How to deal with XBOX 360 unformatted HDD (Hard drive)

- This is a last-second tip for all the people who seem to have the same problem.
I've not been able to find any info about how to fix this the way I just did it obviously because they are afraid about formatting their hard drive with all their data stuck in it.
THIS VIDEO SERVES AS A REASON OF WHY YOU SHOULD ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR DATA ONTO A SEPERATE STORAGE DEVICE

Also, people have said that this could not be a 'fix', and it surely is not really a 'fix'. But I can assure you that re-downloading your games will be way better than buying a new hdd with NO MEMORY. So I hope some of you guys can understand that this is my first YT vid and I could've done better in my later videos. See you guys later.

1). Go to support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-360/console/hard-drive for a simple hdd troubleshooting method. If it doesn't work, then perform these steps below.
2). Find a usb drive that has enough storage to download a small game of any kind
3). Make the usb become your 'memory unit'.
4). Download all your wanted profiles.
5). Re-download and test one of your games & check for any evidence of save files such as your current level, time played, etc. (doesn't include your dlc's).
6). Format your hdd IF YOUR GAME(S) have recovered save files.
7). Move your profile(s) & game(s) from your 'memory unit' to your formatted hdd.
8). Re-download the rest of your games and main dlc's to your hdd (preferably overnight)
9). Re-download all your small dlc's on your free time.
10). Enjoy.
but how do you make the usb your memory unity?
I've been trying this for 4 days straight - that's 96 hours no sleep, taking out hdd and putting it back. My arm is getting tired...

holy shit this needs more thumbs up. i didnt think that simple 'remove reboot plug back in' crap would do it lol. i probably erased a ton of game data for nothing but at least i can play original games on it now
Thank you so much for the help I had a 16 gigabytes drive and it worked perfectly and I have 14.00 gigabytes of space on it and just thank you so much like I wouldn't figure it out if I hadn't look on you tube or anything I was about to go to Microsoft and go to support help but I was like why don't I try CZcams and that worked perfectly thanks

Formatted my hard drive. Everything's good at the moment. I've downloaded ~45 games & dlc's. I've also used 9 discs and they ALL worked.
But.....
I've got an irrelevant problem w/ my network connection (My Xbox 360 refuses to automatically assign my network info, leading to an offline status for over a week). P.S: You can safely download games after formatting the hdd, so don't waste your time. All you will need to download on your flash drive (which you've set up as your external memory unit) should be all your profiles.
What if the internal hard drive won't format?

Thx bro, I had the first scenario. My Main Hardrive was unformatted and I all I had to do clean and let it cool down.
When i click memory unit usb drive basically, there is no option to set as device main storage...

I hope i get a response, so i plugged in my flash into my xbox and for some reasons i cant find the format option. i can only open and view whats inside the flash.That is, there isn't any storage manager menu, just file manager menu. Please help
So if you format it without a flashdrive all your data on the hard drove will be deleted

Theres no option to set as my main storage after hitting Y. I also cant run performance tests on my USB or hard drive. Never got an update message or anything like that either idk whats going on
hard to hear but good video... I did everything up to format the harddrive but Im playing 1 game now on my online account with just a 4gb usb stick... what happens when I wipe the harddrive now? will I still get back everything I bought and I would just have to download them again? thanks :)
You can re-download your games and apps on your download history (Overnight would be a great idea) after downloading your profile.
After all, it's easier than having to go to a game shop, waste up to $700 worth of games and having to unlock the achievements, reach your current level, etc.

I had this problem so I deleted everything off of an old USB drive to see if that would work, and now it says I have to have at least 738 mb of space to be able to customize it in storage
I did this and it didn't work so I decided to format it, losing years of data. I then played for a few hours and came back tomorrow. Needed to be reformatted again

My flash drive actually did this and I was so pissed and thought I lost where I was in my game but what I did was turn off my Xbox and take out my flash drive and insert it back and turn the game back on and everything was there

Before I watched this video I took the hard drive out while it was on… then I went to look and the “unformatted” hard drive is gone.. I don’t know what to do because now it only has memory unit

My games won't exactly load they go to the home screen and it says the disc is unreadable
Check if the disc is scratched first, then don't forget to try re-downloading games you couldn't play. If that doesn't work, try to look up the error code that you are seeing at the moment online.

I followed your advice, but I don't have my save files for the games that I wanted to play. How do I get my save files back? When this crap happened to my hard drive, it was working fine a day before. All of a sudden, everything was gone. Then I followed the advice of your video. I have my xbox live profile. If your saves are deleted you cant get it back because you didnt have a flash drive

Put in a audio CD when you turn on XBox not a Game, thats worked for me,it read my profile and memory

I know I'm a year later but still just go to format where it said unformatted hard drive and delete everything off your xbox
if you remember your ACC u can just redownload it and you can have everything back that you bought in your ACC but you're gonna have to download them tho

Thanks for the feedback. I think that may be an even easier way to do this, because your Microsoft account will still be online even after formatting your hdd; therefore, I think it may be possible that you could still redownload your profile without backing anything up.
PS: If you have tried formatting your hdd without back up your profile and it has worked for you before, please let us know. We'll be more than happy to pin your comment.
In the video, I stated that you had to back up your profile on another memory drive just in case everyone says that it doesn't work for them. If you are correct, there won't be any need for a flash drive. If it has worked for you, that's what will determine what everyone will do to deal with this problem.

Sorry, but if you haven't backed up the hdd, you'll have to do the work by re-downloading the games and apps you have. But trust me... It's better than having to start over again and is worth it once you have all your downloaded games.
