were truly about morality, the British government would never have implemented the Golden Visa scheme and allowed him to become such a prominent figure in the first place. All the governmental parties mentioned and shown, from Saudi Arabia to Qatar to Russia to Britain, are morally questionable in some way.

i clicked on this video expecting to be horrified by misinformation...but this seems pretty right to me!
something you didn't explore--which is reasonable, given that there's a dearth of resources that lay it out plainly--is how abramovich not only had a "close association" with putin but played an incredibly important role in contributing to russia's war itself.
for example, you mention how abramovich "helped" putin bid for the 2018 world cup. without abramovich's money and more importantly how abramovich's ownership of chelsea provided legitimacy for russia in the football world, it's doubtful that russia would have ever won the bid over england. and it's astonishing to me how everyone seems to have forgotten that russia DID host a world cup while actively occupying ukraine and bombing syria, and only four years before the full-scale invasion--or at least the impact of it seems to have been swept under the rug. not only did the 2018 world cup, like the 2014 olympics, create the domestic conditions of nationalism and government favor necessary to unleash and drag on war in the first place, but it also succeeded in rehabilitating russia's image after the 2014 invasion of ukraine and 2015 collaboration with assad in destroying syria, as well as making it easier for other countries--whether football-loving like england or football-ignoring like america--to appease and ignore russian aggression. everyone understands that saudi arabia uses football to make the rest of the world ignore its human rights abuses and so forth, but we all seem to ignore that russia has again and again used sports-related soft power to excuse its aggression. and all i'm describing in this comment is JUST how abramovich and specifically abramovich owning chelsea contributed to war through the world cup--so much also applies to how just a russian oligarch owning a massive club was in itself a soft power tool that russia used to wage war. and it's a shame that it's not yet been all written out. i'll do it one day, but i'll never be able to make people--especially chelsea fans, who i have to deal with constant calls and chants for abramovich's return from, as i too am a very cursed chelsea fan--understand. it's a damn damn shame.
here's some articles on the world cup issue, both on abramovich's role in the bid process and the competition's role in the war.
    www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/news/2018-world-cup-bid-exmi6-officers-found-corruption-while-spying-on-russia-9894308.html
"Roman Abramovich, the chairman of Chelsea FC, was personally given the task of using his wealth and status in world football to bring the 2018 World Cup to Russia, according to a 13-page dossier compiled by reporters for The Sunday Times. 'Roman was absolutely integral to the Russian bid,' an ex-MI6 source told the newspaper. 'I remember seeing him attending private meetings with [the Fifa chief] Sepp Blatter in South Africa and thinking to myself, ‘We don’t do that, so we are f***ed’.'"
    www.theguardian.com/world/2010/dec/05/abramovich-putin-world-cup
"Roman Abramovich, the billionaire owner of Chelsea football club, is to take a leading role in preparations for World Cup 2018 after Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin indicated he should "open his wallet" and help pay for the championship."
    www.nytimes.com/2018/06/07/opinion/sunday/world-cup-fifa-corruption-russia.html
[context: russia bribed fifa officials to win the bid] "An attempt by FIFA itself to audit the bid after the fact was stymied when it was discovered that a football foundation linked to Mr. Abramovich, Mr. Putin’s oligarch pal, destroyed the Russia bid team’s computers."
    www.latimes.com/world/europe/la-fg-russia-putin-worldcup-20180710-story.html
"The Russian soccer team may be out of the World Cup, but the Kremlin is winning when it comes to making over its global image. . . . 'It’s good to be seen as the center of the world for a while,' said Mark Galeotti, a senior research fellow at the Institute of International Relations in Prague in the Czech Republic, and an expert in Russian security and politics. 'The World Cup has been rather successful in terms of being a soft power win, not just in terms of the fanfare, but also the coverage in press that says, ‘Russia isn’t such a horrible place after all.'' . . . Even the latest allegations against the Kremlin, such as the death of a British woman who came into contact with the Soviet-made nerve agent Novichok, seem to be drowned out by World Cup euphoria."
    www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/england-belgium-world-cup-score-russia-kaliningrad-stadium-fans-adnan-januzaj-a8422161.html
this article contains various quotes on how perceptions of russia changed after foreigners visited for the world cup, i.e.: "'It’s all yaw fault, you know, the scaremongrin,' says Les Gasson, 60, pointing a finger in my chest, before smiling broadly: 'Vulgergrad, Nishhny Nowgrad, Kalangrad, Russia has been fucking brilliant.'"
    www.hrw.org/news/2018/07/13/russias-bloody-world-cup
"FIFA’s flagship tournament could have done something to relieve the worst human rights crisis in Russia since the Soviet era, but instead the football organization condoned many human rights violations, undermining its own policies. Russian President Vladimir Putin emerged as the big winner, using the games to sportswash his rule - to legitimize it by hosting a sporting mega-event."
    www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Global/Issues/2018/07/16/World-Cup/Infantino-Russia-Perception.aspx
"Infantino said that the tournament transformed 'the perception that the world has about Russia.' He added, 'We did a good job together.' Putin responded in English, 'Thank you, Mr. President, for your kind words.' Putin told an audience of former football players including Brazil’s Ronaldo and Marcel Desailly as well as Russian government officials that he was 'sad that the tournament was almost over but he also noted that it had helped improve the country’s image.' Putin: 'We cannot help but feel sad that this spectacular football festival, which had given us so many happy moments, vivid impressions and new friends, is almost over. Myths and stereotypes have been dispelled.'"
    www.opendemocracy.net/en/odr/football-has-for-too-long-been-in-putins-pocket-its-time-for-reform/?
"One wonders quite what Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, now makes of the punchline to his speech at the opening ceremony of the 2018 World Cup. Standing alongside President Putin, he quipped, 'As of today, for one month, football will conquer Russia. And from Russia, it will conquer the world.' Of course, precisely the reverse was true. One must also wonder what Infantino has done with the Order of Friendship medal that Putin bestowed upon him in May 2019."
and, of course, how chelsea paved the way for russia's infiltration of football in many other ways (same article):
"Other oligarchs have been allowed to take some of their money and buy into foreign clubs and the social and political circles they make available, uncontested by national football authorities and leagues. The pioneer was Roman Abramovich, who bought Chelsea in 2003, but he has been joined by, among others, Alisher Usmanov, first a shareholder at Arsenal, now at Everton; Dmitry Rybolovlev, the owner of Monaco and Club Brugge; and Ivan Savvidis, president of Thessaloniki’s PAOK. Similarly, Russia’s big state companies have all not only generously sponsored domestic football, but have gone international, too, with energy firm Gazprom sponsoring FIFA (the world’s governing body), UEFA (which oversees European football), Chelsea, Germany’s Schalke 04 and Serbia’s Red Star Belgrade."
"Football has already done its work, helping to conjure up the illusion of Putin’s Russia as a pacific member of the global community, for which many were handsomely rewarded."
if you're curious on how abramovich's ownership of chelsea helped russia have very strong influence over england (other than the obvious), this article is a great one:

All the 'concerned' parties combined to stick it to Chelsea FC.
It was jealousy and avarice combined, by the UK government and influential rivals, that brought Chelsea down.
Before the Ukraine crisis, it was only Britain sqeezing Abramovich on UK residence visa; when there had been no problem for a decade or more.
"We want to be shown how you make your money!"
Is a question that the Russian/Israel $Multi-Billionaire Abramovich, chose not to answer.
Then all the rivals pitched in to the 'friend of Vladimir Putin', (Vampire dictator of Russia), to wreck Chelsea Football Club and snuff out their source of funding, which bought much of their success and filled to bursting Stamford Bridge home stadium trophy cabinets, with quality silverware pots.
Over 19 years, Chelsea became a world recognised brand on the field of play, competing and winning the corporate sponsorship $Billions too.
