I don’t understand the tcg game that much but I love the card art
I remember candyevie talked about them a long time ago
My favorite is the one with the Tepig line. Its so cute watching the family grow up with their favorite mon
I have these too, I love them as well!
Card art story has always been the best part for me, finally someone recognises it
I appreciate that you can't find a single happy cubone art out there.
As it should be.

I admit the XY stories are really cool and the little details in the arts are awesome. But the SunMoon part was streching it too much, it's just names that sound cool and thematically appropriate.

This is my favorite part of the yugioh card art. Nearly all of them include a reference to some other card, and then there's the huge duel terminal, world legacy, and ecclesia storylines
“The cards tell a story”
the cards. the cards. the cards will tell: the past, the present and the future as well.

If you like Cardsartwork telling a Story i think you shoud look in the Yugioh Cards. Some exempels: The Worm Lore / The Apoquill / World Challace
*laughs in war of the spark*
There's actually another new story one, thought it was cool! Its smeargle running through the woods leaving its trail, then many pokemon like eldegoss and some others im forgetting are seen in the same place with the original trail in the scene
wasn't aware Pokemon cards could have a mini story with them, aww
Is a common trend in card games, yogioh did before pokemon but it is uncertain who exactly started
Magic the gathering does it all the time actually, it’s pretty cool
@@JujuInFlames I mean MTG writes entire Novels about their lore lol, MTG Lore is like a big part of MTG, Yugioh has like some interesecting stuff, but only like the Duel Terminals have like huge worlds explored
I find it funny that Gnoggin is right about the "reboot" theory from long ago, just in a different format.
Fun fact: the Poké Ball on the back of the cards is wrong. The button is supposed to be connected to the red half of the ball, not the white half. The early Japanese cards used to have this problem, but they were eventually fixed. Now you can't unsee it.
The XYZ portal sets are soo deep and seem scary I got goosebumps from watching it.

I love it when the card art has this kind of depth to it. I've seen a lot of trading card games but none of them have cards that tell a continuing story the same way some of these Pokemon TCG cards do (except for maybe the flavour text in the Duel Masters cards).
actually a lot of yugioh cards do tell a story in their art, look up the goblin of greed story which is the most famous of them
@@BrenTenkage Yugioh does have a lot of stories in their cards however I don't think the Goblin of Greed is even top ten in popularity. The most common stories covered which are also some of the best are - World Legacy, Legendary Six Samurai and the story of Gagagigo
I suggest diving into magic the gathering for card art storys then, I saw a bunch when i played for a bit.
I’ve never been so early
Gah that charmander series is adorable
Same here, and I agree.
Yugi-oh cards also makes stories with the cards (monster, magic and traps). Some of them are even interconnected with other stories. A good example of this would be Gagagigo, Warrior lady of the wasteland and Marauding Captain (monster cards). All them have their own stories. Maybe you could make a video about those as well.
My favorite Yu-Gi-Oh story is the Warrior of Zera one and the interconnected Duel Terminal archetypes.
Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic: The Gathering do the same thing.
It's why I still love them.
Yugioh has some of the best storylines to be a good anime in my opinion especially the duel terminal stuff and the world chalice cards dogmatika group fits as one as well
I love it when cards have stories. Good vid idea!
I was legit talking about the charmander evolving with his trainer cards to my friends over discord two days ago. So good
I loved the ORAS Team Magma and Aqua set for how much it established the rivalries and inner workings of their lives. The way they perform recon, sabotage, attack, defend, rescue. Its silly like when Team Magma laughs as their Arons happily eat away at Team Aqua's ship, it's serious like when Camerupt is transporting an injured Magma grunt away from an explosive battlefield. It immerses their dynamic more than any other depiction and I love it.
I know you're from Oregon, but the "Azoth" and "It's all coming together" stuff again is making me think you spend too much time there
There's also a team aqua's grimmer and muk card from the double crisis set that tells a tragic story of two magma grunts hiding from a grimmer then the grimmer evolving into a muk and devouring them it gets kinda dark, I think it also doubles as a reference to "the thing".
Aw yeah Saya Tsuruta is my favorite TCG artist too! She has a Twitter where she posts her art frequently and all the other cool work she does for Pokemon like Pokemon Cafe graphics and the Japanese manhole covers, very fun to follow!
Not only is someone talking about the Emboar line cards, but it happens to be you! Awesome.
7:27 The way he just said “…And Breloom was here at some point too.” in a deep, cool voice was hilarious for some reason.
The TCG is said to take place primarily in a region called Holon.
My favorite cards that tell a story are the Natu and Bouffalant cards. In the Natu card, we see two poor Natus freezing to death in a snowstorm, and Bouffalant can be seen walking towards them in the background. Then, in Bouffalant's card, the Bouffalant is happily walking along while keeping the Natus safe and warm in its afro. That is just so adorable and heartwarming. 😍 I also like the Tepig, Pignite and Emboar cards that show Tepig growing up with its family.
Yugioh cards do this sometimes too. One of my favorites has to be the cards depicting the oddly meta story of how Sangan wound up on the banlist or rather a jail in the "Forbidden Realms". It starts with Tour Bus From the Underworld but later gets off at a platform the bus stops at and mistakes Tour Bus To Forbidden Realms for his bus, which Tardy Orc winds up missing because it's never been on the banlist, then on Shared Ride, Graceful Charity tries to comfort Sangan, then in Mistaken Arrest, everyone on the bus is arrested because there was a Pot of Greed on the bus, then in Mistaken Accusation, Sangan and Witch of the Black Forest (who was banned and unbanned at the exact same times as Sangan for similar reasons due to her similar effect) and Sangan is _really_ upset. Sadly that's where the story ends, nothing further about them getting off the banlist.
I’m the kind of person who always collected to cards for the art. Glad to see a video like this :)
This, plus the art, are the only reason I still buy the cards.
I’ve never realized there were stories in the cards, that’s so cool for the people making the cards to have some fun doing so
Since there was a Yugioh reference at the very end, I think it’s worth mentioning that Yugioh has some fairly decent card storylines of its own. Duel Terminal, Atlantean/Fire King/Mermail, Unlucky Goblin, Different Dimension, S-Force, Warrior Dai Grepher, Goblin of Greed, Dark Ruler, Skull Servant, Visas Starfrost, World Legacy, and my personal favorite; Dogmatika/Abyss are all pretty good. And plenty of archetypes tell stories all by themselves.
4:30 when I was in 3rd grade, my friend and I found those meowth and inkay cards, and we were super proud that we noticed the story!
Every time i click one of your videos, there is a chance that i will have flashbacks to "It all comes together", and i'm all for it
I'm so glad that there are mentions of the breakthrough, breakpoint and dates collides cards
I thought I was the only person that noticed sometimes
Do a contest where you analyze a couple of viewer-made fakemons and go over their origins
Tomokazu Komiya is my personal favorite pokémon artist. He draws them so goofy and off-model. Because of his carefree art style, it allows the pokemon to be more expressive and experimental. It’s so fun to look at.
There was the Cosmog lime in Celebrations (2021) where as Cosmog, Lillie was comforting Nebby, Cosmoem has Lillie sleeping with Nebby, and Solgaleo/Lunala have Lillie waving to Nebby.
I thought I was just over observant! Glad someone touched on this ( by the way your an awesome youtuber and I love your fakemon series )!
My favourites as a kid were these gen 2 cards of Ho-oh, Lugia and Scarmory(?!) flying over the Burnt Tower, the legendary dogs were running out, and Espeon and Umbreon were just chilling in the moonlight
This is why I love to collect pokemon cards, the story they tell is very interesting. The story told through breakpoint, breakthrough, and fates collide would probably make for an awesome tv show, even if ash had to be involved.
I reckon it would be AWESOME if we got a series that could portray these stories in these cards. I'd be keen to watch that 😁
That "World Collision" would be a cool premise for a pokemon game. A great reason for the protagonist to start their journey
This is the episode I have been waiting for especially since ygo cards do the same I love the stories
I'm Glad someone acknowledged the detail put into specific cards.
Thank you.
Man I love these kind of things. Back when I played magic, I often tried to piece together the narrative behind the different cards (though this was mostly done through the flavor text). One card game that does this kind of thing really well is the online ccg Legends of Runeterra. Like there is a card that depicts an old adventurer trying to warn the people in a tavern about something, but in the card of the tavernkeeper you can see that they don't take him seriously and just find it amusing. However then you also have all kinds of cards where the old adventurer meets different monsters in the wilderness, showing us why he is so afraid of the things that lurk outside. And a lot of cards do this, where we see how the different characters interact with each other (and that is not even going into the flavortexts or voice over which further add to this).
That Charizard story by Akira is one of my favorites, despite having so many full art cards and even a couple rainbows, I’m just really mad cause I don’t have the charmeleon
I love the stories in the art! My favorite is that Inkay and Meowth pair. But it just really draws me into the cards themselves and makes me appreciate them far more. I really like that they started to do it again with Battle Styles. For example the Pignite and Tyranitar.
01:26
got a reverse holo Pikachu like that and it's so nice to look at it
Legends of Runeterra also likes having storylines with it's cards. The most well-known is Cithria's journey, but there's a few others such as Chip's Targon tour.
Good lord, that last bit about Sun and Moon gave me MEGA flashbacks
two of my favorite Yugioh archetypes is 6 Samurai and Buster Blader.
Six Sam tells the story of multiple generations of samurai and ninja fighting against the Shogun, Shien, and there is a story shown in a series of cards depicting a botched assassination attempt where the Legendary Six fail to assassinate Shien and his counselor and leading to an all out attack between Shien and one of the Samurais, culminating in an Evenly Matched duel.
almost all of the Buster Blader cards are about the titular Buster Blader (a Dragon Slaying Swordsman) raising a baby dragon he rescued through the years and needing to slay his adopted child once it grows to powerful and destructive as an adult.
Been awhile since I last heard you talk about Pokemon being connected to alchemy, glad to see you bring it up here!
Thank you for talking about Pokemon card art like this. Lately it's felt like the only thing people care about is the value of a card, so it means a lot to see someone that sees them like I do.
Can we get a revisit to this, I absolutely love the worlds combine deck and art work. It’s so cool and encourages you to follow the story, figure out what’s happening
I had to rewatch most of the video because I kept getting g distracted by your background lights! They’re very hypnotizing!
I love cards that tell a story, look into the Yugioh Cards with their stories, plenty of hilarious ones like the Goblin of Greed or the Misadventures of King of the Skull Servants and his family
I was only really aware of the Swablu and Charmeleon one because I had them, I had no idea about an entire story written throughout tons of cards
As a kid growing up collecting around the time of XY, I always thought the art was… odd. Looking back now, (and watching this video) I really love the stories they tell.
Always love stories told via cards. It's interesting how they can tell so much with little to no words.
Personal favourite is one in Yu-Gi-Oh! Which is Risebell The Summoner's line of cards.
Yugioh has been doing these kind of story-telling too with multiple archetypes, if you are curious search for "Duel Terminal", "World Legacy" and the latest one is "Dogmatika".
I have an idea for a story,
Mudkip: A young girl plays with her Mudkip at the Beach.
Marshtomp: The girl becomes a teenager and meets a boy at school.
Swampert: The girl becomes an adult and marries the boy at a wedding.
My personal fav card art story. It starts with the mewtube card from Shining Fates, then mew busting mewtwo out of the tube in Unified Minds and finally an alt art promo card of mewtwo regretting being freed by mew.
The Steam Siege portion of the video is the most attention the set has ever been given. That should say a lot about that set.
My favorite story is the original Delta species series of card art where a lot of the cards communicate this delta region and scientific facility. It’s not even just a small set of a few linked Pokémon it’s an entire wave of cards that all hint at greater world building of the region. Shame the later waves dropped that.
Maybe I’m nostalgic but I actually really like the style of the gen 1 cg cards. As an art style they stick out and feel like they have personality
Pokémon cards are a more acceptable loot box for me because even if you didn’t get the card you wanted…you still got a physical card to hold onto or trade/sell back to others. Can’t do that with the digital ones so you’re just left dropping dollar after dollar for a cosmetic you’re not going to be able to use once you quit the game. I knew Yu-Gi-Oh cards did the story telling aspect even with full series sets but never knew Pokémon had their own version as well. These were great to see, thank you for the video!
Yugioh has some instances of this like with Gagagigo's corruption and redemption or Buster Blader and the dragon whelp. I always loved that they did that so it's great to know Pokemon has it too.
Oh my gosh, i never noticed these. I have a lot of the cards mentioned in this video too, the only one i really found out about when I was younger was Meowth and Inkay...
This is why i love this channel, thank you!
When I was a kid, I drew maps of the Team Magma and Team Aqua based on the locations and doorway visible on the art of the sets.
6:30 the natus one is so cute😩😢❤️
Lockstin: It all comes together
Me: *flashbacks*
Also me: *searching for that music video he did because it's a bop*
My favourite referential art is in one of the HGSS sets, in the art all the Pokémon all have type flags in the backgrounds, I think it's really cool haha
9:00 I cannot stop seeing Chikorita with red-painted lips...
I never knew about the story set of the Trubbish, Phione, and Empoleon and I honestly love it (mainly cause I have a heavy bias for Trubbish, love the dude)
3:21
I'm glad other Tepig are able to get a great future!
As a Magic the Gathering player, its really funny to me because every single set and expansion has a narrative line that's a part of the same big multiverse and storyline. So its strange that Pokémon also does that, but in the background instead of explicitly.
i got the trubbish and tepig cards, I love the Trubbish series cards the most because they're Pokemon that have no relation to each other, they're not in the same evolutionary line either.
These cards have always been my favorite, I collect cards solely because of the art of them, they are absolutely incredible.
I never realized the pink stuff on the bisharp card at 11:08 were portals and thought it was one of those iconic cherry threes
Card art is an underrated concept. I could just go through online card sites and look at the art for hours, because the way each artwork represents a given pokémon is unique and fascinating.
Also if you read back of any pack you get there is more lore added with each expansion. So in a way the TCG is its own time/ universe outside of the anime and video game worlds. One of my favorite x and y set was steam siege especially using the talonflame and Volcanian EX deck and then through XY era I played a Gardy EX which was a tanky deck ..also I kept pulling Gardy EX (it stalked me in card form lol).
The newest set has a really cute one with the Polchaigiest and Sinistchai full arts - it has a boy finding the prevo in a storehouse, and then the evo spending time with the boy - now an old man - in the same storehouse
I used to ADORE story telling cards when I was younger! The very first time I spotted two cards that were clearly related, it felt like I had found the secret to the universe!
What cards were they
2:52 Lockstin said that if a charmander’s tail flame it would die, I’ve seen a video saying that once a charmander dies it’s tail flame is put out, which is why charizard has been underwater multiple times without its tail going out in the anime
The first time I noticed this was this one card art with meowth and that one squid Pokémon where they were stealing berries from each other. Cute stuff
My personal favorite card with a backstory is the axew card in x and y breakthrough even if I don't quite understand it(either axew likes your fruit or is offended by your selection of berries)
these make me so happy!! thank you for making this video i just started getting back into pokemon cards and im mostly focusing on the art :)) this gave me a lot of new ones to look out for!
It's kinda nice seeing that most of my cards like 90% are from black and white and and so I've noticed a ton of these connections in the video too haha
Even cooler was the Pokemon interacting in snowy landscapes set up in Plasma Freeze and Chilling Reign
My Pokemon card folder is organised (very roughly coz i got bored halfway through coz i have so many cards lol) into artists. My Yuka Morii ones are all at the front coz I think she’s probably my favourite artist followed by Asako Ito who does the crochet pokemon, then a whole bunch of other artists I really like, such as Tika Matsuno.
I never noticed pokemon cards told stories, I recall having some like the meowth and inkay one but never realised it was a common thing that happened
8:35 I had one of those, an electric type charmander, as a kid. Unfortunately I lost it a day while going to school :(
My younger sibling & I just recently organized my cards that I collected when I was young. All the art is so gorgeous. I mainly collect because of the art and it's one the ways we bond as siblings 💙💙💙💙
