This is an awesome little grill. For 1-3 people it works really well and can work for more people depending on what you are cooking. I have had one of these for many years, I don't even know when I got it, but it seems like I've had it forever. Nothing works better for getting a great sear on a steak... I hope you enjoy yours as much as I have mine...

A little history on the grill. The original patent on this grill was issued to Atlanta Stove Works as part of Birmingham Stove and Range in 1941. When BSR closed in 1991 they transferred the patent to Lodge for debt settlement owed to Lodge. Do you know what the long ridges on top of the grill are for? If not I will post a pic on your Face Book page, and no you can't have it but I will keep a look out for one. Well done video.... Dim ribs looked goooood.

  • @1DrBar

One of the reasons I bought this a few hours ago, was that it is manufactured in a new, fairly high tech facility in Tennessee, in the US of A. It feels good to spend money knowing that American families benefit.
just by looking at your video, it seems that Lodge has slightly increased the quality of the finish, compared to ten to twenty years ago. Is that the case in your experience? Would it be improved by further polishing the top of the grill, and re-seasoning?
The only improvement I can think of would be some sort of middle partition, for when one has just one steak or only two or three burgers. I may chip a fire brick to size.

Seasoning I can find but cleaning? Especially this Sportsman. I see extreme heat on the inside. I painted the hot cooking surface while I wasn't cooking on it but, after the cook...Lots of ash - clean it out - season - reheat. But that burns off the seasoning again.

Thanks for the video. A few years ago I had a round Lodge cast iron grill where the round grill top swung away from the fire. I had purchased it from the Lodge factory outlet store in South Pittsburg,TN along with the cast iron stand that the grill fit into. I never got the hang of grilling with that thing so I gave it away to my father and he sold/gave it away short while later. I don't think Lodge makes those grills anymore but if a person was to keep an eye peeled they could probably find one on Ebay or Craigslist eventually. I got some grilling tips from my mother and a Weber 14in grill that I like very well and through trial and error learned how to better use a grill. Watching your video I can see where the Sportsmans grill would be good for high heat searing. However I like the Weber grills the best. With a lid on the Weber grill I can move the coals over to one side(like I've seen you do in your videos before) and do some indirect grilling as well as a high heat sear. Back when Birmingham Stove and Range owned the patents for the Sportsmans grill they also made cast iron pans that fit nicely on top of the grill and I guess people would use them for fish frys. Cajun cook Justin Wilson used to have one of these shallow fish fry pans hanging on the wall behind him in his tv studio when he would film his cooking shows for television back in the 1980's. I think they were called oval roasters.
