@@405OKCShiningOn she is free, Bernardo will *never* be free. I don't think any other crimes by either of them have come to light since their trials, so statute of limitations doesn't apply here. Her lighter sentence is because she agreed to full disclosure of Bernardo's activities in exchange for having some of the charges against her dropped. I don't agree with her light sentence, it's very controversial, just trying to explain why she's out now.

And "real time" in Canada was many, many years. The disappearances of the teenage girls were long-unsolved mysteries at the time. Before that, we watched in horror as a serial attacker (the "Scarborough rapist") was at-large but never caught. Years later, it turned out to have been Homolka's husband, Paul Bernardo. Also, a young Scarborough woman (Elizabeth Bains) went missing, and we all watched as her former boyfriend was convicted and imprisoned. Decades later, DNA evidence connected her death to Bernardo. The material on the video tape shown in court revealed Karla's extremely sadistic and psychopathic personality. She gave her husband instructions as he raped Tammy. What a waste of breath on our poor planet. And now she's free to raise her own family. She received a twelve year sentence, while Paul was sentenced to life without parole. Sickening, and just another example of institutionalized sexism. She received psychotherapy in prison, as well. And now she's free as a bird, raising her own family. Paul Bernadro was NOT offered any sort of deal, but remains behnd bars, where he shpuld be. However, Ms. Sex Freak should have rec'd the EXACT SAME SENTENCE--NO IMMUNITY, and I don't care how many times Paul beat her. She should have left him the second she discovered his background, called the autorities and had him arrested. She didn't do so, but instead became turned on by what he'd one. The facts of the matter are plain: she was given a lighter sentence because she was a so-called battered woman. Actual battered women should be morally OUTRAGED by this series of crimes, and I'm certain most are. Karla Pigmolka belongs in solitary confinemernt for the rest of her days. She complained to a friend that he was moping around while she wanted to have fun. The reason she got the sweetheart deal was because her lawyer had the video evidence which would have been enough to convict both without her testimony. The problem with the Hare psychopathy checklist is that it seems to be geared toward secondary psychopathy, violent criminals, and males. This would not apply to someone like Karla Homolka who is female, was not violent(although she was certainly a criminal), and leaned more toward primary psychopathy. It would also underrate a lot of corporate psychopaths. Even then, the 5/40 score she was given for the checklist was too damn low. She clearly shows a shallow affect, promiscuity, superficial charm, lack of empathy, lack of remorse, manipulativeness, and need for stimulation just to name some items on the list. Watching videos of her speaking and reading up on her life will make this very obvious. These are the fundamental hallmarks of psychopathy and it makes no difference is someone has a consistent history or criminal behavior or not, they are STILL a psychopath.

I was nearly abducted by Paul Bernardo in 1988 when I lived in Scarborough. Weirdly enough, I went to college with a guy who had a run in with them in St Catherines around the time they murdered Kristen French--He was 12 at the time and they already had a reputation for stalking kids. I also worked with a person who went to high school with her and she told me that Karla was deep into gothic stuff and was really into dark magic to the point it creeped out other people in the goth scene. She did a 360 in her look and personality when she met Paul becoming more preppy and he seemed to be a better influence on her.
I do not believe her 'submissive' defence. I think Karla is a person who is a highly manipulative, cruel chameleon and is very much a psychopath who came armed against a rather subjective test. She did not reveal there were tapes and her lawyer hid knowledge of them until she got her plea deal. She dressed up in what looked like Kristen French's high school uniform while doing the walk through and commented without emotion that her sister wanted a rug (?) and could they give it to her.
I sincerely believe that both she and Paul Bernardo went gleefully on hunting expiditions as a kind of twisted side hustle to make their relationship dangerous and exciting. I think she was thrilled to be a part of it, and got as much of a charge as he did. She should be in jail for life. How she lives now is meaningless--she has just learned to manipulate those close to her to her advantage. The fact she married her lawyer's brother has to be yet another red flag, she's just that good at twisting things into her favour.
She also studied psychology and I believe she has a degree in it now. She's really honed her manipulative skills into pure mastery. She still plays the victim every time she is exposed--She makes me sick.

Karla spoke to Paul about how she couldn't wait to have children with him, so that they could assault their kids together. Thankfully, they never had children with one another.
Also, it is unknown who actually killed Kristen and Leslie. Was it Paul or Karla? They each pointed the finger at one another.
Karla was very much involved in the assaults, as was later shown by the withheld video tapes of those assaults
She was involved in the drugging, assault, and death of her own little sister!
Then she volunteered at her childrens' schools after she was released from prison, even though that was a clear violation of her probation.
Kara's childhood friends admitted she was strong willed and bossy. She was an equal partner of Paul's, not his subordinate.

My partner is much more into "tough love" than I am, and a big part of why I can't get behind it (even as the parent of a rebellious teen) is Lesley Mahaffey. I learned about her in a criminal psych class many years before I had kids, and I've never been able to forget the horror that she and her parents must've suffered. All because of her poor parents' innocent, well-intentioned desire to teach her via tough love tactics.
When I think of how her parents must feel about the fact that it was their tough love (locking her out because she'd missed her curfew) which resulted in her torture and murder...I just can't even imagine the hell those poor people must be living in. As a parent myself, my heart goes out to them so, so much.
And, because of them and their horrific experience, I just can't ever contemplate doing anything like locking my kids out to teach them a lesson. You just never, ever can know when or where monsters in human form (like Bernardo and Homolka) might be on the hunt. If my own actions EVER put my beloved, precious kids in the way of monsters like them? Well, I literally can't even think about it.
Oh, and FWIW, I think that the idea of Karla being free and having access to children is terrifying beyond belief. I simply cannot comprehend the possibility that she was just a helpless victim of Paul. Unlike the wives/partners of Ridgway, Rader, Bundy, etc., I don't think for one minute that she didn't know what he intended, or that she wasn't a full, willing and enthusiastic participant in their crimes.
I do, however, feel tremendous pity for her children. For me, the fact that she deliberately had children, despite knowing what they'd be subjected to, is just one more example of her utterly callous, greedy, selfish and narcissistic character. They never asked for a despised monster as a mother, and never got a choice...just like all her other victims.

What always struck me was her vacant, dead look in the interviews she gave to media sometimes (I guess after the trial). Like she was heavily drugged or in pain, but it might have been a last try at "playing the victim" for her reputation. I really liked your analysis in general and especially the explanation of why a deal with her might have been important to make sure Paul never walked free again, although it's almost a consensus that her sentence wasn't enough.

Dr. Grande, thank you for the video.
I respectfully disagree with you in this one. I think that Karla was way more manipulative than the way she was portrayed by you in this video. She enjoyed what they did together. She enjoyed the power she had over their victims. If she did not save Leslie or Kristen is because she did not want to. She had plenty opportunities to do so, run away from the house and go to the police.
She did not do any of that. She probably enjoyed the power she had over the victims as much as Paul did.
She also may have been jealous of them.
It also seems important to keep in mind that before he met Karla, Paul was a sadistic serial rapist, but he hadn't killed anyone yet.
So I don't know to what extent Karla's influence was not a catalyst for him, or the two together, to commit the murders.
Stephanie Harlowe did a very deep and interesting analysis on this case on her channel called "The Ken and Barbie Killers" consisting of three parts. I highly recommend taking a look at it.

They were hidden in the bathroom ceiling behind pot lights. Upon viewing the tapes, they saw Homolka was just as complicit & the victim of no one but she was rendered immune of all charges regarding revelations from the tapes because of the Sweetheart Deal that was alreadyinplace. I remember this case well! Karla was not *that* submissive. As a teenager before she met Bernardo, she was known as a wild child, risk-taking and exhibited problem behaviour. She was difficult for her parents to control before she met Bernardo. Most of the "evidence" of her being an abused spouse was from her testimony, the only incident actually documented was with the flashlight. Maybe she was, maybe she wasn't. During the trial when discussing one of the victim's sexual inexperience, she was condescending about the 15 year old's lack of experience. None of these behaviours says submissive or abused spouse to me. She could not or did not express any empathy on the witness stand and deliberately withheld information form the police.

The same thing she had picked out Jane Doe who was a friend at work & she helped drug & assaulted her & was even seen in the tape assaulting her own sister! She only gave up when she thought Paul was capable of killing her; after prison, married her attorney moved out of the country for a while but then moved back. the Canadians citizens are making it hell for her which I think is a good thing and I do honestly feel sorry for her children to think that they had a mother that was capable of committing those kind of crimes!!

One major downside to the short sentence IMO (aside from the injustice), is that she was able to have kids. Even if she manages to pull off life as a good soccer mom, her kids are going to have some heavy stigma to carry around. I lived in St. Catharines when this happened. The "doctor" who performed the post-mortum on Karla's sister ruled an accidental death. I'll keep it short by stating she had a burn/mark FROM AN IRON. Before the murders, I was in need of a dr. Since he was my moms dr., I made an appt. All the way around his waiting room were camo hunting caps, a taxidermy example or two and several large quit smoking signs. The first thing he says w/o looking at me is "What's with all the tattoos?" I put my shirt back on and left.
Afterwards, when investigation started, he was the only dr. HEAVILY chastised. I believe the college of physicians reprimanded him, though I cannot clearly recall. The worst individual in the whole thing was the cops not searching a drop ceiling and Homolka's lawyer having video (found in the ceiling) and holding it for two weeks. Last I heard she's in Costa Rica or the Dominican with 3 kids fathered by her lawyer's brother. Her being taken out would be met with a ticker tape parade. My father lives virtually across from where Kristin French was snatched. The local police got a tip it was a cream coloured Camaro (a cream muscle car?) Must be all the retirees with bad vision. I will not say his name, but his gold 280Z was the car used. Lastly, in a video of her walking thru her house, she was asking the police what would happen to her furniture!!! I can't imagine the amount of people that would show at a parole hearing. It'd be '000s.

Karla Homolka initially lived on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe following her release from prison until she moved back to Canada and settled in Châteauguay; a suburb of Montréal. Karla's reason for living in the French-speaking Canadian province of Quebec is because she wouldn't be as much of a target for vigilante retribution as she would be in the English-speaking provinces of Canada.

Why would she continue to go along with helping her husband with his sick, perverted murders when, as you brought up, she had opportunities to go to law enforcement on several occasions to report what was going on? Fear of going to prison was likely one reason, but I can't see it as the sole reason.

It was difficult to listen to Dr. Grande refer to them by their first names only, which is his practise. However, using only their first names was jarring, as in Canada they are usually referred to by their full names or just their surnames. At the time, our nation was devastated by what they did and outraged at Homolka's sentence. Also, Bernardo is thought to be the Scarborough Rapist.
