- Our 4GB internal memory became corrupt and unusable. We couldn't download game updates, etc. We needed to bypass the HD make the default download location the external flash drive we use. This is what I discovered that fixed the problem.
- Hry
Here's a random update just over a year after I made this video... My son decided he wanted to get Destiny for our Xbox 360. We didn't realize at the time that Destiny wasn't compatible with the 4gb console. This was basically just the final motivation to finally buy an internal hard drive. We got the 120gb Xbox hard drive and it not only allowed him to play Destiny but it really improved the performance of the console. Now I only wish we would have done it earlier.
If I do this will it delete all my games that I bought on Xbox 360 market place
Landon Ceno-Montira Anything you've purchased and downloaded can be re-downloaded. I doubt if any games are stored on the 4gb memory though.
Thanks you help me out
It wored
Worked
I dont understand the science or how you came accross this, but it worked for me and I'm super pumped about it. Thanks!
Can you explain how you did it? Is there a certain way?
98matching I did just what he did in the video, except my profiles were already deleted so I didnt have to do that step
All xbox360s lets you use any usb stick 2.0 for games to install even from the disc too
Greg, great video! I do have a note on one thing I ran into.
This first didn't work for me. When my Xbox would restart to perform the system update, it would not recognize my USB (that I had already configured as storage) and would give me an error. I changed flash drives (from Standard Disk Drives to Kingston), and your instructions worked perfectly! For those out there who may still be struggling with a corrupt internal memory and this video didn't work, check your flash drive. Configure it as storage, then reboot your Xbox. If you check in your storage settings again and the flash drive isn't automatically recognized as a memory unit, try a different brand of flash drive. Kingston worked for me.
Again, thanks for the video!
Thanks for the help, was exactly what I need it. Worked like a charm.
Two steps to add.First of all I just want to say thanks for your solution and yes I still have a Xbox 360 in 2017. First you have to have a USB drive that’s compatible with the Xbox 360 standards. Second you have to tell the Xbox to make this device a system drive or a system device, When you’re in storage. I think that’s the correct wording I can’t remember now since when I try to do it again the option didnt come up good luck everyone.
I am so excited to try this! I just spent 4 hours troubleshooting. Glad I stepped back and wrapped my head around the corrupted memory idea and searched for it. Thank you in advance!
I sure hope it worked for you.
Wow thanks so much I had a huge panic attack when this happens to my Xbox. I lost most of my progress but at least my console still works
Thanks for the info Greg. I just bought this Xbox on eBay and found out the flash memory was corrupt. I tried several things to try and get the updates to work but no luck. I was about to give up when I followed your instructions. I did everything you said. The only thing I figured out differently was after I cleared the cache. You can actually go back into options (y) button and it give you the option to make the usb drive as the system drive. After it formatted the usb and made it the system drive updated with no problem. THANKS AGAIN YOU SAVED ME FROM KICKING MYSELF FOR BUYING THIS XBOX. LOL
How did you make the USB the system drive? I don’t see that option when I go into the drive settings
I don’t see that option. Thanks for the letting us know you have a secret.
Well say something.
@@therealvader1379Nvm found it. You have to delete everything on the memory unit and format it. Then the option will appear.
@@TerminaaRead above.
Still works in 2019 thanks!
Thank you so much I wouldn’t have been able to fix my Xbox without this video
Joey Malik so glad it helped!
Dang, I got the concept of what happened on your Xbox but after following the steps it just wouldn't pick up the usb stick as the "main drive." The internal memory also will flip and flop between unformatted and formatted, which may also stop it from switching. I think it's stupid XBOX just doesn't allow you to set the USB or an External HDD as your main drive. Anywho, I'll try buying one of Xbox's externals and hope that fixes things permanently. Thanks for the video, it was worth a shot and I see it does help some people's problems. Have a great day, man!
Skotthas Could you please explain how to set a flash drive as the main drive?
Skotthas Unfortunately this is not possible on the 4GB model.
Microsoft has designed it in such a way that even if the 4GB chip dies it will remain allocated as the primary drive.
It is just ridiculous...
REPLY
My xbox has a 320GB HDD in there and a USB 16GB thumbdrive but everytime I try to connect to the internet and try to download the update or try to load the update from the USB drive it tries to install it on the corrupt 4GB internal memory and it fails...
Seems there is no way to bypass the designation of the 4GB internal flash drive as the primary drive. Frustrating and so unnecessary.
The only way to solve it I have heard is to remove the corrupt 4GB drive from the motherboard and to solder on a new one.
Ridiculous but it seems to be the only solution.
Skotthas Well glad I could be of help with suggesting a solution :)
If you are crafty with soldering it should not be too big a problem.
Myself on the other hand I have no soldering skills or tools so I just use this xbox 360 for offline gaming and watching DVD's... old school entertainment!
Last xbox product I will ever buy, that's for sure.
I hope you are able to fix your girlfriends xbox and that she will be ever grateful. Good luck!
Hey just wanted to say thank you SO MUCH you saved my xbox! I was getting ready to mail it to Microsoft for repairs and came across this video, followed step by step and it worked :D Thanks again!
That's awesome to hear! It worked for us but I wasn't sure it would do squat for anyone else. Nice to know it helped at least one other ;)
Greg, does this work with profiles that have never been online? I am currently having the same issue, but have never had xbox live. My son got a live card for his birthday but I currently have the corrupt internal memory. I need to bypass it as i do have a 120gb hard drive in it.
Hi Steve. I think this may simply be a terminology issue. I think all profiles are Xbox Live profiles, even of you don't have Gold. I'm assuming your son just got a gift card for Gold. I believe all profiles, even without Gold, are online profiles. So even if you haven't had Gold before, it should work because your profiles were online with Xbox Live. I hope I'm not talking out my rear here Lol!
Thanks man you saved my life and my games, im going to subscribe.
Love u man I got a rgh Xbox and if the hdd isn't reading plug a USB in then click configure and it will work
Worked! Thanks so much for posting this.
That was awesome thank you very much!! Unfortunately all my games were saved to the cloud and that won't load with internal hard drive so all that got lost but everything else plays so no worries I'll just start over thanks again!!!!!
thank you so much, been looking for hours for a solution, and it works
how did you get it to work? how did you get the console to start using the alternative drive? i cannot figure this step out.
Greg, I understand the concept of what you are doing here to change the system drive so that the downloads now go to an alternate "system" drive which is your USB thumb drive. What's not clear to me here is what step of your process actually makes the USB drive become the "system" drive such that the updates are then able to process and be applied? I have the same issue and have tried these instructions repeatedly, but it never seems to work. My guess is that every time I try to do a download the system drive is still the internal 4GB memory and it fails again. It does seem to download fine over internet and then when it does the progress bar to apply/update it gets mostly done and then stops/fails.
Seems strange i can't even seem to find anything on Google about changing a "system" drive.
This is the problem I am having. how do you get it to start using the alternate memory unit / drive?
Hi James, curious if you ever got further on this effort....I haven't.
Nope, seemed to have hit a dead end. Nothing in this video seemed to work.... however there is a fix, but it involves soldering a new chip onto the motherboard.
You both are spot on in your analysis of the issue at hand.
How there is no option to designate another harddrive as the primary one is beyond me... what an easy solution would that have been.
Soldering a new chip is such an extreme remedy... Micro$ucks will never get a cent out of me again.
Was there something you did to make your 4gb hard drive unformatted? I'm having the same problem, but this doesn't solve the issue. It still tries to download everything to my 4gb drive, even with a hard drive hooked up.
It means its dead
Same goes for hard drives they all die someday
thank u so much, i can now play xbox again
I tried everything you did.. But once my x box restarted I checked the memory and the profiles where back.. Everything was how it was before I tried anything.. All the items saved say corrupt items
CAUTION to all gamers:
Do not put your game profile in the internal Hard drive of Xbox 360. The internal Hard drive is NOT stable and will get Unformatted status and if this happen, all your profiles and Game save inside the internal Hard drive will be lost. I lost several of my profiles and game saves. Hope this don't happen to other gamer.
how do you get the console to utilize the alternate memory? mine is still using the internal 4GB to download / install the crap. HELP PLEASE
I cannot seem to get my 4GB to get to the "unformatted" state.
So far its working as I said I had been using my Xbox for awhile so it was probably to hot but I let it cool down with the help of a fan blowing cold air into the heatsink side before I turned my Xbox on I popped the hard drive out but just unhooked it when it told me I needed the update I popped my hard drive back in I didn't turn it off or press any buttons it did do the Xbox loading up screen and then said it needed the update in which it did download fully I did didn't turn my Xbox off before inserting the hard drive for fear of getting the red light and error code, before without the hard drive it wouldn't connect to the internet at all but after installing the update and it restarting before I put my profile back on it connected to the internet, also after putting my profile back onto the hard drive everything showed up, before at the home screen parts of the advertisements were missing along with the avatars such as my friends avatars they wouldn't show up immediately like they should have but after doing the update it fixed both problems, now let's just hope it stays that way for all I know I could have just fixed my Xbox completely time will only tell.
Thank you man. I sold my 20gb hd so can buy 250gb and i have to use my moms usb in meantime and this happend.
Will this get the saves on the hard drive back cause i had a bunch of completed game saves on it
Can you please make a video showing step by step. Like did you originally delete your profiles from your hard drive or flash drive? And did you clear cache from your hard drive or flash drive? Things like that step by step from the beginning. I would really appreciate it.
The answer to all your questions is basically YES. As long as they are XBox Live profiles, which you can just redownload to your XBox, just delete all the profiles from anywhere they are saved on your system - hard drive and/or flash drive. Then do the same for the cache. Delete all the system cache from everywhere. Then to the LB RB X, LB RB X, thing so you can revert back to the previous update. Then when you restart your XBox it should prompt you to download the latest update which in theory will download to the flash drive and you are all good. If that all works out it is then important to never mess with that 4 gb of internal memory again. Don't try to format it, save to it, or mess with it in anyway or you just start your problem all over again. I hope something in this long explanation helps you.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!!!!
I got scared when the LB RB thing actually worked! xD I actually did
Thanks so much for the help 😊
it didnt work for me, if I put a HDD it will become the primary storage of the system so I can install the updates?
Oh my gosh u just solved my only xbox problem
Thanks. It finally started downloading.
Nice!
I try this but my internal drive is corrupted but does not say unformatted and when I try to format it nothing happens to it. Any ideas
How do you get it to unformatted? I tried the button code and the 4gb memory comes back. Ahhhh so frustrating! Can it be removed inside completely?
Do you know if this works for a hard drive that modders have attacked? I don't have the money to get a new Xbox 360 slim elite sadly modders have attacked my system its out of warranty and im trying to learn how to fix my hard drive and save my Xbox, was your hard drive that way when u got it or did it suddenly start doing it after you started playing on it after awhile? If it's the later of the two it sounds like a modder attacked your hard drive I need to know if this works and fixes the problem before I try doing it this to my Xbox.
Jonathan Rawls yes, this happened to ours several months after we got it. Maybe more like a year.
Yeah my Xbox just suddenly started doing it after 4 years of use after crossing paths with someone that had a modified Xbox in a game I played, I've had modders threaten to kill my Xbox before so I don't doubt that's what happened with yours and mine difference between mine and yours is I probably shut mine down while he was in my system and wasn't able to completely corrupt it entirely but he did do enough damage to the hard drive itself, he did this without warning but by shutting off my Xbox I probably saved my Xbox from further damage.
It also probably didn't help me any that about a year ago I sat an unlite candle on my Xbox that melted into the console itself, now xboxs are suppose to turn themselves off automatically when they get to hot which mine didn't which means my console was defected at the factory but my console is out of warranty being that its 4 years old, I did manage to get the candle wax out of the Xbox and off the motherboard by reheating the candle wax with a hair dryer. Now I just gotta figure out how to reuse thermal paste I was wondering do you know weather its water based or oil based or is it both, I might can bring life back into the thermal paste itself.
Sir i am having an xbox 360 4gb and i cant downlode any games from xbox live as the memory is small. Can i downlode games without hard drive and by using flash drive of 64gb
Please help I have an error for this game it says some xbox360 features are missing or corrupted a system update is required to replace them you console will know restart
still doesnt,work what,can i do?
FYI, The 4GB internal memory is a flash drive. The hard drive is a removable HDD that goes in the removable door on the right side.
Yeah.
After I deleted profile only I couldn’t get them back. How do you get them back ?
Mine doesn't even show the internal memory "un formatted" it just says the 2 USBs I have in
i just reformatted my hard drive and it worked
Same thing happened to my USB device. Will this help?
Thanks!! kick ass instructions!!!!
My Xbox has the memory unit saying it has stuff in it and it's empty. I followed the exact steps and I still doesn't work,
Justin Estes bro same me to
That just happened to mine to haven't been able to fix it I was thinking of just taking it out of the system
UnknownXero how you take it out the system? Please tell me
This worked for me. Thank you!
Great to hear! You're welcome.
im having troubles with my 60 gb hard drive. i have turned the system on and off but the hard drive stil says that i have no profiles on it, it still says that i still have 11 gb left to use but it wont let me access any of my stuff. dose anyone have suggestions?
I did this and got an e69 code after doing so it didn't ask me to do the update it just restarted and went straight to that code, also my Xbox is in e still I brought up the same screen, I will however wait a little while before I try to do the update due to overheating problem due to needing new thermal paste quite possibly needing new power brick, and if this doesn't work for my hard drive I'll need a new hard drive still in slowly learning how to fix my own Xbox without having to buy a new one, I'll let you know if this fixes the problem but I gotta let my Xbox cool down some first.
I took my 250 gb hard drive out and put it in another Xbox it didn't work so I put it back in my Xbox and now it says that I have to reformat it ! Please help me ??
my problem is i can't mod my any more because it's saying that i already formatted it but i did'nt
Holy shit man I love you it worked
***** Ha! So glad it has helped a few.
Greg Brady One of my games doesn't want to on my xbox 360 it's not the disc it's the hard drive and if you have done this or not when you transfer the games on a new hard drive will it read and work? please i need help.
sooooooo helpful. watched to many vids with no help from any
Tried this and it doesn’t work for me I’m using a authentic Xbox 360 s hard drive 250 gb
my bo2 maps say content not available even if i try to liesence transfer
Mine does the same but the storage doesnt let me get pass the load screen
when I play this game it says download the game again I can't because I have the disk and not the download
I almost unlocked everything in my Marvel Legos game. After weeks and hours of playing and then all of a sudden my game froze on me the second I got another gold brick. I restarted my game and my saved slot said corrupted. I couldn't access my memory. I believe this step could work. But I'd Like to know how great is the chance for this to work? Lol I miss my game because of this
I've tried both methods
Taking hard drive out for a clean
And deleted last update
And still get the same problem
Me too
just had same problem today. I put in a 8gb flash drive and made it a system drive then download the update.
Does this work for a internal hard drive
Omgshh thanks so much now i can play gta
how do you have a 4g xbox and halo 3? halo 3 needs 5.68 gb to run
I guess because we had the game on a 32gb flash drive.
Thanks for the video. I couldn't get past the corrupted 4GB internal flash memory even after trying memory stick and purchasing a 60Gb hard drive expansion, so it didn't work for me, but it may help others. I found written instructions on this page that also may help others:
beta.support.xbox.com/help/xbox-360/console/system-update-help
I need help reply fast I just turned on my Xbox and my USB stick says unformatted what do I do I have all my games there all my game saves and everything please help I don't want to delete everything
You have to make sure your USB is compatible with Xbox 360. Second you have to tell her to make this device a system dry good luck
you're the best dude!!!
how you do that bro
Do what
Thanks u made my xbox weird now I cant play so I have to buy a new one thanks alot
You are welcome. I actually get kickbacks from Microsoft for making people's Xbox go weird and therefore having to buy a new one. So really I should be thanking you!
@@GregBrady yo.. i didnt mean this man i am sorry for my foolish actions 5 years ago i now realise this was all my fault and you were only trying to help i wish you the best.
You're on the right track, but unfortunately even after following through with your steps, This did not work. After clearing the cache, deleting the profiles, and removing the previous update using LBRBXLBRBX(as shown in your video), my xbox restarted and I was prompted to update again, but I got the same error code. What I think is happening is the xbox is STILL trying to download the update onto the corrupted internal memory. My theory is that xbox would prefer to keep the update on the internal memory to keep things simpler, and maybe to prevent tampering. I could be wrong and if you have any more information, PLEASE REPLY.
One last thing: after I tried to format the internal memory(or the device that says: "unformatted") I get sent back to the storage menu, and the device still said: "unformatted"! I can continue to select the format option and format the device as many times as I want but it still says "unformatted" afterwards.
Guess it works for some and not for others. Just one of those random things I found. I hope you get your issue resolved.
Greg Brady I talked to xbox support about my issue, and I have some interesting information from them other people might want to know. The guy I talked to over the phone told me that after you download the update from xbox live, before it gets installed, A Diagnostic is run to make sure all your hardware is working properly and or has not been tampered with. If something is wrong, like in my case where the internal memory got corrupted, then xbox will not proceed with the update and will give you an error code.
Greg Brady the only way to resolve this SPECIFIC issue is to send it in the microsoft for $79 so they can replace the internal memory.
Peter Schorn Dang, that kinda blows. I feel lucky then. I mean I guess $79 isn't the end of the world if it fixes the issue. I wish the wacky work around would have worked for yours too.
I wish your solution worked too, but thanks for making the video anyways.
Yooooa thank yooooou
does anyone know why my Xbox 360 slim isn't reading my internal hardrive?
I will try ok if this doesn't work make anothere video plz my gta has been currupted for a half a year
Thanks man
My hard drive is not showing up what do I do.
I'm scared if the update is downloading did it mean it worked?? Plz reply I have anxiety over this my heart I pounding like crazy plz reply plz oh plz oh plz don't tell me my xbox broke or else my parents won't buy me a new one!!!!!!! Again if it IS downloading does it mean that it worked?!?!?!?!?!??!?
my Xbox keeps acting slow or won't start at all when I put in my old 120 gb. hard drive
someone please help
Will it still work
How did you get the usb to be your main storage..
bigmac4567 The short answer to that is when you go through the steps and bypass the internal memory, your system then defaults to the flash drive as your main storage.
What are the steps I am confused, where is the option
FadeAbstracts the best I can tell you is to watch the video and it walks you through it. Sorry.
My xbox internal hard drive just say 37 mb and wont update going to try this now
Just be aware that this did red ring my Xbox. :/
I need help corrupting my xbox so I can do the bypass and help everyone get back backwards compatibility without needing an internal hdd.
It's ok
Yeah okay. But when i delete system cache wont all my game data be deleted from it
Negative. System cache is just little junk files which are not needed to actually run anything. Just by deleting cache you are not losing any game data.
Thank you soo much dude
thanks a lot. you saved me from buying a new xbox.
You're welcome. I was so relieved too that I didn't have to go buy a whole new system just for a dumb problem like this.
If this happens micro soft should get you a new one because it's a glitch in the system
Jake Galbraith Sounds like a good plan but they would only do that if the unit is still under warranty. And even if it's still in warranty they will first want you to send them your console so they can see if they can repair it first. Sucks to have to go through all the trouble for a problem on their end.
Jake Galbraith Hard drives fail all the time after lots of use. You can't blame microsoft for that, they didn't invent the hard drive either.
Peter Schorn Mine went corrupt just after the warranty was out. If it was in warranty they would have fixed it but I'm more content with the work around I found. It would be a pain to ship it off to Microsoft. Ours is still trucking along with everything now on the flash drive.
does this work with 250gb hard drive please tell m me
Yes
I'm trusting you
CAUTION before you use this method. If you remove the last update and the system still can not update itself, you will have rendered the system useless. When you revert back, now the system can not play any games without an update that you removed. I was able to play any game previously and now the system is a door stop.
THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad it helped!
Does this really really work?!? I have a 16GB USB and it says unformatted and I got so sad at the beginning I had no idea what it meant until I clicked it and it said "are you sure? This will delete all the systems data" and I got scared it happened yesterday but it was fine in the morning later I got off EVEN more later I got on saw that there were new achievements in minecraft so I played it I had to update it so I did and I went on minecraft played for about 30 mins then got off later I got on and it said unformatted I got so sad so I didn't play for the rest of the day and it's the next day my brother had the same problem but 3 years ago and he said he couldn't find anything to fix it so he had to get it all back again. So I went on my ipad to see if anyone eels has this problem. And it turns out they did then I wanted to figure out how to fix it then I found this video even though I had to scroll down all the way to find it I was like this one is the good one. Right now I'm just nervous to try this method, and if it works then I will scream!
u need a hard drive not USB
Cant fine a game I downloaded in my games.
it's working I think
Mine keeps playing dvd
I had this happen to me it erased everything no matter how hard I tried to fix it. I just had to bite the bullet an go an buy a Xbox hdd from best buy. I'm $150 in the hole but at least it works now.
We were in a similar situation. I was about to go buy a hard drive and give that a try and then we got lucky with this work around. That was about 9 months ago and it's still going strong. Hopefully it keeps working until we wear it out otherwise.
My doesn't have any storage
format the unformatted drive I have the some problem I formatted the drive and it's been fine ever since.
Ryan Mackie I wish that would have worked in my case; would have made things a lot easier. We must have had different problems I guess.
Yeah have you tried formatting the drive
Ryan Mackie Yep, didn't do anything because the drive is corrupt.
Take the slim apart and then take the 4gb HDD out and then put it in your pc. And let the pc do the formatting. Once its finished put it back in your xbox and let the xbox then let the xbox do the formatting. That should fix the problem.
Ryan Mackie Luckily I no longer have a problem because I don't use the 4gb memory anymore. Plus, the small memory board would not go in my PC in any way. But again, my issue is resolved by bypassing the corrupt 4gb memory. Thanks though.
Thx man destiny was being annoying
how do we get back our profiles???
how to get on youtube xbox 360
This is happening to my xbox 4gb, when I delete the profile, it come right back into the memory, I can get it to delete for so reason it wll not stay deleted, how did you bypass the memory?
Carefull in doing this! I deleted my profiles and this fix didn't work. Deleted all of the profiles now cannot retireve them. Rendered my xbox useless.....
Sorry to hear that. You must have a bigger problem though. You can upload your profile to any Xbox even if it's not yours. And your Xbox wouldn't be useless unless you do have bigger problems and it just doesn't work. Good luck though.
Will it still work
Jake Galbraith there is nothing in this process that would cause any harm or damage to your Xbox. It's simply just flushing out the old cache and memory so you can bypass the internal hard drive which has gone bad and save all your data to an external flash drive. If your Xbox has bigger problems then this process may not work for you. But nothing in this video will actually cause your Xbox not to work. Good luck.
Greg Brady Zac Rinderknecht zac, I believe you can only re-download online profiles. If you deleted a local profile not connected to xbox live, then you cannot get that profile back. :(
Peter Schorn Good point. I'll put a note on the video to point that out.
*Dead internal memory. Not corrupt.
