  • Hello Shiny Crafty People and welcome!
    Today I’m covering 10 amazing gifts for quilters and sewists and you’ve just got to see them!
    Here’s a list with links as promised in the video:
    1. Scissors. I really love the Proshears from Amazon. In June 2024, the 10 inch ones that I use were under $20! Link: amzn.to/3xkwH50
    2. Rotary Cutter. I will vouch for Olfa for as long as they keep making such quality rotary cutters. I prefer the ones with the safety button and trigger. I use the big 60mm for most things but the 45mm works great too for general cutting. Link: amzn.to/4clSRTb
    3. Rotating Mat. I love this rotating mat for when I need to cut all sides of something, especially a quilt square. Check out the one I bought here: amzn.to/45nNmB6
    4. Large Mat. We buy huge ones for our office at speedpress.com, but you can get a good-sized one that’s 24”x36” for less. Here’s a great link: amzn.to/4ejX1g9
    5. Travel Iron. I love my Homever iron, but you can find other ones like it online for a number of price points. Here’s the link to the one like I use (might be different color): amzn.to/3XpO2UW
    6. Wool Pressing Mat. The one I use is quite small but even a good 18”x24” one is still less than $40. Check out this one: amzn.to/3z2UFSL
    7. Snap Tool and Snaps. I’m looking forward to making a bunch of small bags and pouches with this thing! This is the one I bought for myself: amzn.to/3XpOiDo
    8. Task Lighting. The right task lighting makes all the difference. Here’s the one I showed in the video: amzn.to/3VIDcI8
    9. Serger. This one is a HUGE purchase and costs as much as five of each of the previous items combined! So don’t just trust my judgement. Still, if you want to start your research by looking at what we use in our workshop, here’s a link: amzn.to/3XqHwxa
    10. Gift Certificate. This one doesn’t need a recommendation from me. Just ask for a gift certificate to your favorite fabric or quilt store!!
    I hope you enjoyed this list and you can hand it off to someone in your life who wants to buy you a gift in the future.
    And until next time, Stay Crafty!! Bye for now.

    For #10, I have a friend who takes me to the fabric store, gives me a limit and then just watches me shop. She told me that she gets more pleasure out of watching me shop than she does spending that money on herself.

    My hubby bought me a Brother serger. I found a video with step by step process on my model of Brother serger and that was the ONLY way for me to rethread my machine. The instruction book didn't really help me. So CZcams video on your specific serger model will help a lot. Thank you Timothy!!!

    the scissors you linked- I totally agree. I bought two sizes of them. WELL worth the money. I did buy more as gifts for people.
    the wool pressing mat - I use wool felt. works quite well. I do not have a lot of space so I can roll the felt up and tuck it away easily.

  • @karenboyd6293
    @karenboyd6293 Před měsícem +9

    it's important to remember that your idea of good sissors will be differet from mine. However the scissors that are best for you are VERY important. A point to thing about with rotary cutters is that they don't allways work fora left hander. I agree about cheap blades, byt my dealer sells generic in bulk and I haven't noticed them not working less. But I do mark my used blands for cutting stuff other than fabric. But I have all the sized. A pinking blade can be hard on your cutting ruler. I agree and have a variation of every item, except a gift card. My list doesn't end with yours. I want ALL the THINGS I see on your and other channels and around me. LOL And an addition on my house to store them.

    • @timothytotten9409
      @timothytotten9409  Před měsícem

      Good points. We tried generic blades in our sewing workshop for about a year and went through three times as many of them. The cost analysis at the end of the year told us that the name brand blades were a better buy for our needs.

    Great gift ideas! For occasional sewing people, I think good thread, needles and some kind of organizer would be a nice gift. And the best would be a basic skills book for craft or garment sewing depending on the person's preference.

    this is a very lovely video. I would suggest a bias tape maker set, either in individual components or a set of all three. One set is metal folding devices to use with an iron, another is a set of plastic folders that are clipped to the ironing board, and the third is a clear presser food with marked guides for attaching bias uniformly in one pass. A video demonstrating these would be great, as well as a video showing how to apply bias by machine to inside and outside corners, as well as to curves. With recycling in mind, there are lots of garments whose fabric isn’t my taste for an entire outer section of a bag, for example, but which are fine for a lining or bias binding. It can be surprising how a very large print can be less than appealing but have the right colors in smaller pieces, such as for binding. There are different excellent videos out there showing the different ways to cut bias strips, many of which are great “busy work” while watching TV or a film. Shirt strips of bias are great for the corners of our zipper bags, and since they are inside, they don’t have to be exactly alike.

    I do have many of your suggestions (I admit to an addition to scissors. X mostly the smaller ones!!!). Those wool pressing mats are the best thing (next to ice cream!) - I love mine! What really caught my eye was the snap set - something I’ve been wanting - not sure why - but I’d like to make some items that require some type of closure for gifts, etc (and me!!). A rotating mat is a necessity as I can’t walk around my tables (at least at the moment!) but I have several different brands and sizes and they are great. But the best gift for me is a gift card! My husband has inky been in a quilt shop once in the 45 years I’ve been obsessed with fabrics, etc. and that was for a quilt shop gift card. He gives me gift cards at Christmas which makes my heart sing! Thanks for all the ideas - I’m going to your list and check on that snap set.

    I used my wool mat while it was on my cutting mat and it warped badly. I then placed it directly on my glass dining room table, and although it didn’t crack it the glass was so hot I burned my hand when I took the mat off to put it away. Please be careful as the wool mats are not that thick - they do retain heat when ironing and do affect what is underneath

    The steam will go through wool pressing mats so you need absorbent waterproof surface under them. It will ruin your surface if you don’t. Olfa has a great rotating cutting mat. I’ve had mine for many years. I would suggest investing in better scissors. A good scissor like Ginger, Kai, etc are a game changer. They are so sharp that they make cutting effortless even with thick layers.

    Gift cards and "gift receipts"...my thoughts. When you buy a gift card, you've spent cash that is good at JoAnn, Michael's, Hobby Lobby, or ??, and turned it into something that's limited to only one store. And "Gift receipts" are frequently limited when returning your item to getting only store credit. Again limiting where your gift recipient can shop. I shop for gifts using CASH and get individual, regular receipts. I explain to the gift recipient that they can return the item for CASH, and proceed to shop anywhere they prefer. Or I just give cash and a hand written note. This is a lesson I learned 45 years ago when my MIL gave me cash to buy any baby stroller I wanted. Love and miss her.
