Jim branch predicting Linus questions.
Bro gonna spectre meltdown linus
Speculative answering
While Jim may be technically correct about the ISA making no difference in terms of performance due to sophisticated prediction, there is a big measurable advantage of genuine RISC in terms of efficiency and power consumption.
Hyper-threding
@@aladdin8623 Citation please, I don't think anyone has run a comprehensive set of x86 vs RISC performance-per-watt benchmarks.
I could listen to Jim Keller for hours
There's more on YT to keep you fed.
Linus: Knows how to build computers.
Jim Keller: Knows how to BUILD COMPUTERS.
One of the few humans that if sent back in time, could actually reinvent the computer from scratch
Every Jim Keller interview I literally sit down and don’t get up until it’s over. His insight is just so fundamental and his experience so deep it’s incredible. Needless to say, great guest and thanks for publishing the clip!
I'm glad this got it's own clip, but the fact that the stream was titled over nothing burger youtuber news instead of fking Jim Keller will always be funny to me. I actually can't remember a word of the headline topic.
What do you honestly think is going to get general audiences to click?
@@Ragnorok64 To be fair, the title confused me so much when I first saw it that I had to click. I'm still wondering wtf HIPPOCRATIC-AL is supposed to mean
@uponeric36 It's a pun based on the hippocratic oath that doctors take to do not harm, and "hypocritical." Some detractor of Marques tried to invoke that is if reviewers are obligated to do no harm to the companies whose products they review.
@@Ragnorok64Because to them companies are people.
I wish interviewers would focus more on the answers their guests give than just impulsively move to the next question. There's a lot of stuff here that was begging for a follow-up question to get some more depth.
@ask.repeat Hopefully they will be answered in next interviews.
Exactly. Jim says something wildly interesting, and the response is not to engage, clarify, elaborate, ask deeper, but just go to the next question 😢
@@LucasKunneman I assume they wanted to cover as much variety topics as possible in limited time. There is just to much good information at higher levels of every profession. And not enough time.
Linus is fanboying hard lol
for good reason too, this guy is a living legend.
he's a semi conductor god
@@v000000000000v he is. It was great to watch how excited linus was to speak to the guy.
I am as well, that guy is amazing
Understandable
You need to do more of these interviews now... Get more people like him ... Its so amazing

Quite literally one of the best shows you have done. Great to have Jim on. Very sobering to here his take on AI.
Fun fact: Jim Keller's wife Bonnie is the sister of Canadian author and clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson.
Must be completely insufferable at family gatherings.
how did jim keller get sucked into that family , wow . its like oil and water
@@user-fv8ur4bm1qlol, does it give you strange feelings to imagine they may be close friends? Imagine that….
This is one of the best videos on the LMG channels with regards to influence on those who are studying this. Lex Friedman has a great interview with him as well.
This video is eerie. This man just sold me on simulation theory 😳
no offense but you don't look very hard to convince
If we are in a simulation one day we will build a computer fast enough to crash the computer we're running on
@@wing0zero not necessarily, the simulation might have thought about that and limited resources
I don't think he was even arguing for that. And it's just a fine tuning argument, nonsense as actual evidence.
@@Rugg-qk4pl He was just joking about it yes
Actually a really great interview! The questions were really good and really brought the conversation further forwards
Holy smokes that was fun. Thanks Jim
Thank you very much for that interview, that was very interesting to watch and hear!
i've watched this on the WAN show and watched twice, so far, on LMG clips. such a great tech-chat!
That was great! Thanks Jim for your time
Awesome interview. I can completely understand the enthusiasm Linus. And congratulations with the compliment on being pretty smart.
Excellent interview! Thanks to you guys for showing this and to Jim Keller for gracing us with his time and presence
He is such a legend. Like a true rock star.
This is a video that everyone needs to watch. It is one of those video that you see once in 5 or 10 years.
The guy is a pure greatness
So excited for this!
Linus's ADHD kickin' in. He struggles to not intrerrupt Jim and you can see it in his face =))))
Send this man a microphone! I can barely hear him 🤣
This interview was amazing !
I get to watch it again!
10:00 there was multiple architecture CPUs systems way in the back but not in same package as well as multi CPU setups before multicore became a thing on PC, arcade platfroms seems to be good example of that if you even played with MAME, but it add complexity so quastion is if it's needed
You guys should go out and visit his place, see what he has going on there.
I would have also mentioned him working on DEC Alpha, which was a very technically advanced and forward-looking CPU architecture at the end of the 90s, way ahead of its time. Unfortunately it didn't work out in the market.
My brain always expands listening to Jim
Brilliant interview, I love this openness and honesty, what a great guy
linus learn to not interrupt your guest when they are talking , you were so annoying and disrespectful at times ,
just wait until they finish talking, you need to listen when Jim Keller talking .
My goal in life is to become a architect, and this interview is the first of it's kind I've found. Thanks for this.
Awesome interview! What an interesting man.
Awesome interview
This guy is brilliant! Great interview.
Very cool interview, Jim Keller is a chip wizard, visionary and innovator. Only if sound quality especially volume unbalancing between Jim and LMG would be fixed before releasing this vid.
Awesome interview. Jim Keller is a champion, but also, super chill.
around large objects (planets to black holes), time slows down. to mach to compute so the fps lowers.
10:13 i was wondering this for so many years. Because imo the best way to transition to ARM or RISC-5 is to put both chips in 1 system. Let the application that runs best on ARM use the arm chip and code it with arm and let the system do its thing with the least amount of resistance.
What is the benefit , you still end up paying licensing fees to ARM
this is one of the best wan show clips ever 😊
Jim AI style training one of his daughters versus programming the other daughter to teach them how to drive. LOL!
Can a 1 hour video be classed as a clip?
Undoubtedly yes
It's a clip from a video? So I guess it counts
Can 100 hours of video from a 110 hour VOD be called a clip?
Yes.
Clip doesn't necessarily mean short-form
Noo!!!
😂 Honestly I don't care, but I felt the need to be the opposition for this comment. I got you @AdamSibbs
I loved it, really really loved it. ❤ I just missed a question about how many fps we can get in crysis in the future (meaning how far can we go with single thread performance in foreseeable future)
GET HIM BACK ON
didn't even realize the video was ending until they said they were going to let him go such a good interview
Jim is chill as hell low key
29:53 The amount of clear thinking from having had to actually work in the real world a computing, makes me almost euphoric.
58:20
what about the video You is Two by CGP Grey?
I know there is an element of latency issues they are fighting with, but they seem to have a hard time knowing when each other are finished talking
It's kinda wild how much latency there was. Maybe they were using skype or something
would love to see one of these with john carmack!
The Open Source thing is 100% true. I was a Windows fanboy and loved gettin the latest phone, now after i tried Linux and Lineage, im never going back.
great video i would love to see a tech nerd podcast channel where you guys interview ultra talented people of the tech industry with questions from the audience … i guess kind of like what lex fridman does but with more audience involvement 🙈
This would be cool
Wow wow wow. Loved it
I'm a masters CompSci (informatics) student in Germany. I am super interested in hardware related topics and I took lots and lots of architecture and hardware related courses, but I have no idea how to get a job in this field. I always feel like I got into the wrong field and should've instead studied ECE. I want to pivot into more hardware related stuff but I don't feel like I have the right qualifications for a job in the industry, and it seems to me the only way to get those qualifications is to get one of those jobs and learn on the job. I appreciate any insightful suggestions...
Get a simpler job where you can learn everything and then pivot 6-12 months later
How hard can that be
@AtaGunZ Yes Jim said it in this video: If you want work with more brain then go study, if you want on hands experience, experimenting then only way is to do the job. No job is permanent, just work couple months, or years before you got bored, and then change job. As he mentioned, he has worked in many jobs, and he was electrical engineer by profession.
My god, I love this dude! He's so good
I knew saw that logo before, it’s Sam Zeloof’s company
Imagine interviewing the most important/successful hardware engineer currently working in silicon….. and interrupting him CONSTANTLY. WTF
They had huge latency issue afaik. Also Linus is not a professional interviewer or so, this is a kind of private conversation put live. Those would be my two top arguments
@@heni63 o.k. in fairness, I probably wouldn't have been able to contain my ADHD having ass either.
@@toddstewart4579 Iam also like this. Id be exploding I guess, exaggeratedly expressed
I agree with you. Linus is so used to being the "smartest guy in the room", my take is that he didn't quite know how to wrangle this interview. We got at least 80% of the value from Mr. Keller anyway.
Honestly, there is so much good information in this short clip it's scary.
Linus was so excited for this interview. And then he called him a rat 😂.
When did he call him a rat?
Well he clapped back with what are you doin 😂❤
@@Aspire705 He didn't call Jim a rat, he called AMD workers that was leaving sinking AMD, but Jim joined at that time, not left.
Jim is just in another level
Would by my dream job to work for Jim and his team.
I liked that very much!
Linus before you were born, he codesigned the Dec Alpha EV6!. The best microprocessor ever built.
Jim’s the man
🖤
THIS is one of the real Gs!
The delay was brutal but we deal with it because he's a legend
They need to extend our tender distance
Wow
gpu is also simple to port.
Will the AI in the modern CPU's and GPU's take away choice from the user - or will we be able to turn it off and use its functions - MANUALLY?
❤
It's because Open Source is the future: What do you think is going to power Spaceships and Space-wide transportation?
Open source doesn't mean free right?
👏👏👏👏
Stop interrupting Jim Keller!
Le Keanu Reaves of the chip industry! 😂
Next time Linus just let him ask the questions you should have.
Oh damn, nice. I learned about Jim Keller after his appearance on Lex Fridman's podcast. So, now there's one degree of separation between Lex and Linus, which would be quite a cool crossover imo.
One of the few times Linus meets with someone more knowledgeable and seasoned than him. Pretty interesting to see Linus in the position I am in. I am much less experienced than basically everyone that watches these types of videos.
I love how I know nothing about pcs I'm just listening cause it sounds interesting
AI is real, but the stock hype was stupid. Anyone could see from a mile away that you ride the wave up and then short everyone early before everyone woke up.
That was actually worth a listen. Enjoyed that, remember kids, use Linux.
Nintendo has already sued this video
Let him speak for an hour. He will answer questions that are not even in your notes.
46:32 5 billion lines of code written by a 100 people over 5 years? i think he meant to say 5 million. 5 billion is not 10 million, 20 million, 50 million, 100 million... - it's 5000 millions.. lmao
Love some Jim Keller content!
But Linus, please let your guests answer how long they want to answer. Jim often wanted to talk more, you cut him off. I know you was very exited:)
fanboying hard
Isn't he also one of the director of Midjourney? That should of got a mention. But it's Jim K. We would be here all night if mention everything he did.
I really hope this leads to an AI toaster.
This is a great interview, however the number of adverts (every few minutes) really destroy the contiunuity🤥
phd is minimum for flipping burgers nowadays, just tellin u
great video call latency lol
Family member of Jordan Peterson. Nice.
The ai emulated gaming stuff is painful
out of all the people to interview jim keller..........................you?
The thumbs up is not adequate.
At least Linus didn’t say hard R in this one
Doesn't a true AI model not only use human generated data sets, but also relies on the machine itself to form new possibilities? And that can produce some DISASTROUS RESULTS?
That future sounds bleak.
