- Two important things to note about the July 29, 1975 coup, that brought about the rise and fall of Yakubu Gowon are:
One, it was bloodless.
Two, it was carried out by Gowon’s kinsman, his right-hand man, Colonel Joseph Nanven Garba. He was the Commander of the Brigade of Guards. He announced the coup on Radio Nigeria and it was rumoured he was also from the same town as Gowon. #HistoryVille #YakubuGowon

His overthrow was a bloodless coup because he was a good man. He just needed to be more strict. He was not corrupt though his administration was. He was the youngest ruler we had. May you continue to be blessed!
Thats how coup should be blood not full of anger hate and spite
Lol, the same man that set the whole north against the igbos? 😊
@@therealistObaStop lying! Gowon didn’t do that! Keep the anger down and think of the Igbo led coup of January 1966 that annihilated Balewa, the golden voice of Africa! A humble and beloved man all over Africa and the world. (Check him out online). The bloody coup led by ambition and jealousy made Igbos overthrow the government only targeting Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, (Hausa), Akintola(Yoruba). Sir Ahmadu Bello,(Hausa), who was shot with his wives, Okotie-Eboh,(Warri), all non Igbos. The top military officers who again were killed with their wives, some in front of their kids, mostly Yorubas, (were all non Igbos.) The Igbo leaders, Azikwe, Okpara, Ironsi were all conveniently spared. Human nature does non take evil done against their people very well. I’m sure you remember Ironsi’s assassination because he was one of yours. What do you think triggered second coup and the killings? I don’t condone any of it, but it’ll help if you get to the bottom of the problem.
@@therealistOba You’re free to say what you’re not informed about.
Our children need to start learning African history. Enough of learning Mungo Park discovering Nigeria, lords and Queens of Europe
Your advice is too late. African history was offered in many secondary schools as far back as the mid 1960s. On another note African history includes Mungo Park but not that he discovered Nigeria.
Gowon handled his humiliation gracefully in the public eye.
Soo sad, Gowon was surrounding by Corroupted Governors, Generals, Commisonners and chief public administrators, local council cities. All of them ambitios to become millionares.
Love love love how this reader reads; so original and confident!
Nice documentary however Yakubu Gowon had his basic military training at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. That was where he got the nickname “Jack”. Ojukwu always called him jack Gowon because he too was an alumni of RMA Sandhurst.
And the Queen likes him
Imagine what was going through Gowon’s mind when the man came over to whisper a coup had happened in Nigeria; one of those rare moments in history caught on camera where you’re watching the man for his reaction. We would also see something similar when George Bush was informed at the kids’ school that planes had flown into the World Trade Center. That clip is all about his reaction and trying to maintain some semblance of normalcy in a moment when the country would never be the same again.
It serves him right my dear.
Gowon was the one of the most military president in that era. He's the reason power resides in the north till today. He came from where I could call a minority state, and yet, sold his freedom and that of that region to the hands of tyrants. He can't even live in his home town, so it's a big disgrace. He had the opportunity to fix Nigeria and ensure there is a equal right of any Nigerian to the highest position in office but he failed woefully.

The best military Head of state in Nigeria history.Very dignified and smart
Yet his primitive system of government which Nigeria is still using till today is what keeps you out of job no development no electricity tribe or regions will not developed or move forward than others state governor can not create jobs from the resources in his state and more
That should be Muritala Muhammad
Point of correction, the planner and runner of the coup was Shehu Yar'dua not Joe Garba. It look a very long time for Yar'dua to convince Garba who gave the bloodless position. Joe Garba was Langtang and Gowon was Ngas both from plateau state but not kinsmen. Gowon was a victim of the 'Arewa' and 'namune' northern unity, but the muslims played him in many ways including handing over missionary schools to states (which got inslamized in the north) and northern elders (muslim emirs) held a meeting with Gowon and advised him to postpone handing over to civilians, which was later used a reason for the coup. There is more context but I'll leave these points for now.
Spot on. He was a pawn in the hands of northern leaders. He was born and raised amongst them to know the consequences of working against them.
Joe Garba and Theophelus Danjuma were all Christians.
Gowon trained at RMA Sandhurst before he was commissioned.
He trained at the prestigious Military Academy Sandhurst in England...you forget to Mention that.
He no go better for all the Fulani people in Nigeria mostly Buhari oloriburuku
Gowon was a good man, no greed, and very articulate man.
I Love the voice of this narrator ❤️
Superb. Love this piece. Mwah
Love these Documentaries
I like Gowon. From this documentary and other reports about him, I do not see in Gowon a man hungry for power. I read that he did not participate in the coup that brought him to power. And when his time was up, he never fought to retain power. He even shrugged off the coup reports like, "If it happens, it happens." And he radioed support for Murtala through the Nigerian air space. Secondly, we did not hear reports of cruelty from him or personal corruption during his regime (outside of Biafra which was a war situation). Thirdly, his magnanimous reintegration of Biafrans after defeating them in battle and letting their military leaders go was very merciful by a military leader. Overall, he comes across as a peaceful Nigerian dictator who minimized confrontation and bloodshed.
But he is the reason the war happened...he didn't keep to the agreements made at the meeting in Ghana with officers in charge of the regions especially protecting the eastern region.
@@simonchord1 I am looking forward to the day that Nigeria will return to its former state before 1967. That's when we will really start getting it right again.

Now I'm understanding God's words more. So Gowon betrayed Ojukwu in aburi and so his own right hand man betrayed him. Oh God just have mercy on me

Nigerian people can not forget the legend,as general yakubu Gowon
Go on with one Nigeria.
Yakubu Gowon is probably the only real Christian head of State Nigeria has had. Unfortunately he had no experience in ruling, and was Unfortunately surrounded by ignorant leaders like himself plus unscrupulous corrupt governors, commissioners (and so on), of the states he created. Since Gowon, none of his successors have applied any conscience to their duty and country. It's been roguery galore, I suppose!
How' is it always rise and fall?
Promoted by the Nigeria neocolonialist, The Fulani and after he had help them wiped out Christian majority the Easterners, they eventually overthrow him and put their man.
Where is Joe Garba now? Where is Muritala Mohamend now? Nevertheless Gen. Yakubu Gowon is still with us etc

This man should have allowed Aburi accord to stay by now we would be better than where we are today
A shattered dream
Not likely. Regionalism would have superseded nationalism. The present calls for "biafra"and "yoruba" nations smacks of regionalism.
Plus Gowon gave too many concessions to Ojukwu in the Aburi accord which however is not legally binding.
He did not trust Ojukwu either. No one from either side trusted each other. Gowon just came ahead.
Garba was not initially involved, he was warned not to resist otherwise it would be bloody
People will always have varying tastes though.
I see nothing wrong with the narrator's voice.

Gowon saw an opening he couldn't resist to become a head of state. He couldn't resist it even if it meant the killing of his mentor, benefactor, and boss to achieve his ambition. History will always view him as a cowardly despot who mercilessly oversaw the killings of millions of the Igbos through a genocidal war and the subsequent economic blockade implemented against the Eastern region of Nigeria. The resultant effect was consequential mass starvation and unprecedented breakout of diseases. He is still ranked as one of the most brutal leaders in the world earning comparison with the worst of them all.
He surrounded himself by bloodthirsty demons among humans, while others he did not sorround himself with, barged and manoeuvred themselves into his administrative camp. He then believed that jaw-jawing will make them change, but no. They besmeared him with whatever negative trait he had as a leader. His “No victor no vanquished “ mantra was from the heart, but not acceptable to the cabal that was busy using him as a front for their atrocities. I know and pray that God will forgive him.
Yakubu Gowon is culpable in Murtala's coup...😮
He didn't fall. No one is meant to rule forever
